I have been going to Hugh for 30 years and his hygienist are supposedly experienced in parodical dentistry. He sent me to Brock Pumphrey. They supposedly were foes. What a crap show. I called to see how the 6 month process worked and that i was interested in getting started to straighten my son 12 yrs old and re-straighten my daughter 19 yrs old teeth.(bad with retainer) The lady seemed irritated with my question and gave me a number to refer my son to since he is under 15 yrs old. She proceeded to hang up and i stopped her and said what about my daughter she is 19 yrs old and i wanted to get info on their 6 month process. She appeared irritated again and i could hear a slight huff in her voice before she said hold on and went to transfer me to someone else. Late in life I developed a resistance to novocaine - uh oh! Luckily I heard about Dr. Flax and found someone that could treat my cavities with no pain whatsoever. This was the last of 4 dentists I visited for "smile consultations". I had braces when I was in high school but was never really good about using my retainers so my teeth are only mostly straight. Since then, I've also had 2 professional bleachings (3 years apart) and more recently, a deep cleaning for gum issues that are starting to become a problem. My point is, my teeth look fine and no one would ever have anything bad to say about them, but they certainly aren't Hollywood perfect either. I've always been intrigued by veneers and the way they can improve a B- smile to an A++ smile so after thinking about them, and saving up, for the last 6 years or so (I had heard that veneers were approx $1k each), I finally decided this would be the year to start seriously considering getting veneers and Googled my way to 4 cosmetic dentists with fantastic reviews. NOTE: I automatically crossed off the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry because I knew it would be insanely expensive simply because it's a "name" everyone knows and thinks of first when it comes to veneers. Below, I'm going to review THIS particular practice and link you to the other dentists so I can keep these reviews as relevant as possible. Also, keep in mind that I'm reviewing these practices for COSMETIC dentistry only. If I were to guess, all 4 of these would be great choices for general dentistry. Dentist #1: Dr. Boulden (http://www.yelp.com/biz/atlanta-dental-spa-roswell) + spent 90% of my appointment talking to the Dr. + tried to "up-sell" me on a new perio-tray technology for my gum issues - $1700 per veneer Dentist #2: Dr. Giesler (http://www.yelp.com/biz/dina-j-giesler-dds-magd-and-associates-atlanta) + spent 85% of my appointment talking to the Dr. + quoted me $1500 total for bleaching & bonding to achieve the look I wanted without veneers + $1500 per veneer if I really want to go that route Dentist #3: Dr. Patel (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ashish-c-patel-dds-marietta) - spent 50% of my appointment talking to the Dr. - he said the perio-tray (as suggested by Dr. Boulden) is a gimmick & that bonding (as suggested by Dr. Giesler) is not a good option for me. - $2000 per veneer Dentist #4: Dr. Flax + Saw an endorsement for Dr. Flax in an issue of Sky Magazine while on one of my many business trips so he appears to be well recognized & respected in the cosmetic dentistry world. Of course, I knew this would equal $$$ but I scheduled a consult anyway to see what that amount would actually be. - When I first called to schedule a "smile consultation", the lady started to explain that the whole process would entail 3 separate visits. When I asked if that's the same smile consultation that's listed as being complimentary on the website, she said, "Oh. No, that consult is just to see if you're a good candidate for what you want to do but we won't be able to provide you with any pricing or quotes. The cost for the 3 visits for us to fully evaluate your mouth and provide you with a quote is $360." Umm, maybe this is just me but isn't the whole point of a consultation to help me figure out how much money it would cost for you to get me the results I want? If I ALREADY knew that I wanted to get my teeth done here and was ready to shell out $360, I wouldn't need a consultation. Also, notice how I've already gotten complimentary consults from 3 other dentists so what I'm asking for probably isn't that unreasonable. Despite all this, I scheduled an appointment for the "complimentary" consult. + At 8PM the day before my appointment, Dr. Flax calls me on my cell just to say hello & see what he could do to make my visit more pleasant. This is a nice personal touch, but at the same time, it weirded me out a bit. + As soon as I was greeted in the waiting room by a lady in a suit and given a tour of the office, I knew this place would be the most expensive option out of the 4 places I'm considering. There's no doubt that this practice is one of the most technologically advanced dental offices in Atlanta. - Unlike all the other