Saw him with another patient and he was awesome handling what looked like a difficult dental situation. Visits are easy to schedule online (they call you back) and on phone. Located in a beautiful area of West Des Moines. Building is easy to find. Interior design and decor of office is clean cut and simple. Very eye catching. They have their own convenience in mind first patient second and parent last. If you have other children not being seen you have to have another adult watch them or leave them home. The doctor went from one treatment room to my daughters without washing her hands and had the same face mask on. While my daughter was laying in the chair the lady helping the doctor sprayed a toxic chemical multiple times right in close proximity to her face. Within a foot. When I talked to the dr. about my issues she didn't want to hear it. She just kept saying she didn't do anything wrong. When I spoke to the office manager about my concerns they said that we could not return. I told her that treatment would likely be delayed if they did not finish the other half and they said they didn't care because we aren't a "good fit" for them. Be warned, unless you're a good girl and do what they tell you, you will not be able to come back and don't dare voice any concerns that you have to them.

It's a quaint office in the back of the office park. Everyone I interacted with was extremely nice. My hygienist, Renee, was amazing. She explained everything she was doing and educated me so I fully understood. I thought my last place was great, and it is, but this is next level. When we came across some opportunity spots, I was encouraged by being advised how I can remedy the situation. Dr. Cowherd is great. Very warm, personable, and inviting. Both he & my hygienist reviewed my history fully and they had me review it one last time to ensure everything was captured correctly. I can remember being afraid at the dentist till I was about well 35 years old so I can only imagine how my 3 year old would do! But Children's Dental Center was the perfect spot to make him feel safe, and at home! This place rules every inch of the building just beams fun, from the waiting room, to the prize pick up spot! They have toys to play with, bright colored chairs, and kids movies playing! The front dest staff was super welcoming. Brittany the hygienist did a great job making my son Nilsson feel at home, letting him pick a movie to watch and doing a really good job making him feel like he was a part of the experience with all the choices being his! What flavor cleaner he wanted, and letting him feel brushes before they went into his mouth! He did a great job with her! The Dentist also came in with a smile and made Nils feel safe and that it was a fun experience! After he was done he gave Nilsson my son a big high five and told him to grab some tokens and pick out a prize from the prize wall.. Naturally he choose two bouncy balls, like we need more balls! We got a really great welcome pack with t-shirt, tooth brush, magnet, and more info on how to best treat Nilsson's growing teeth! What a great experience.. Service is terrible, my daughter had a tooth pulled and the numbing agent made the wrong part of her mouth numb, but was rebuffed when she complained about pain. She sobbed for hours after because it hurt so badly and no one cared, just yank and say it will be done soon. And the ortho side doesn't take our insurance...the old dentist was also orthodontist and was fully covered. Bad experiences most days. Would not recommend.

We brought him in to Dr. Whittemore, who was great and applied a treatment onto his teeth to arrest the decaying process. This treatment was only a temporary fix. As we knew his decay would eventually cause infection. So, time was definitely of the essence. This is where things got tricky, months later. We had an O. R. Appointment scheduled for surgery with dr whitmore to remove or put caps on his teeth (if the decay hadnt gone to his roots). Unfortunately i didnt answer my phone a couple times they called (my son had pneumonia in the hospital) and our spot was given to another child who needed an OR surgery. Basically; the only other OR surgery availability that Dr whitmore had was in February of 2022. This was way too far out and we didnt have that time so Dr Whittemore was extremely adamant on pulling out his four teeth IN his dentist office only using novacane. They were going to wrap him up in a "burrito" and pull the four teeth out. This sounded traumatic and i was very hesitant but yet everyone in that office was pressuring me to QUICKLY get this done. I definitely appreciated DrWhittemore's push to prevent infection. But In the back of my head, i kept asking myself "why cant he just call around to other dentists he knew that DID have OR time." Especially in our case when our appt was given to someone else.. I figured that was my job. And accepted that. Obviously dr whitmore pulls a lot of teeth and he felt our son could of handled this process. But i felt it was too much, and luckily, i spoke to a relative anesthesiologist about this in office event and he strongly advised against it bec novacane was painful in itself and it was just too traumatic for four teeth. It was better to do it in a hospital. So my relative gave me the name of a pediatric dentist who frequents the Hospital he works at often. Called and met this dentist, who said he believed we did have a little time (it wasnt as urgent as Whitmore's opinion). We got an appt in the OR for October. What's bothersome to me, is when we called to tell Whittemore's office that we were not going to go through with the in office pulling of teeth, they said they were worried about our son and they wanted to refer us to (the same dentist we just made an appt with!!!). Their concern was way too late. Again, They were wanting to pull my sons teeth out a long while before this call. They never even offered "maybe this dental place can do it". Again, I had been stalling with whitmores office bec it didnt feel right to me. So their concern felt upsetting. The best thing about this story and the thing i want to emphasize is that my son's roots werent decayed at all. This dentist was able to give my son caps. So he didnt have to be front of mouth toothless for the next 6 years of his life. This wouldnt of been possible had Dr. Whitmore simply pulled them out in his office. I also want to mention that in-office sedation can be dangerous too. Dr whitmore never offered that, but many dentists do. So, moral to the story- if it doesnt feel right to you, dont do it and look around. Thank god my relative helped get me this appt with this dentist.

It was a herculean task to get him to communicate with the other professionals he referred me to. He delayed my treatment and wouldn't even say hello, whenever he had to interact with me (which were rare occasions). I assumed that he didn't realize the difficulty of the case, and knew he was probably not capable of doing the job. He could have just said so, instead of treating me in such an unethical, inhumane and humiliating fashion at the most vulnerable time in my life.
