We went in winter and it was beautiful with snow and ice everywhere, but I believe it would be equally pretty when it's warmer and one could wander about a bit more. There is a pretty library nearby as well and a nice truss bridge. It is closed in winter (after October?) so we'll have to back for a better look.

The Old Round Church in Richmond is a scenic spot for a wedding-- and everyone seems to know it…read more In the summer, if you drive through Richmond between 10am and 4pm you will nearly always see vestiges of wedding. Because the Church is not a practicing church (there are no weekly services) they do as many as three weddings there a day on Saturdays and Sundays May-October. The up side of this is that your date is unlikely to be fully blocked out. The down side to this is that you have little buffer on either side of the ceremony to decorate and un-decorate the building. The inside of the church is well-restored and if you're into a super-new-england-yankee aesthetic, you're in for a treat. It's unique inside and out and the views of the surrounding mountains outside add to the ambiance. Another tiny set-back (but not enough to knock a star off in my opinion, there are too many great things about the space) is that those Yankee Protestants of the early 1800s were by an large a lot smaller than we are today, so the pews can be a little tight for larger (or pregnant) guests. Also, it's BYO - officiant-- so you can have the scenic, yankee, vermonty setting in a church and you can have your ceremony be any denomination you want...or none. Fab.

The town is the home of one of the Lake Champlain ferries and operates year round to Essex, New York. The library is smaller - the town only recorded 3912 residents in 2020 - so there wasn't much room. But they had a table, a power outlet (a bit of a stretch) and a free wifi. I hung out here for a bit and then headed on to check out the ferry. There are public restrooms here and it is located next to the Charlotte town hall. Allegedly, a water-dinosaur with a long neck, small head, long tail and flippered feet. Yes, Champ. This stone near the lake provides an image of Champ looking rather smiley, and her official scientific name, Belua Aquatica Champlainiensis. Incidentally, Champ has been labeled as an officially protected species by the government of Vermont. I had several opportunities to spot Champ but never did. The marker reads, "On Oct. 4, 1905, at 2:30 p.m. in front of the bay window in the parlor of this house, Grace Goodhue married Calvin Coolidge of Plymouth Notch, VT. Calvin Coolidge became President of the United States and Grace served as First Lady from 1923-1929. Built in 1899, the house at 312 Maple Street was the family home of Capt. Andrew Goodhue, his wife Lemira, and their only child Grace Anna. Capt. Goodhue was federal steamboat inspector for the Lake Champlain Transport Co. The Goodhue family moved here while Grace was a student at the University of Vermont. Grace was a founding member of the VT Chapter of Pi Beta Phi, the first national college fraternity for women. The house was restored in 1993 by Champlain College." The marker was erected in 1997 by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. It does not have a number. Calvin Coolidge served as 30th POTUS from 1923 to 1939. Grace moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, to work at the Clarke School for the Deaf, where she taught deaf children to communicate through lip reading rather than sign language. That was where she met Calvin Coolidge. As her husband advanced in politics, Grace remained largely out of the political spotlight, focusing on her family and various charitable activities. She became the Second Lady of the United States in 1921 when Calvin Coolidge was elected Vice President, and later the First Lady when he became President in 1923. Grace was known for her wit, charm, and dedication to causes such as the Red Cross and the Visiting Nurse Association. The obelisk at the center of the square opposite Plattsburgh City Hall is the 135-foot-tall (41 m)…read moreMacdonough Monument that honors the victory of American soldiers and sailors in the Battle of Plattsburgh, also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain. It was the end of the final British invasion of the War of 1812 and it took place in September 1914. Lieutenant (later Commodore) Thomas Macdonough, commanding the American naval forces on the Lake, established a secure base at Otter Creek (Vermont), and constructed several gunboats. Among them, the USS Eagle, USS Saratoga, the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Preble. The British were able to construct the HMS Confiance along with the gunboats Chubb, Linnet and Finch. Many of the British dead, not including the officers, were buried in an unmarked mass grave on nearby Crab Island, the site of the military hospital during the battle, where they remain today.
