    Fleur Cinema and Cafe

Fleur Cinema is one of the coolest indie movie theaters in the country! It's clean and modern look, fits right in with the movies they show. All the best in contemporary independent film. Whether it's a new Woody Allen movie, or some documentary you never thought would come to Des Moines! Join their frequent movie club to get deals, on snacks and drinks, and let me tell you they have a great wine and beer selection or get your self a latte before you head in to the theater. They keep the website updated and have a nice online presence so you know when movies are coming and going. The sound in the theaters is great and the screens are the perfect size. This place is a must stop for any movie fan, the ultimate movie going experience when your headed to see films a little off the popular grid. I also love all the prints in the lobby of famous movies from Star Wars, to Wizard of Oz, to The Godfather. This is a movie lovers paradise!

Truly if you like the independent and off the mainstream film this is the place to go. Yes they do have the traditional movie snacks but also serve wine and beer and other goodies. It took me awhile to remember to write this, because I forgot I went there, because they serve beer. Heck I can not even tell you what movie I saw because they have beer. But seriously great place in the DeMo and they host the 48 hours film festival every year!

This is a hidden gem. They serve everything from coffee to beer to homemade snacks. You can join their "club"and earn tasty treats-you earn points with theater purchases. Always comfortable in the theater-I don't feel the need to wear my winter coat to see a movie. Plenty of close parking.

I'm slightly ashamed that I've been here a million times and have yet to grace this lovely establishment with a proper review. In a nutshell, if I were to pick a movie theater to represent the heartbeat of Des Moines, the Fleur Cinema would be my choice. When the weather starts getting cold and rainy and then soon enough, snowy, this place is my get away. I love that they offer matinee prices on the weekend too, so I usually shoot for a late morning or early afternoon time slot. Aside from the fact that they have been serving booze at their theater before it was the cool thing to do, In addition to yummy lattes, and scrumptious snacks the movies they bring in are the BEST. The only reason I'm somewhat familiar with the movies presented at award shows, like the Golden Globes, is because I watch them here. The movies I watch here I walk away from feeling like I just experienced something and usually dabbing my eyes because I just spent the last hour crying in my beer while sitting alone in a room full of strangers watching an incredible movie. Try it on. See if you like how it feels :)

I don't live in Iowa anymore, but the Fleur was one of my go-to places for movies, especially indies that weren't showing anywhere else in Des Moines. They would get a lot more of the art house and Oscar buzz films than other places. When I come down to Iowa from Minneapolis, I always try to find time to swing by if my schedule allows it. I stopped by a couple of days ago to see the latest showing of Baby Driver. The place hasn't changed too much since the last couple years I've been there. Prices are decent and not too expensive. The lobby is clean and cool, with a design obviously created by someone who loves the movies. The popcorn is really good, though the butter leaked through my bag, and I had to put a layer of napkins between the bag and my lap. It looks like they widened the rows of seats in the theater since I was last there, which results in plenty of leg room and an overall comfortable experience. The sound and screen are great (at least the one I went to; can't speak for the other ones). All in all, if you're in Des Moines and are a movie lover, the Fleur is the best choice to make for your film going experience.

Purchasing tickets online is easy enough and I can add the tickets to my Apple Wallet. A plus in this age of electronics. You can still purchase tickets old school at the counter when you arrive too. When you purchase your ticket (either at the counter or online) you select your seat. When you present your QR code at the counter you are given a paper ticket. Sometimes there is an attendant to take the paper ticket and sometimes check in is with the person who gave it to you... Inconsistent...yes. A problem...not really. You can pick from multiple experiences in high definition and audio. I'm cheap and just usually go for the standard format. Concessions are typical. This complex has the lounging recliners in all their theater choices. I enjoy these. The seats are wide so you're not cramped at all and they're pretty comfortable. The one downside that the theater has no control over... People. And people can suck sometimes... - If there are over 3/4 of the seats empty in a theater... Why do people have to pick a seat right next to an already occupied one? Especially when that person is not part of their party... When you pick your seat you can see which seats are already taken. - Why do some people feel the need to remove their shoes and socks in the theater...? That's just gross. smh - And chew with your mouth closed... I shouldn't be able to hear you crunching on your popcorn three rows away. I get it. You paid for your ticket to get in just like I did. You do you buttercup! I don't expect people to be in suits and dresses...but there is such a thing as being TOO comfortable. Well... That turned out to be a little longer than I had initially planned I guess. It is what it is. Lol

Nothing the employees could do so not their fault :) best time to go is weekday afternoons, there's no one there!! Food is delicious, thank you to another reviewer for suggesting the chicken strips with gravy. Pricey, but it's comparable to other dine-in theaters in the area. Wish there were more accessible restrooms near theaters 7-9, walking across the huge pavilion in the middle of the movie is sort of a bummer. Otherwise, great experience and I'll be back!!

Updating my review after 6 years - but still five stars!…read more This is a movie theater that also brews beer and serves food. And they have no business making food that good!! Going to a movie here has become a tradition for our family when we're home for holidays. We enjoy the control of picking our seats out in advance, and love that they have nice leather reclining seats. We also love that they do their own fun version of "previews" before the actual previews start - funny video clips, related snippets to the movie, etc. It's so personalized and fun! But what we love most isn't the movies at all. It's not even the chairs. IT'S THE GRAVY. Yes, you read that right. They make this pepper gravy that is simply out of this world. My family and I exclusively order the chicken tenders and fries as a mere vehicle for this deliciousness. Oh, and ask for double gravy - you'll need it. For my true Midwesterners: they have perfect "runny restaurant ranch" too! And their fries are divine. I'm sure other things on their menu are good too - we've been recommended their breakfast pizza (it has that gravy as the sauce) and chicken sandwich (again, with gravy as the dipping sauce) so we may branch out soon. We like their drinks too - we've had good cocktails and my brother and dad like their beers! The service is great - they take orders before the movie/during previews and get it out fast so the food/drink service doesn't disrupt the movie watching. They have an app you can order from and a button to push with any requests too. I know it sounds so weird, but we genuinely look forward to movies together so we can all eat fries and gravy on our little trays in a recliner at Flix. The BEST!
