MY NEW FAVORITE PLACE FOR TRAILS. NO QUESTION. And the best part? It is less than an hour from SA. DISCLAIMER: This is a mountain bike trail and I don't ride! That being said. I run and I run a lot of trails between SA and Austin trying to get variety for my ultra marathon training. A friend of mine, who does bike, recommended the place for one of my trail runs, but I was blown away by how great it is. There's almost 30 miles of single track there making for one of the most exciting trail runs I have had since moving to Texas. I ran a good two hours or so and only saw cows, sheep and goats, who were more startled than I was. I saw a few bikers taking off the from parking lot, but they chose the lower loop and I took the upper. There's good elevation gain overall with some rolling hills and some nice sharp turns and quick ups and downs made for the bikes. The trails are well maintained and marked. Kind of hard to get lost even though there are no maps alone the way. I snapped a photo of the map at the pay station ($10 - honor system), but didn't need it. Totally worth the price for the course. I think this will be my new weekend running spot. A little oasis for trail runners outside SA. read more

Best single track I've found within an hour of San Antonio. The trails are in great shape and the riders here are mostly intermediate/advanced so you're not going to see a lot of trail buffoonery. If your board with the Greenway trails and find Government Canyon as uninspiring as I do, then make the trip to Flat Rock Ranch. There is a $10 fee that's well worth it. Stop by Comfort on the way home and enjoy the town and the local cafes. It makes for a great Saturday. read more

This place is a great find. We went out yesterday for the first time, and were so pleased we bought the annual pass. There are loads of trails, pretty well marked, and the trails seem in really good shape. The owners seem very nice, and humble, and just want folks to have a good, safe, time. About our experience: easy to find, ample parking, clean porta-potty with lots of TP, loads of trails to choose from. I loved that we started the first ride by going through an actual cattle pasture, which was pretty funny on one hand, (the cows just watch you go by), but also meaning you had to watch out for land mines. Cows were cool. About the ride: there are some climbs and dips, some water, some rocks, some roots - at least one drop I couldn't do because I'm still new - I think they did a great job for the area. What we didn't get was a nice flowy trail, and no banks - but we didn't do all trails either. We have ridden out east, and I think where we rode before it was just easier to have flowy trails - certainly those places didn't have the Texas rock and dirt situation. This is why I gave it 5 stars - they did a great job with what they have. Compared to Bryson City, NC? Apples and oranges, but hey, we're HERE and need to ride, not NC, right? The place seems really well set up - for camping, for cooking out afterwards, hanging with your friends before heading back to town. We are definitely going again soon, and will try to bring some friends along next time also. Thanks to guys at Gotta Ride Bikes for letting us know about this place! read more

As we all know for the most part Texas is relatively flat but there are some exceptions around the hill country and other areas. FRR is an awesome place to mountain bike, easily the best near San Antonio since its only a 45 min drive from the far north central area of SA and trust me it is worth it. Punishing ascents with very rewarding descents this place has it all from climbs, downhill, drops, switchbacks, rock gardens, and brutal obstacles. There are tons of trails and its easy to find more than 30 miles of trails. The ranch is privately owned and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. There are some cabins for rent if you would like to stay overnight or even a camping area where you can setup and ride then come back have a beer and bbq, sleep under the stars, and ride the next morning. The views can be spectacular from the top, and i would advise you to bring a full camelback with ice specially in the summer. Races are held every once in a while and are awesome to participate or spectate. Call in advance to make sure the park is open since they do close for deer season and when there has been heavy rain. read more
