Roses and finery at the Melbourne Cup
    PHILIPPA B.

If there is one thing that Melbourne does exceptionally well, it is sporting events. On the first Tuesday in November, 110,000 people don their finest and head to Flemington to find a perch on which to be part of the famous Melbourne Cup, one of the world's richest turf races run over 3,200 metres (close to two miles on the old scale). I won't say they go there to watch it, because for a large proportion of the crowd there must be little chance of actually seeing it - particularly if by the time it is run (3pm, the seventh of ten races on the day) the bubbly and cocktail slushies have rendered them beyond caring. Whether you can see the horses or not though, the atmosphere is electric and it's a day you can thoroughly enjoy at all sorts of levels. Given a choice, I would have to opt for a table in the Terrace Restaurant overlooking the finish line rather than a folding chair in the carpark. But either way, it's a day when I'm happy to borrow a fascinator and get down to business. Sparkling, anyone?

Being from the US i didnt know what to expect but i was pleasantly surprised by all the people dressed up. This track was a little confusing at first but after a beer and hotdog i figured it out. All and all the wife and i had a great time.

Prices are better Sunday & Monday, with $40 for 40 laps. This causes Sunday's to be the packed time. So, if you plan on taking advantage of that Sunday price, you should book ahead. We had come in around 3:30 pm, and the guy behind the desk explained to us that they were all booked up, so our options were to come back at 6 p.m., or just come back another week. We made up our minds about an hour later and opted to call them and come back at 6 p.m. A safety briefing, hair net and fitting helmet later, you get set in your go kart on the track. They help you get fitted in, with buckles, I ended up needing a tighter fitting seat. It's fun, after a little while, I admit, I was kinda over it. My friend was getting dizzy from the fumes, and if you have motion sickness, maybe watch out as this track is very curvy. I'm not the competitive type at all and can't take these racing adrenaline junkies who bump into you to get ahead, that's just not necessary. Either way, it was a good different way to spend my Sunday. You drive on and keep notice of the lights, and be a courteous driver. When someone spins out, to prevent any accidents, the lights go amber and you are supposed to drive slower. Green means go, and red you only see if something serious has happened. Ah and they breathalyze everyone before you go on the track. No pre-gaming allowed guys. When you are all finished up, you can get a print out of your stats and how you did. Protip: come up with a good racing driver name, it helps keep things interesting.

"Wow, it's noisy in here!"…read more Those were my first thoughts upon stepping inside the main waiting area of Le Mans. It's basically a big open tin shed with kids running, jumping and tumbling over everything, all while screaming at the top of their lungs. But you have to expect something like this at a venue that hosts a lot of kid's parties. We came here for my nephew's 6th birthday and didn't take part in any of the activities, but just from watching you could tell that him and his group of friends were having the time of their life. There is a large indoor area that overlooks the two smaller and much more kid friendly tracks that are here. Of the two smaller tracks there is one that is designed for kids aged 4-10 and it's much slower than the larger tracks, but with the kids in our group spending half their time crashing into the tire walls, or each other, it was perfect for what they needed. There are two larger tracks designed for much faster go-karts and older attendees at either end of the venue. From inside here you can have kids parties, grab a bite to eat or a drink. The food here is what you would expect it to be; pies, sausage rolls, hot dogs, chips etc and the drinks on offer are no more exciting. There are also a couple of pool tables and video games to play on. Next door to the Go Kart venue is laser tag, run by the same company. The kids all had a ball in here, and the laser tag arena looked pretty big with lots of ramps and places to hide. Prices here seemed pretty reasonable, but if you're thinking of coming here your best bet would probably be the two-hour lock in session that was only $22. I'm not sure I could handle two hours of being trapped inside somewhere that looks and sounds like a kid-friendly rave though.

Who wouldn't like laser tag?! Le Mans Laser Zone can accommodate 40 people in battle and using the latest laser tag vests and phasors, YOU get to complete missions! We went in a big group and used the 2 hours $22 option and by the end we were exhausted but had heaps of fun.

The most popular of these is the BMW Caulfiled Cup held at the beginning of October. This event is one of the races that grants a horse direct entry into the Melbourne Cup field if they win. Therefore, due to the race's high class field of runners and difficult conditions, the Caulfield Cup is often used as an indicator of each runner's likely performance in the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup.
