Maine Repertory Theater - Chamber of Comedy at Maine Rep.

Maine Repertory Theater is really the comedy gem of Southern Maine. It's located behind an…read moreunassuming door in the Pepperell Mill in Biddeford, down the hall from Portland Pie. It's easy to find once you go into the mill building. Just follow the signs. When you hit the door surrounded by posters and photos you're there. The theater is beautiful. Walking in will take your breath away. It is both open and airy while still being intimate. Maine Rep, as the performers lovingly refer to it, is home to the Chamber of Comedy, the premier comedy improv troupe in New England, as well as original comedy productions year-round. The Chamber of Comedy shows run most Saturdays and are absolutely hilarious. The production quality is top-notch, complete with professional programs, a full stage, and lighting designed especially for comedy improv. The rotating ensemble is comprised of the top improvisers from many other improv troupes in and around New England. They are made up of some of the funniest people in the region with backgrounds in stand up comedy, Second City alumni, sketch writers, award-winning comedy playwrights, and actors. Watching them come up with hilarious scenes on the spot, all while dressed to the nines really sets them apart in the improv comedy scene. They are both deeply funny and professional. The combination of the high-class dress juxtaposed with the side-splitting comedy really makes you feel like you're seeing something off-Broadway in Manhattan rather than in Southern Maine. Though they are well known for the Chamber of Comedy, they also feature multiple comedy events such as their Smarty Pants Trivia nights, Script Teased sketch comedy show, Maine's Next Comic, and Maine Rep Mysteries produced by Sleuths Mystery Entertainment. They also host outside comedy troupes such as the all-women You Should Smile More and the award-winning Yes & Co. The theater features concessions, mostly snacks and popcorn, sodas, wine, and craft beer, all reasonably priced. The shows are usually priced at $20 or less with the exception being their fully catered Maine Rep Mysteries. The theater's entryway/"lobby" area is a special treat. The walls are covered with quotes that really express the mission of the theater. As one quote says, "love always wins, laughter a close second." Beneath the quotes are black and white photos of the cast doing what they love on stage. You can tell that, to them, it is more than a theater. It's a home for the performers. Of special note is Maine Repertory Theater's Legacy Project. They encourage their patrons to bring a donation of non-perishable food items. At the end of each month, they divide and deliver the donations to the Biddeford Food Pantry and The Saco Food Pantry. They also donate 2% of every ticket sold to Habitat for Humanity - York County, and another 2% to Volunteers of America - Northern New England, and their ongoing work with Cabin in the Woods. They do this as a means to give back to their community. I wish other businesses would do the same. I cannot recommend Maine Repertory Theater enough. The quality of the location, cast, show, production, concessions, everything really shows the dedication to create something special. The pricing shows that they are going out of their way to make comedy affordable. It really is the Broadway of comedy in the region. You owe it to yourself to check it out.

This is a welcome entertainment venue in downtown Biddeford. Great use of the mill space - the…read moretheater is new with plenty of space, high ceilings and good views of the stage from every seat. Seats about 65 peope. Improv shows are well done and extremely funny with a good cast of comedians. Definitely worth checking out on a weekend.

The two times that I have been here, I wanted to see if there were any improvements since the old Jokers is gone from here but the experience was very similar both times. The service is just ok where the staff looked like they were more interested in mingling and hanging out rather than being on top of the patrons that are looking to partake in a beer or cocktail. Now, I have to be honest, both of the events were ones that were charity and fundraising events in the room right next door and everyone had to head out to get their beverage so, I was not in the main room watching sports on one of the many televisions with sports riddled across all of the screens. There is a neat view of the gymnasium type of area right below and near the windows to partake in some live sports action with kids and adults alike. If they were to invest in marketing this place and really making sure that the staff was super friendly and wanted to make this the PLACE TO BE, then they could easily make this a prime place to go for sports bars in the area (we lack in a lot of effective ones in this genre). I will probably head back over here after some Home Depot shopping or something and then I will see how it is on a day where we are looking to do some sports and some fun.

This is ok for a fun night out they don't do it in the summer so it's nice when you're bored with…read morethe hum drum of winter. There were three comedians the first was not very funny, the second was good and the third was good. The venue is less than stellar, just not very nice. It has a lot of potential someone would want to put the money into it. The restaurant part smells like a brewery and the food is not great but it's something to do.

A GREAT Night Out For Many Reasons....Read on…read more.. It's a long one - please hang in there... If you have read any of our past reviews you will quickly conclude that we are not easy to please. However, we are always objective, logical and thorough. We work hard for our money and unfortunately, more often than not, become just fed up with what appears to be the rule - over-priced, over-hyped restaurants, clubs and hotels that simply fail to deliver as promised. When we leave these typical restaurant, hotel and entertainment experiences, we feel more like victims than satisfied customers. Headliners Comedy Club in Manchester, NH is a wonderful exception to rule. This place meets every requirement for a satisfying night out and then some: 1. It is very reasonably priced (unlike similar shows one could see in Boston - costing more for crowded, noisy, uncomfortable settings). 2. The acts are consistently entertaining and funny. (It is not uncommon for us to have tears streaming down our cheeks because we are laughing so hard.) 3. Free street parking is everywhere. (Again, unlike Boston for example, where parking is just one more opportunity to waste more money for a potentially "so-so" night out). 4. Customers are treated as Guests, not just customers. As a previous reviewer wrote, yes, the setting is in a Hotel and not in its own facility or building. This is, in our opinion, irrelevant to us and most who attend. We could not care less about who owns the building. The setting is exactly what is needed to present the show and meet the needs of the attendees. And buildings cost money. And guess who picks up the added costs? The Customer. I would rather pay a reasonable price for a ticket and go to a hotel (where, by the way, there is a comfortable lobby, fireplace, restaurant and a bar should we so desire, in a very pleasant setting) than pay more than double and sit as a captive, in a tight, noisy setting that the Comedy Club owns. Our priorities are clear. The Owners (and Staff) could not be nicer. They personally acknowledge our presence, engage us directly, are warm, friendly, professional and accommodating. We are made to feel that we belong - unlike most other entertainment and restaurant experiences anyone would typically have. We leave the Club laughing, talking about the acts and relaxed - as we have just experienced a wonderful escape from our 12 to 18 hour work days. Check it out and form your own opinion.

Headliners bar selection was less desired than the bar in the hotel, it had less choices for our personal tastes. This was our 5th time here, it's good value and the ambiance was well laid out. The earlier comics we saw were the same as the previous outing a few weeks before the holidays and it was disappointing to see the same jokes and formats used. It was like watching a re-run. The main act comic was nervous and was pretty dry. I don't know if they weren't prepared, nervous or reading the room and had to change things up, he called on two 25+ yr old girls and was polling the usual asks of what they did and tried to make a few jokes around their occupations, it was more conversational than witty/funny as we've seen before. Good for a first outing, this team needs new talent IMHO
