I attended UO for a couple years before transferring. The education was good, but it's a large university so there are going to be those courses where you're one of 100 other students in a huge lecture hall. I also took several Japanese and music courses that had 20-30 students, so it all depends upon what you're taking, of course. The university itself is nice, a lovely setting. It's an arboretum, with over 500 species of trees on campus, and there are several thousand trees on campus as well. Pioneer Cemetery cuts through campus--yes, I've used it as a shortcut. The Oregon Bach Festival is kind of headquartered here, with Festival events taking place at the Hult Center as well as other venues around town. The Museum of Natural and Cultural History sits on the east side of campus and shares history of the city and larger geographical area. I visited and saw a really interesting exhibit about Black history in Eugene and I really appreciated this perspective on my hometown that I didn't learn about in elementary, middle, or high school. There is the ugly, of course, which is Nike's relationship to the university. The company started in Eugene when the famous coach Bill Bowerman used a waffle iron to improve the shoes his runners wore, and student Phil Knight partnered with him and it took off. Federal and state disinvestment in higher education makes for partnerships that are vital to the university, which is happening here. Buildings, athletics facilities, etc. are heavily influenced by or downright decided by the man himself, I'm sure, which is uncomfortable. Hopefully it frees up money in other places to hep students attend. I can't say my review is totally unbiased because of the hometown connection--it has a special place in my heart for that reason. If UO had had the major I wanted, I would have stayed there to complete my education--but that's easy for me to say as an in-state student. But I know several folks from Eugene or beyond who went there and are also happy with the education they received and the setting in which they received it, so it's worth checking out.

Lane Community College downtown is a great place to take classes because the teachers are nice and…read morethe classes are small enough that you can talk to them. It's right by the library bus stop and close to 5th street. You can ride the bus grab a book and go to 5th street to have something to eat. You aren't just a number here, you are a name, with a face and a story, and a journey. The staff is the same too, they take care of you and know you beyond your academics--the entire self is emphasized here. Your social, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health are important. I will be so sad to walk the stage for graduation in May, but so impacted by what I have learned here!

Made it through 2 levels of calculus believe it or not. 2 years of straight As at Lane made me realize maybe I could handle university - graduated with honors with a BS in psych from U of O, now I'm in grad school - ME. Yes, the advisors suck, so write the program that works for you and don't listen to them. The folks at financial aid can answer your important Qs. The professors are top notch! Almost never had a bad one - I think I had one... all the rest were the greatest - best in the country. This school changed my life, go there ready to work hard and recreate your own :) .

Some of the student workers go above and beyond and care so much about their school. The lab on the 3rd floor of chiles has great resources and the staff are all so helpful and wonderful. Both the professors and GTFs are willing to help them succeed by making themselves available, in many cases, after hours for further instruction or clarification. I'm pleased that I choose the University of Oregon's SOJC to attend. I think it is a great choice for anyone who wants to major in journalism and communications.
