Okay, it probably has lost some of its lustre, but honestly, since ownership changed hands, the new corporate owners have done their best to maintain the tradition of this theatre. In fact, the Astor goes an awful long way to try and maintain the aura of the golden age of cinema. Not a huge theater but still not small. Parking can be the fun bit especially if your not familiar with the area, always good to check out the option prior to getting there. They have a good selection of foods And drinks to enjoy while watching the show they are a little on the expensive side but it's what you expect when going out really. The seats are a bit old but are in theme with the decor of the theater. The other facilities are nice, there clean and easily accessible depending on the crowd at the time. Would happily come back and see another show.

It wasn't too bad, but as can be expected, there really isn't anything all that flash about it. There is a small sign "a not for profit artspace" above their door. Fortyfive Downstairs rents out their gallery space for artists who want an exhibition. And there are different exhibitions here every four or two weeks. Downstairs in the former textiles factory space there are two spaces for exhibitions and a theatre space. I haven't been to the theatre here yet. I must go sometimes as it has regular burlesque shows. Both the very large gallery space and the second smaller space have white walls, high ceilings and wooden floors. The exhibitions in these spaces will have, most likely, changed by the time that you read this so I won't tell you about the art that I saw. And the quality of the next exhibition depends mostly on the artist exhibiting but the gallery is also selective and exhibitions are generally of a high standard.

Revolt art space is a wonderful, amazing venue located in the suburb of Kensington, which is about…read more10 minutes away from the CBD. When I first came here it was to see one of my favorite bands (Bonjah) play on Australia day 2010. I was blown away. The huge 'factory' is abundant with art. It's visual candy - everywhere. There are separate rooms with couches filled with sculptures and paintings. It has a main stage with with ample room for standing to watch a band or performer. Performers vary from dancers to mimes to comedians to actors. Revolt is open most days - it has a chill atmosphere you can just call in have a coffee and read a book or attend one of the many events which can be found on their website. The staff at Revolt are a family - literally. They took lease of the space in 2009 and have worked hard to make it what it is today. I was lucky enough to volunteer during the 2011 Fringe Festival which was a great experience. I encourage you all to call into Revolt & check it out, if only for the visual experience. It's a maze, designed with both performers and audience in mind. The crew make sure you're getting a truly unique experience by either attending or using Revolt to stage your event. What's more (and the bit I think I like the most) is their philosophy of supporting new artists. For someone with a great idea but not a big plan on how to market that idea, this is possibly the place to approach to stage it. It's a bit of a secret, really, tucked down a back street in an unassuming warehouse district, but not one that should stay so.

The location of the Centre proved to be quite a challenge to designer Ashton Raggatt McDougall, being situated on post war sloping hills and uneven ground he had to come up with something special in order to achieve acoustic quality. The building seems to be covered in an irregular honeycomb shaped pattern giving it a shell like texture. At night time light escapes through some of these shells and makes for a beautiful structural appearance. The Recital Centre showcases a range of different performances from stage shows to music performances and even has some amazing artwork displayed on level 1. You can organise to have a guided tour of the MRC in which you will be atken throughout the building and can learn all about the design of the performance spaces, appreciate the artwork and explore backstage. The tours will set you back $15 full price and $10 for concession and they last usually about 1 hour, well worth it if you have time and are wanting to explore Melbourne.

By some stroke of luck we managed to secure ourselves a couple of tickets to see Waiting for Godot…read morebefore it sold out. Daunting however, was arriving and finding ourselves in the fourth row. The thought of being THAT close to Sir Ian was more than little-old-me could handle. Nevertheless, a good glass or two of the Comedy Theatre's bubbly sorted me out and made me feel just hazy enough to relax and not tense up everytime Sir Ian did turn his gaze our way. The Comedy Theatre is elegant with its obvious Spanish influences. It's smallish size means that even those in the back rows will get a pretty good view.

The comedy theatre gets some of the best acts, come comedy festival time. I saw Keating here a few…read moreyears back, actually shed a tiny tear at the end. (This was when that rodent was still in charge, of course). I saw Steven Curry and Shaun Micallef's take on Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore a year or two later, came away a little disappointed. But this isn't a review of the play, the theatre space was fantastic (an aisle on the right of the stage would be handy as you have to hop over other patrons legs), seating a lot but every seat with a view. Stage massive and could suit large productions. Gallery space downstairs fantastic with a number of rooms able to show works by different artists. Again a great use of an old building's space. Bar a little ordinary with one red & 2 whites to choose from & your standard fare, wine only average at $8 a glass. Wonderful space I'll be visiting again.

When I was growing up, it was derelict and home to many homeless and winos. And of course the fascination to kids all around. All the "cool kids" would break in to throw rocks at the window, or so my cool older sister would tell me. I was too busy at trombone practice. Newly renovated to resemble a New York loft, the substation is opened for business. Ideal for many functions, current uses are performances, art shows and markets. I do believe they can host wedding, though I'm not sure they have kitchen facilities. All in all, it's a modern building with multiple uses. The only (major) downfall is there is no aircon. Meaning during summer it can and does get extremely hot. And for that reason, it's 3, not 4 stars.
