We've been here a couple times for the movies but today was the first time we ordered food. I was pleasantly surprised by how good our food was. My husband and I both had the chicken club sandwich. The bun was homemade. Everything was hot, the chicken, the bacon in it, the French fries. The service was good and the ordering process was easy. Super fun and enjoyable, except for the elderly couple (the only other people in our theater) who talked at full volume the entire movie like they were in their living room. Nothing the employees could do so not their fault :) best time to go is weekday afternoons, there's no one there!! Food is delicious, thank you to another reviewer for suggesting the chicken strips with gravy. Pricey, but it's comparable to other dine-in theaters in the area. Wish there were more accessible restrooms near theaters 7-9, walking across the huge pavilion in the middle of the movie is sort of a bummer. Otherwise, great experience and I'll be back!! read more

Updating my review after 6 years - but still five stars! This is a movie theater that also brews beer and serves food. And they have no business making food that good!! Going to a movie here has become a tradition for our family when we're home for holidays. We enjoy the control of picking our seats out in advance, and love that they have nice leather reclining seats. We also love that they do their own fun version of "previews" before the actual previews start - funny video clips, related snippets to the movie, etc. It's so personalized and fun! But what we love most isn't the movies at all. It's not even the chairs. IT'S THE GRAVY. Yes, you read that right. They make this pepper gravy that is simply out of this world. My family and I exclusively order the chicken tenders and fries as a mere vehicle for this deliciousness. Oh, and ask for double gravy - you'll need it. For my true Midwesterners: they have perfect "runny restaurant ranch" too! And their fries are divine. I'm sure other things on their menu are good too - we've been recommended their breakfast pizza (it has that gravy as the sauce) and chicken sandwich (again, with gravy as the dipping sauce) so we may branch out soon. We like their drinks too - we've had good cocktails and my brother and dad like their beers! The service is great - they take orders before the movie/during previews and get it out fast so the food/drink service doesn't disrupt the movie watching. They have an app you can order from and a button to push with any requests too. I know it sounds so weird, but we genuinely look forward to movies together so we can all eat fries and gravy on our little trays in a recliner at Flix. The BEST! read more

Wow! The best movie theater in Des Moines. I was impressed. I was like a little kid in a candy shop and enjoyed the whole experience. The selection of beers (BTW all their own brews!), food, and seating. We were in theater 6 with dine in service. It was very upkept. Seats were clean and as if they were not worn out like other theaters. Little tables for plates. Nicely spaced out. Reclining chair feature too. Even the service was exceptional. At the bar we were greeted and served by Bryce. All the beer samples and great convos made the bar experience excellent. At our seats we were served by Davin. Very outgoing, spunky attitude and happy to serve. Took our orders and accommodated food intolerances. Ordered the steak and avocado wrap with fries. Delicious and came out piping hot and crisp. Flix has been a go-to when out and about at Merle Hay Mall. It's a must to stop at Flix for a beer. I'm not much of a movie go-er, so my review will be about the bar and service aspect. Beers are brewed on-site, I believe. The Luna Rosa was my favorite until they changed the recipe. Still good, just not as good as before. They also serve other local beers along with ciders and cocktails. Food is decent, typical for bar food. I'm more likely to order an appetizer than a meal. Brisket loaded fries have some nice flavor. Considering it's a movie theater, the butter popcorn is good as well. Good friendly service. Staff is always nice and attentive. I was given a coupon for a free appetizer when my order was incorrect. Hi my grandsons 14th birthday birthday. I Ordered 2 pink lemonades/ice teas.l & one Dr Pepper. Received one arnold Palmer/pink lemonade and one iced tea-lemonade, and one Dr. pepper. Later I ordered cheese balls. I could've taken the two other orders of cheese balls before we ordered food and an order of queso that they brought to us by mistake. We got our drinks and our cheese balls and then later we ordered popcorn. My grandson now wanted popcorn. They brought one larger bowl of popcorn & 2 xtra bowls which we ordered. When we ordered more popcorn, they brought a tiny amount in the bowl for three people so at least my grandson had more popcorn to eat. This is supposed to be unlimited popcorn, We asked for popcorn for third time and he said is this a refill and my daughter said no so then we got a full bowl of popcorn. My grandson then wanted another refill of Dr Pepper and my daughter and I asked for one refill of strawberry lemonade/iced tea - Arnold Palmer just 1 so my daughter & J could split 1 since the glasses were so large. So the third popcorn we received was at least full, so all three of us could share it and my daughter got a strawberry lemonade and I got the iced tea like they wanted us to split it ourselves and which we did but then everything was poured all over everywhere when we mixed yhff edm in th o our glasses. I thought seriously!!! I came here last year and was dissatisfied with the Service& food last year. I thought I would give them another chance. Well, I will have to say they did not disappoint me and they were bad again. I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt it didn't happen. They ran my card twice for a transaction! Claimed that it was a pending transaction and one would 'fall off' but the transaction amounts were completely different from each other. Would not remedy it. Claimed it was an error in their system and would clear off in five days. Just excuses and no remedies. $62 dinner ended up costing TWICE that! read more

