Step back a hundred years and imagine life in Burlington in the late 19th century. What was shopping like? What sort of vehicles traveled here? What were people wearing? Where were they heading? The marker reads, "This impressive Italianate-style commercial building with a massive five-foot tall cast iron cornice was historically known as the Exchange Block. Designed by local builder William Townsend, the building was intended to stylistically complement the former Vermont Life Insurance Company building adjacent to the east on Main Street, which was completed in 1877 and also constructed by Townsend. The first occupant of the Exchange Block was E.P. Shaw, who owned a fashionable men's clothing store in the corner storefront. The beautiful mountains and the lake just make me smile! This college town has a fairly liberal vibe and most residents love Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders, who used to be the mayor of this city. Church Street is always a must do, this is Burlington's pedestrian friendly shopping and dining district. It's a bit like Santa Monica's Third St Promenade in Los Angeles. This area is quite lively most of the time, but if you wander a block or two away, you will find some better priced restaurants. For a small city in a mostly rural state, I'd consider this a foodie town. One of my more recent discoveries up here is the delicious hard cider! I highly recommend visiting Citizen's Cider, so tasty! If you love the outdoors, this is the place to be! This region features skiing, hiking, water sports and a host of other outdoor activities. They have some great biking trails here as well! In my opinion, one of the top notch east coast ski resorts (Stowe) is located within 1 hour of here. Heck, even if it's not ski season, it's nice to head over there for a gondola ride, hard cider breweries, cheese tastings, hikes and more. I love to end my day down by the lake watching the sunset! Grab a drink at Splash at the Boathouse or just chill near the rocks and watch the sun go down behind the mountains. I currently live in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area, a location packed with too many angry people, so now it's even more of a treat to come to serene Burlington! This place is amazing, so many friendly faces and a nice laid back vibe.

Every time I talk to someone from Burlington, they are always friendly and willing to help in any way that they can. You wouldn't think so with the weather they get here in the winter, but it doesn't seem like the bitter cold makes anyone here bitter or mean. University of Vermont makes up a lot of this city and I am glad it does, it encourages people living in the area to go to a great school despite the surburban feel of Vermont. Burlington, don't lose your charm.

The town is the home of one of the Lake Champlain ferries and operates year round to Essex, New York. The library is smaller - the town only recorded 3912 residents in 2020 - so there wasn't much room. But they had a table, a power outlet (a bit of a stretch) and a free wifi. I hung out here for a bit and then headed on to check out the ferry. There are public restrooms here and it is located next to the Charlotte town hall. Finally the day of reckoning came and I had to apply for a replacement. I filled out the form online beforehand, (THIS IS KEY FOR ANY BUREAUCRATIC ENCOUNTER) came in the morning, interfaced with the touchscreen terminal to get my number, and waited. The waiting room was about half full, but mine was the next number to come up. I guess the others weren't getting replacement cards. I went to the window, presented my papers, answered a few simple questions, thanked the lady, and headed out. Fifteen minutes all told. But seriously, thank a bureaucrat today. They have feelings and they don't get treated particularly well. If they improve the external signage, I'll come back and give the place five stars. Very hard to find, the instructions on Social Security website were good but not intuitive. The building is a real warren.

What did not count as proof of residency: my VT driver's license, the letter I received by mail from the VT DMV approving the eye exam form sent in by my optometrist (dated April 2025), my 2024 Social Security 1099, the 2024 1099-G VT sent me last year. They would have accepted a recent utility bill that was printed and mailed and dated within the last 4 months (if it had been in my name not in my husband's), my property tax bill (if it was in my name not in trust), tax forms dated within the last 4 months (it's November!). I finally downloaded a credit card bill and my last homeowners insurance bill which was annual but luckily dated only last month and emailed them to the person so they could print them. They then asked me where I got my social security card from (sadly my mother is no longer with us so I can't ask her - I think it came by mail from the central office in Philly), all of the names I have ever had on an official ID (they were looking for a middle initial I think - I am 74 so it goes back a ways - there is one on my birth certificate but I haven't used it for at least a half century). I had an appointment and a folder of documentation based on the website but it still took over an hour.

The county is the furthest to the northeast of New York State, bordering Vermont (across Lake Champlain) and Quebec to the north. The building is two stories and was constructed in 1889 of ashlar stone and brick in a Romanesque style. It has a central tower with an open bell tower and pyramidal roof. The attached Surrogate's Building was built in 1884-1885, and is a two-story, Italianate style brick building. On a Sunday morning, the building was well secured and locked up so I was not able to tour the interior. I pressed my nose up against a few doors but there's nothing to see except x-ray machines in the hallway. The grounds, however, are beautifully kept and the red brick building is photogenic.
