Lake Saltonstall is one of the recreational areas available year round with a permit through the…read moreRegional Water Authority. Permits are about $25 per year and include parking pass codes, maps, and a quarterly event update. Be sure to bring a camera--there is also a photo contest every year. Lake Saltonstall is quite beautiful. There are two parking lots. The one at 400 Hosley Ave is mainly situated for hikers. The one farther down the street is for people who want to fish in small boats. I entered the gated lot for hikers. There are a series of interconnected trails (white triangle for parking, white rectangle for general movement towards the lake, and then you have your choice of the dead ended red trail that is approximately 3 miles with scenic overlooks, or the green circle trail approximately 4 miles, that wraps itself around the opposite side of the lake. The green circle trail will loop around the lake and to the other side (according to the map). My hiking partner and I went down most of the green trail that surrounds the lake, but then the trail turned into a shaded bugfest (or bug feast, whichever side you're thinking of). We quickly turned around and headed back towards the area we had previously trod upon. The debris and heavy limbs post-Irene have definitely been cleared away, but the water is still somewhat high at points. Bring plenty of bug spray for the woodsy areas.

It is patrolled by their police officers so you need to have your pass with you. The property is gated with a combination lock which you receive the code to when you get your pass. It costs $25 for an individual yearly permit or $35 for a family permit. Your permit will also get you access to 8 other properties the RWA owns. Lake Saltonstall is stocked annually by the state with trout and the RWA also has been stocking walleye for a number of years in the lake, too. There are also crappie, carp, perch, bluegills, and largemouth bass to be caught. If you want to fish here, you will also need at CT Fishing License if you are 16 years old or older. There is no swimming allowed and no dogs are allowed. Boats are available to rent for fishing since you cannot bring your own boat. They are trying to keep out Zebra Mussels. There are miles of maintained hiking trails where you often see some great wildlife. You are allowed to mountain bike and snowshoe here, too.

I would come a few times a week and each and every single time I would come, middle schoolers and young kids would be all over the place, goofing off on equipment and slamming the weights on machines. They were loud, obnoxious, and disruptive to many guests, including myself. When they did workout on the machines, they never cleaned them off and would leave messes all over the place. When I asked staff if they could have a word with the middle schoolers, they dismissed me and made me feel like I was in the wrong for trying to keep environment of the place open. The middle schoolers would just lounge around on equipment and ignore people when they asked if they could use the machines that they were just treating as chairs, or they would be in the middle of a workout space filming TikToks. More than once, I also went out to my car after a workout to find the middle schoolers sitting on people's cars and vaping. The staff at the front desk is extremely hit or miss. Sometimes you luck out and get someone nice that says hello/goodbye when you're coming or going, but most times, either no one is there or no one even bothers to look up from their phone. Many other guests also treat the place like an absolute garbage dump as well. People will leave machines without wiping them down or they'll just leave weights in the middle of the room. I've witnessed people working out on treadmills without shoes or socks on and the smell coming from them was quite ripe. Others completely disregard the concept of common courtesy and will blast music from their phones without headphones, despite numerous signs around the building saying that headphones are required. Others will talk loudly on the phone, disrupting workouts, too. I let my membership for this place expire and I do not plan on coming back any time soon, at least not until management does something about the middle schoolers goofing off, the patrons with no regard for their surroundings, or the terrible service at the front desk.
