Great place to go camping with friends and family. The place is beautiful and large enough for family reunions. Also challenging courses to help you overcome your fears.

My son has been attending for five years now and we are sad this was his last year. This is such a wonderful experience and an extra bonus of no technology...it's a great break for the kids. I cannot say enough positive things about the staff and counselors as they are simply amazing!! This is put on my the Florida Elks Lodge and they really accommodate families and ensuring your children have the best camp experience. I highly recommend sending your children here. It can be scary and difficult the first year without the ability to talk to your child but when you pick them up and hear the wonderful time they had, it's well worth it!

I read a negative review about someone's son getting hurt and not being notified. This has not been my experience. The one time when my son and his friend were throwing an object back and forth In the pool and my son got hit in the eye accidentally, they called me immediately and the P.A. was able to write him a prescription and she took care of everything. The camp is a little "quaint" but that adds to its charm. Last year my son did a week at another camp and begged me to only enroll him at Camp Horizon. It was way overcrowded at that other camp and the food terrible. I will be sending my daughter to Camp Horizon when she old enough. I appreciate they keep the price reasonable too.

It is off the beaten path in rural Leesburg. You enter through a quaint tree lined road and reach the campground that is situated on lake Harris. The dock reminds me of something out of the movies. It is wooden with an upper deck that looks out over the massive lake. The camp director was nice and let us take a walk around. The grounds were so peaceful and relaxing. The buildings are older but well maintained. They have air conditioned cabins, a gymnasium, snack bar, chapel and dining hall. The price includes 3 hot meals for the week. There are discounts if you attend two weeks and if you have a sibling that attends. I would have visited a long time ago however they have van trasportation from Pembroke Pines for only $10. each way!!! They don't have any televisons and they don't allow campers to use cell phones or electronics. My kids come home tired after having a blast all week . Last year my daughter had such a good time that she actually got camp sick. When she got home she was upset for days because she wanted to go back!!!

It is a rustic, outdoorsy camp, no cell phones allowed here! Camp Mah-Kah-Wee is a Girl Scout camp. They offer programs throughout they year for girls and have overnight camps during the summer. I have been to Mah-Kah-Wee many times over the years with my daughters, and I really appreciate that we have a facility like this so close to home. The camp surrounds a lake so there are many water activities like canoeing and kayaking available during the summer. There is also a swimming pool. They offer all of the standard camp activities like archery and crafts and they also have an obstacle course. My kids love this place. During the summer the week-long camps are themed so you can find something to match your child's interests. As for the facilities, the best place to stay is in the cabins. They have air conditioning! In Florida you NEED air conditioning in the summer. I've also chaperoned overnights in the tents, which aren't so bad, and a building they call the Eco Center, which is a bit more like a enclosed porch... no AC there. Overall, it's a great place. I highly recommend it. The prices for overnight camp are very good and the kids have a great time.

Our swimming session was canceled due to thunderstorms; however, the staff rescheduled our session later that day to make sure the kids got in their swimming. They even opened the other pool to allow them to go down the pool slide. Thank you so much. The pool staff was truly helpful and went out of their way to make sure the kids got in some extra time.

La-No-Che and scouting go hand in hand. If you're a scout and/or scout leader, especially in…read moreFlorida, you know about this place. Chances are you have probably also camped here at least once. It's an important part of being a scout and produces memories that you and your boys will have forever. There are different camping weekends throughout the year. They have a Tiger Growl weekend (just for Tiger Scouts), Webelos to scouts transition weekend, Cub Holiday weekends, Cub Halloween weekends and more. The camping activities are generally the same, but the themes change depending on the season and/or holiday. Their activities schedule for Saturday's are great because they are packed with things for the boys to do. By the end of the day the boys are bushed and and sleep like champs that night. They offer BB Gun shooting, archery, swimming, metal detecting, crafts, hiking and a play to name a few. They have a dining hall if you choose not to make your own meals and have a scout store/trading post where you will find anything and everything scouting related. Each campsite is quite large and features a covered and screened shelter to store your packs food/supplies. Those shelters also have bunks in their own rooms if needed. Each site also has its own flag pole if your pack or troop want to have your own flag ceremony each morning and evening. La-No-Che has their own flag ceremony that scouts must be a part of. Teaches the boys how to respect our flag and respect this country. Food in the dining hall is actually very good. My elite tongue was very happy with what I ate and it's only about $5 per meal. I'm a big guy and left each meal satisfied. During the Halloween season they have a haunted house and trail at night for the boys to enjoy. They also have trick-or-treating and a costume parade for all the boys to participate in. A Lot of fun and probably mine and my sons favorite time to camp here. This is a great team building/bonding camp for packs and troops and applies what it means to be a scout. If you have a son in scouting, this is a must. Your pack or troop should be coming here, especially if you reside in Florida. See you at La-No-Che!

Best area summer camp!…read more Camp Crystal, run by the Alachua County School Board, gives Alachua County kids the opportunity to attend a semi local sleep away camp. Area parents will love the shortness of the sessions (Sunday- Friday for one week campers, or Sunday- the following Friday for two week campers.), the short drive there (30-55 minutes depending where you live in Gainesville), and the lower cost (under $600 a child.) Kids will love the beautiful grounds, fun atmosphere, and the awesome classes (kayaking, paddle boarding, water sports, wake boarding, art, frisbee, newspaper, soccer, lacrosse, yoga, and so much more!) Because it is such a desirable summer camp, registration is not easy. Those who have attended a session can continue attending that session without much effort (with just a commitment and later payment) vs others (first time registrants or those looking to change sessions) who must be online at a precise moment and move quickly to try and snag the few available spots. Registering for the first time can be a stressful hassle, but it's absolutely worth it! Once your kids have attended this camp, you 100% understand why everyone is so desperate to have their kids attend. My daughter just completed her fifth year, while my son just completed his second year. Both absolutely loved it! My husband and I enjoyed the short week of no kids life, but loved being able to see and hear how they are doing through the Camp Minder email system, and the photos published nightly. Camp Crystal is truly the perfect taste of sleep away camp for us lucky enough to live in Alachua County!