consults, there was no examination of my teeth or even pictures taken (guess that'll happen with the $360 option), just alot of pointless small talk. - Only 15% of my appointment was actually spent talking to the Dr. - No quotes were given. I realize it's hard to tell me EXACTLY how much I might spend, but can't you even tell me how much ON AVERAGE you charge per veneer?? SUMMARY: Definitely a good doctor with plenty of happy patients. However, I felt like he was too busy to actually care as much about each individual as the other doctors I met. Also, given the technology they have set up in this office and their inability to give me a quote without me paying $360 upfront, I'm going to guess everything is super expensive here (with quality to match I'm assuming). I can be a high maintenance person, with a tendency to expect perfection; in addition to those characteristics, I was also considered a complicated dental case because of some challenging dental issues created by some unfortunate circumstances. As a result, I had to be very particular about whom I chose as my dentist. After interviewing multiple dentists, when I found Dr. Flax, I knew without question I had found not only the most highly skilled and experienced dentist, I found a consummate professional who is absolutely committed to excellence in every aspect of dentistry, as well as patient care. Dr. Flax demonstrated that he is not only dedicated to staying up to date on the latest trends and technologies, he is a perfectionist whom sincerely wants the most perfect outcome possible for every single one of his patients. An added benefit is that Dr. Flax's staff is also unsurpassed in making you feel like you are the only patient that walks through their door. I found the front office staff (Edi, you know I love ya girl) is always so friendly and welcoming, and willing to answer any question you pose in an extremely timely fashion. I also found Dr. Flax to be consistently interested in me as an individual patient, willing to listen to whatever I felt I needed to ask, or mention. Dr. Flax even went out of his way to coordinate care for me with other medical professionals (ENT and oral surgeon), to assure that my outcome was complete, and of highest quality. I found Dr. Flax to be sensitive to and very capable of addressing my concerns regarding pain management. Of note, I had many of the most long and extensive dental procedures performed by Dr. Flax, and never once did the procedure itself or fear of pain scare me in any way, because of the profound trust I so quickly developed in him. After hours, Dr. Flax personally followed-up with my status every time I had an extensive procedure performed, and made himself available whenever needed. I knew I was never on my own in his care. I have had 2 bridges to replace the tooth but was never happy with the appearance of either of them. Simple...To find a dentist who not only has the training, skill level and sheer talent that Dr Flax has,but who is also a genuinely caring person is amazing. Dr Flax is currently the President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry but you never feel intimidated by that. He and his entire staff go above and beyond to try and make you feel welcome and "part of the family'. Dr Flax takes the time to explain things, answer questions and address concerns before he ever starts the actual work. The very first visit, they take the time to get to know you as a person as well as find out what your past dental experiences have been like. Imagine that, treating people as individuals! I Inherited this guy when my dentist of 30 years retired and sold his business. I have never had a worse cleaning. Got home to find very obvious coffee stains between my teeth. I drink less coffee than I used to and have never come out of a cleaning with heavy staining still between my teeth. Both the hygienist and Flax could not have missed it On top of that, within the first minute of meeting him, he commented on my size (I'm petite) and somehow used that as a springboard to tell me he drives an expensive car. I am not impressed by a vehicle but what that tells me is he's all about the money and impressing people. And, given the poor cleaning, he certainly doesn't care about my teeth enough to make sure they are clean. Oh, and then I had to call them to resubmit the insurance claim because they didn't bother do the appropriate paperwork needed to update the new office name. read more

After a very bad experience with another dentist, I turned to Dr. Flax and his staff for their help. It was a long road to replacing eight veneers, restoring my gum tissue health and getting my bite under control. However, Dr. Flax was their for me every step of the way. He helped me achieve all that and more - he gave me my smile back. Dr. Flax still calls after every office visit to check on me and he has even made himself available on a Sunday to repair a veneer I had loosened over the few months it took to adjust my bite guard.
