Anecdote/Example time: My partner has had many teeth degrade due to depression/fear of dentists, so much so that another dentist told her she'd lose all her teeth. However, when my partner was in incredible tooth pain, we went to Downtown Dental Care as it was recommended by One Iowa. We explained that she had dental anxiety, and when we arrived, everyone (from Joni at the front desk to Dr. Riley himself) was kind, understanding, and patient with my partner. No guilt or blame were given for the state of her teeth. There was only a focus on "get you better" and looking to the future-- no shame or chiding! Prodecures were explained to us step-by-step, all matter of fact without judgement. All tooth care has been presented with options and explanations of each option for us, like the cost physically vs financially for a root canal vs a tooth pulling. Not only have we been given options for treatment, but when Dr. Riley cannot do something himself (either due to his practice (like pulling teeth) or due to cost (root canal), he recommends the best place to go- a surgeon who also understands dental anxiety, or Iowa City Dentistry School for cost. One additional thing to add: My partner has Delta Dental, and the staff, hygienists, and Dr. Riley, have all helped her navigate her insurance and pointed out the next steps she needs to do when they cannot do something for her. It is incredible, personal care. Needless to say, despite my partner's dentist anxiety, she loves the team at Downtown Dental Care!

It's a quaint office in the back of the office park. Everyone I interacted with was extremely nice. My hygienist, Renee, was amazing. She explained everything she was doing and educated me so I fully understood. I thought my last place was great, and it is, but this is next level. When we came across some opportunity spots, I was encouraged by being advised how I can remedy the situation. Dr. Cowherd is great. Very warm, personable, and inviting. Both he & my hygienist reviewed my history fully and they had me review it one last time to ensure everything was captured correctly. We brought him in to Dr. Whittemore, who was great and applied a treatment onto his teeth to arrest the decaying process. This treatment was only a temporary fix. As we knew his decay would eventually cause infection. So, time was definitely of the essence. This is where things got tricky, months later. We had an O. R. Appointment scheduled for surgery with dr whitmore to remove or put caps on his teeth (if the decay hadnt gone to his roots). Unfortunately i didnt answer my phone a couple times they called (my son had pneumonia in the hospital) and our spot was given to another child who needed an OR surgery. Basically; the only other OR surgery availability that Dr whitmore had was in February of 2022. This was way too far out and we didnt have that time so Dr Whittemore was extremely adamant on pulling out his four teeth IN his dentist office only using novacane. They were going to wrap him up in a "burrito" and pull the four teeth out. This sounded traumatic and i was very hesitant but yet everyone in that office was pressuring me to QUICKLY get this done. I definitely appreciated DrWhittemore's push to prevent infection. But In the back of my head, i kept asking myself "why cant he just call around to other dentists he knew that DID have OR time." Especially in our case when our appt was given to someone else.. I figured that was my job. And accepted that. Obviously dr whitmore pulls a lot of teeth and he felt our son could of handled this process. But i felt it was too much, and luckily, i spoke to a relative anesthesiologist about this in office event and he strongly advised against it bec novacane was painful in itself and it was just too traumatic for four teeth. It was better to do it in a hospital. So my relative gave me the name of a pediatric dentist who frequents the Hospital he works at often. Called and met this dentist, who said he believed we did have a little time (it wasnt as urgent as Whitmore's opinion). We got an appt in the OR for October. What's bothersome to me, is when we called to tell Whittemore's office that we were not going to go through with the in office pulling of teeth, they said they were worried about our son and they wanted to refer us to (the same dentist we just made an appt with!!!). Their concern was way too late. Again, They were wanting to pull my sons teeth out a long while before this call. They never even offered "maybe this dental place can do it". Again, I had been stalling with whitmores office bec it didnt feel right to me. So their concern felt upsetting. The best thing about this story and the thing i want to emphasize is that my son's roots werent decayed at all. This dentist was able to give my son caps. So he didnt have to be front of mouth toothless for the next 6 years of his life. This wouldnt of been possible had Dr. Whitmore simply pulled them out in his office. I also want to mention that in-office sedation can be dangerous too. Dr whitmore never offered that, but many dentists do. So, moral to the story- if it doesnt feel right to you, dont do it and look around. Thank god my relative helped get me this appt with this dentist.

This is not a space for kids to feel safe at all as a kid coming in this dentist office, they would frequently tell me to just hold still when I verbally told them I was in excruciating pain. Everything about this office is nasty, they have a waiting room with so many people giving out sicknesses. The rooms are nasty and filthy, they have a very low grade equipment. Whatever you do, do not bring anyone you care about here. These dentists do not care about your health, they explicitly care about their paycheck and that's it.

I ended up having two teeth pulled, one was a wisdom tooth. I had such intense nerve pain and still experience nerve pain when I yawn which had nothing to do with my incision sites. I was not treated well and had to seek other medical attention from another doctor for the intense paralyzed feeling in my jaw. I believe that he did quite a bit of nerve damage for an extraction that was NOT necessary. I was sketched out by the way they do not fully explain how much procedures cost and how insurance covered. I don't think that Botox should be used by a dentist to treat headaches, but that was offered to me. I don't like hearing that my sons braces will cost this much but a friend was offered a steep discount because he's just starting to provide the options of braces. A pretty facade is all this place is and I just paid the bill to match it.

My insurance won't cover my deep cleaning with numbing with my regular dentist. My regular dentist told me to give this clinic a call because they do. The receptionist kept saying "We don't have a periodontist." I asked her "Do you have a dentist for a deep cleaning with numbing?" She said "Well, yes, but we (and she sighed) don't have a periodontist." I don't need a periodontist. I don't need an implant, my gums and jaw are not weak. I called my regular dentist office back and was referred to a different office. I called the new office with no issue. They knew exactly what I needed. No muss no fuss. I really don't know what this lady's problem was, but she must really hate her job.