The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars from us at this point is due the automatic tip policy. I get why some businesses feel this is necessary, but I guarantee you that you would get a bigger tip from us without forcing it onto our check! We've enjoyed Flix over our years living nearby. We especially love their fan nights for classic (or cult classic) movies. It's SO fun when they make a big event out of some of them like Princess Bride, Harry Potter and Star Trek to name a few. They often have really cool menu items to go along with movies they're showing for the month. They do themed alcohol as well, but that is nothing to us since we don't drink. Love it when they do theme non-alcoholic takes though! We've had an issue here and there, but their management is receptive. For example, one time we sat in chairs that were really poorly placed and made for a distracting experience. When we brought it up, they looked into it and addressed the issue. Really appreciated that the manager gave a care. I would definitely recommend Flix for date night or family night. Their rewards for their club membership are pretty generous as well! read more

Love places like this. First of all, movie theaters have been through such hard times recently that the majority of them aren't even trying anymore. It's like, here's your chair, your screen, and your terrible corn dog nuggets. What a reward for not illegally watching the movie, huh? So any place like this that makes the experience at all pleasurable is great. In the middle of the lobby is a bar & grill area. The menu they have is actually pretty expansive. Burgers, pizza, wraps, wings, even fish 'n' chips. Everyone will find something to eat here. The food was good. I had some wings, I had some pizza, and I had a burger. The wings were hot and crispy, the pizza was thin crust and crispy and good, the burger was juicy and served with fun little cheese curds. Not Michelin star quality, but definitely an ok place to have dinner before, or during, the movie. The theatre itself was pretty sweet. Stadium seating with foot rests. Tables that swing in or swing away from you. Full services with very sneaky servers that don't affect the movie-watching experience at all. Fine quality picture and audio. I was a fan. Overall, I'm giving this place five stars because in a world where movie theatres are just so burnt out, this place is striving for success. And I appreciate that greatly. read more

Turns out Flix does brunch! We went this morning for the 10:45 showing of the Black Panther sequel. While the movie itself was about 30 minutes longer than I would have liked, the service at Flix was great and we were largely happy with the brunch and our drinks. My only complaint is I wish they had a few more options on the menu for breakfast OR knock the ones they have out of the park. I'm usually a sweet breakfast person and while the bacon was perfect, the French toast was only fine. I'd love to see something else in that world in the future, like a waffle or pancake dish. Always a blast to visit; make sure to come early have/try a couple craft beers, get your ticket bought right at the bar "save time", for more beer haha....then close out that tab and go get settled in early, the movie highlights/cameos are always well done. Take your half beer from the bar in soo you don't get thirsty before ordering, put in your order keep the beer coming, remember you are there for at least two hours with food. I always get a starter course in early then during movie I'll pop in a snacking order with soda mid way; I tend towards the Bavarian Pretzel with Beer Mustard & Cheese sauce, pretty much always too haha....I really soaks up the brews and is salty enough to introduce the soda in the mix...sounds like alot "Yes" soo skip your breakfast ;))) sit back, relax, sip, eat, and really enjoy the Show...Of Course! Honestly was a fine experience! I think the most frustration came from the service honestly. The food was incredible, the movie was great & the atmosphere was lovely. Getting service? A bit hard & quite delayed. A fine experience, but, I don't know if the gratuity was a valid showcasing of their job well done. Also note: automatic gratuity. Me and my underage friends were given drinks that contained alcohol. Last week me and 3 of my friends went to go see "How to train your dragon" and we went to flix because in the past we've had good experiences. We did not have a good experience last week. Firstly, their online system was down so i was given a bill that i already paid for. Additionally me and my friend were handed cocktails that had alcohol in it. My friend and I are both under 18, nevertheless under 21. No matter how old someone is, no one should be given a drink with alcohol in it, without confirming it was theirs, and they were of the age. Again, no one should just be handed it. The waiter just sat the drinks down infront of us without thinking another second about it. You could be giving a recovering alcoholic a drink, which could lead to so many bad things. And if me and my friends weren't as responsible, we could've drank the drinks without knowing, and drove home. We were smart enough to look on their online menu to see it contained alcohol. I did confront one of the workers but all he did was take the drinks. Looking back I definitely should've asked for a refund. read more

