Lowes has a somewhat better selection for items like tile and lighting and it has the best selection in lawn and garden during the Spring planting season. Menards is more oriented toward the needs of construction professionals. Everything that a contractor might need in the way of paint, electrical, plumbing, roofing and lumber is typically in stock. I rehab older houses and these usually involve extensive rewiring and plumbing tasks, so Menards is where I go first for construction materials. Unless you are looking for cheap Chinese made lighting and plumbing fixtures, I don't recommend any of the big three home improvement chains. If you want quality, your best option is to search the internet or visit specialty vendors for items like high end lighting, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, and granite countertops. But that takes you out of the range of what DIYer can reasonably handle.
