Great care, and understanding staff. 10/10 for friendliness, cleanliness, attitude, communication (billing, procedure, and care options) and willing to work with us financially and mentally. LGBTQIA+ friendly, and reccomended by One Iowa. If you are up front with dental anxiety or the amount of money you can spend, Downtown Dental Care bends over backwards to do what they can for you. Anecdote/Example time: My partner has had many teeth degrade due to depression/fear of dentists, so much so that another dentist told her she'd lose all her teeth. However, when my partner was in incredible tooth pain, we went to Downtown Dental Care as it was recommended by One Iowa. We explained that she had dental anxiety, and when we arrived, everyone (from Joni at the front desk to Dr. Riley himself) was kind, understanding, and patient with my partner. No guilt or blame were given for the state of her teeth. There was only a focus on "get you better" and looking to the future-- no shame or chiding! Prodecures were explained to us step-by-step, all matter of fact without judgement. All tooth care has been presented with options and explanations of each option for us, like the cost physically vs financially for a root canal vs a tooth pulling. Not only have we been given options for treatment, but when Dr. Riley cannot do something himself (either due to his practice (like pulling teeth) or due to cost (root canal), he recommends the best place to go- a surgeon who also understands dental anxiety, or Iowa City Dentistry School for cost. One additional thing to add: My partner has Delta Dental, and the staff, hygienists, and Dr. Riley, have all helped her navigate her insurance and pointed out the next steps she needs to do when they cannot do something for her. Recently moved to Des Moines from Kansas City. Needed to get a dental cleaning. Walked in, very nice lady greeting me. Next, hygienist brought me in and took x-rays (I did not get my records sent over from previous place). There was little to no pain, unlike many other places I've been throughout the years. Next was the cleaning. Teeth felt great & clean afterwards. Then Dr. Riley came in to check my teeth and asked if my TMJ bothered me. I said yes & he said if I'd like, he could recommend me to University of Iowa's TMJ program, Win-Win. Def needed that golden nugget since many people are not aware of TMJ and how to possibly fix it. I came to this practice due to the glowing reviews but was completely disappointed and therefore will not return. 1. The front desk, Lucy, is completely incompetent and rude. I do not appreciate being put on hold, having to wait for call back so she can figure something out, and laughing during a phone call at my questions. She was completely unhelpful, rude, and should not be at the face or first impression of the practice. 2. The billing department aka Lucy attempting to explain billing but really failing. If I came in for a routine exam and mentioned tooth pain - I would not be charged because my insurance covers it. But I came in for an exam for tooth pain, and therefore was charged. This is were Lucy's rudeness really shined in explaining the billing process. As a practice, why wouldn't you mention this prior? You ran my insurance prior to figure out what was covered, so why wasn't I notified that this appointment wasn't fully covered? Instead, it was brushed off and told "your insurance will cover it". Yet once I leave, I receive a bill in the mail. This is frustrating. As a practice, you should have your customers best interest and learn to work peoples insurance to benefit them and you. Also, when people call to discuss billing matters and have questions regarding their bill, a great tip is not to laugh at them and essentially tell me its my problem. 3. My time was wasted. From being put on hold to them running behind for an appointment. My time was not valued. It doesn't help that you have to pay for parking and every time they're late, it costs you more. The sad note is, I actually liked the doctor, he was friendly and honest. But will not support a practice or business that doesn't value their customers. There was enough bad things about my experience and other great practices out there that I would rather go to. read more

I would give a 10 if I could. My whole family gets all of our dental care here. They are truly amazing. I had a tooth chip from a previous composite veneer that another dentist did and Dr. Riley got me in right away and fixed me right up. My tooth looked even better than it did before. The icing on the cake for me was that my daughter fell and chipped 3 of her front teeth. They got us into the office that day and gave her 3 composite veneers which look amazing and she says feel amazing. Here is what I really loved about this: 1. We got in right away, Angie, one of the dental hygienist's who always takes care of us, put our daughter at ease and made her feel comfortable. 2. Thankfully the X-rays looked good and when she went in with Dr. Riley, he also put her at ease prior to beginning her procedure and kept her that way the entire time. She hates shots and even though she had to get them for this procedure, she was very calm. 3. Dr. Riley was very careful and caring (as always) and made a really cruddy and scary situation turn into one we were very happy with but most importantly that our 13 year old was happy with. I just want to say thank you to Dr. Riley, Angie and the entire office for working so hard (I think even working overtime) to get us in and taking care of our daughter. That means the world to my husband and I. I cannot recommend them enough! read more

He's soft spoken, thorough, and most importantly has gentle hands! This is going to be brief: Bate and Switch is something we usually associate with car dealerships. I am a retired US Government employee with government dental insurance. Years back I used this dental care and found Dr. Riley professional! I have been away for some years and returned - made an appointment for cleaning. To shorten - . Initial exam was completed paid out of pocket. I previously gave them my insurance and I subsequently received a call and it came back I would pay 80% - Called my carrier and was advised they are "out of network". I cancelled my appointments with Dr. Riley for the cleaning and two teeth for fillings. So I got some names of Doctors in my network and scheduled an appointment. Cancelled it because ... Next I received a call from the office girl who advised she had talked to my carrier and my additional share would be $195.00 "for everything". After some discussion I reaffirmed a new date for the cleaning on one side with the follow-up for the other side and fillings. First cleaning went well - paid the $195.00 as she said again it would cover "everything" including the next appointment. She had offered to let me pay half then, and the other half after the next appointment. I arrived - the other side was cleaned by one Dr.= Pretty good. Waited for Dr. Riley and his assistant with the suction. Dr. Riley's assistant needs improvement with the suctioning technique. Not near as the first Dr.'s. Technique. My mouth is not rooter router. Don't need to jam the thing in. Only one tooth was filled. Went to check out - waited - she was busy with others - she took some time looking at my account and then advised I needed to pay $266.00 more. I became upset - told them so - they wanted me to wait around and they would check with my insurance. One Dr. came from the back - I advised "I don't like being told one thing more than once and then you change it" I paid them the $266.00 and cancelled my other payments and mentioned there are laws against this - called bate and switch. They take time to explain various treatment options and develop a plan that works for you. They are so welcoming and friendly - they even remembered that I was getting married. After moving to Des Moines & my insurance switching up I realized I needed a new dentist and needed to get a bit of dental work done. The first place I went I wasnt very happy with and didnt really feel that comfortable. Then I found Downtown Dental Care and Dr. Riley! Since my first visit I have felt so at ease with Dr. Riley and his staff. Located in the heart of downtown with huge open windows and a modern feel with a staff that makes you feel right at home. They have free coffee, water, kids area, charging stations in the lobby. Parking can be a little tricky but theres usually spots nearby or a parking ramp. Id make sure to have some quarters handy just in case! Dr. Riley is very personable. He makes sure you are comfortable and understanding every step of the process. His staff is the same way. The rooms are super nice and they even let you watch tv during your appt if you choose too! I just like to lean back and listen to the great orchestral covers of popular music. Dr. Riley knows what he is doing and gets you in and out! I would definitely recommend him and this place to anyone looking for a new dentist in Des Moines! read more