This is the perfect place to watch a movie!! All of the seats recline and are luxuriously soft! The food is reasonably priced and super tasty! I love that they offer healthy choices like hummus and veggies! But we had the pizza too which was super delicious! Waitstaff was attentive and helpful; movie was great! Pretty exciting place to drink and watch sports and hang out in the Merle Hay Mall in Urbandale - a suburb in Northern Des Moines Iowa. Definitely somewhere that I would hang out if I was in town especially if I wanted to watch a big sports game. Or see a lot of pretty people - just one thing though don't be drinking and driving people. No matter how pretty you are. Or they are. I know Iowa public transport isn't great but let's not make those mistakes anymore. Not worth the money. Not worth the injuries. Not worth the death. I've been a Flix customer for years. I don't go to actual move theaters often, but when I do I prefer Flix due to comfort of the seats and the dinner/drink options you can choose to partake in. Tonight was the first movie outing since Covid hit and I'm sorry to say service missed the mark. We started the night with an order of a bottle of wine, a pumpkin beer, popcorn and a small pizza with garlic and ranch dipping sauces. First, the wine comes out, and both glasses were filthy. We had to send them back. It could have been grease from the servers gloves, we get it nbd, just bring us new ones. Ok. Cool. My boyfriend went to the restroom and in the process grabbed our waitress and added an order of bbq wings to our order. We get our popcorn, no issues. Pizza comes, without the ranch and garlic dipping sauce he asked for. Ok, maybe it's coming with the wings. Well we waited, and the wings never showed up. We waited about 20 min and I finally put another order in. Still hungry we ask for cheese curds and another pumpkin beer (all written down for our server!) as well. The waitress brings out the wings, says the curds are all gone and asks if we'd like something else. No problem we'll take the pretzel. I get a bill before my bf gets his beer or the pretzel. As our waitress hands us the bill she said verbatim "your pretzel is on the way should be out in a few minuets." Never got the pretzel or the additional beer. I can understand everyone has a one off night, maybe make a mistake here and there, but our whole experience with this place this trip has been disappointing at best. Please do better Flix. Especially since you would like patrons frequent your business during the midst of a pandemic. Not certain we'll be back. read more

I haven't been here in a bit. I am old fashioned where I just like to watch my movie without disruptions. However this worked in my favor to come here today. Got online on my phone and a computer to check out times. One item showed a certain time I wanted, but my phone did not. I called them and just quickly confirmed if the time I wanted was available. Is was. I will have to keep in mind for next time I start trying to book on my phone. I purchased the tickets. Got all the warnings about being early and that was that. I printed my ticket ahead of time so when I arrived I wasn't sure what I needed. I got in line and the lady behind the counter asked if I had already purchased. When I said yes she said go ahead and go on in. BIRDS OF PREY was the movie. In the middle of the day, on release weekend. It was not busy. Perfect. The waitress was there in an instant when I sat down. She was blunt and awesome. She went over the options for the special drinks that were for the movie release. She let me try a couple of the beers, but I settled on the yummy mix drink. She was great, and when it came time for the movie you noticed them less and the movie was great. Come close to the end of the movie and they dropped off the checks and sneaked back around to pick up the money or card or whatever. It was nicer that the theater wasnt that full. Less people means more focus on the movie. The important part was the excellent staff, the yummy release drinks to go with the movie theme, and quick wit of the staff as well. I liked the experience a little more each time I visit. I have another visit scheduled in a few weeks. It will be a showing of an older movie, and well see how well they treat that. I'm still digging on Flix! I have had multiple meals here now just in the Restaurant and enjoy going to movies here! It's comfortable seating and wait staff make the movie experience great! As far as the food goes.. It's really great! It's maybe a little pricier than normal bar food, but hey I like a place in the mall where you can get a good meal, have beer, and have good service!
