I had an itch to go look at antiques and stumbled upon this gem. You can tell they put thought into what they put into this store. It's all authentic, antiques! They had a great selection of furniture, kitchen ware, and clothes. I was lucky enough to find the exact same cookie jar my great grandmother had. I think the pricing was also reasonable. I'll be visiting here more often! read more

This place is AMAZING! In fact, I am so completely in love with it that I'm hesitant to even write a review because I don't want people stealing my cherished finds that I snatch up every time I come. My 1959 mint green typewriter is literally my favorite possession right now...yes, I NEED my computer...but I stare at that antique beauty for hours. I also scored an incredible Art Deco decanter with matching glasses, which is now proudly displayed in my dining room and gets comments from EVERYONE who walks in the door. The staff is incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. I can't say enough nice things about this wonderful place. Support local, y'all! read more

Flashback definitely takes the cake in the way of retro/vintage shopping in Memphis. They have a huge selection of vintage clothing and shoes and a pretty fabulous collection of furniture, lamps and chatchkeys from the 40s through the 70s. It is extremely clean and organized, and I particularly like the way they stage everything. Different sections of the store are set up like a living room or kitchen- so you can get an idea of how fab these items would look in your home. If I won the lottery, I would promptly purchase the entire store and decorate my home immediately. There are some wonderful items here- including an authentic boomerang table and flamingo lamp, both of which I would give up my first born child to own. Judging by the pricetags, I would have to. There is no way I could afford to purchase items from this store. The boomerang table was $300 and I spotted a fabulous 70s floral printed melamine serving tray for $50. Who buys a melamine tray for $50?! I thought retro and vintage items in Chicago were pricey, but this place takes the cake. I agree with David M, you could find these exact items on EBay or Craigslist for half the price- even with shipping. I adore you Flashback! When Memphis wants vintage, Memphis goes to Flashback. Seriously, stepping into this place is like stepping back in time. I went shopping with a girlfriend here not so long ago, and she actually found her prom dress, folks! Everything from vintage jeans, retro dresses, hats, scarves, and shoes can be found here as well as kitschy kitchen accessories, furniture, lamps, and glassware. It's definitely fun to windowshop but that's all I've ever done here. Yes, this is a second hand store, but shop with caution. Prices are higher, and by higher I mean WAY higher, than other thrift stores. Happy shopping! read more

Flashback has a pretty big selection of vintage clothing and accessories - on a recent trip, I bought a white Jackie-O style dress and some black reproduction vintage ruffle panties. I've never bought jeans there, but they have a huge selection of vintage Levis. They've also got furniture, housewares and accessories. I called the store numerous times to offer them some awesome vintage things we got from my late father-in-law. Although they claim to be interested and acquire vintage things from people they were very vague, not helpful , and seemed pretty indifferent as far as looking at items. It took about 4 weeks for me to get a response. I had been a customer there a couple of times and was not impressed by the staff although maybe there are new people there now. The inventory was fun to look at. That's pretty much it. Not trying to be negative just not impressed with the lack of people skills. Further more, they are trying to make me feel bad about my one star review. After being vague and not giving accurate information and stringing me along for a month by telling me" call the buyer back in two days" , then " call back in another week" then " maybe next week". I couldn't possibly know that a) the buyer is the owner and b) the owner was having family issues?? How would I possibly know that!? So , you frustrate people then try and make them feel bad when all along you held the info that would solve the problem. You had personal information I could not possibly know and therefore all you had to do was say "owner/ buyer not available for awhile. " Problem averted. Good communication is a good thing. When you knowingly frustrate a customer and know information they don't , then try and make them feel bad because they got frustrated , that is not ethical and it's actually calculated. It's ok though; I sold our stuff on EBAY for way more than I probably would have gotten anyway . I was just trying to support my local businesses. I am sorry for the owner's loss , we are also suffering same loss. So, the kindness you spoke of is a two way street. You don't know what people are going through or what has happened. So, good communication and people skills are essential in awkward times. I was kind to you every time I called. You were not being kind to me. I would not have gotten frustrated had you been honest with me and just told me to wait a month. I didn't really understand why you kept telling me to call back. Telling a customer to keep calling back without them knowing why is frustrating. I think you would know that. read more

I love going here each time I'm at midtown because of the array of vintage finds from typewriters to clothes. I always take people new in town to this store to get a feel for Memphis and the cool shops they can find. The staff is very nice and helpful ! read more

I stopped shopping here after a decade, when I had to deal with blatant, rude "customer service" by one older lady who treated me as if she really didn't care to sell anything to me. Dismissive, bored, and condescending would sum her up in three words. This kind of shop was fun years ago, but anybody can find better priced items online now. Considering the fact that there are few places in town to buy retro clothes and home decor, this place is pretty much your best bet for all things vintage. The store has a mix of old and new items, but like David said, it is pricey! Whenever I'm back in town I find myself here perusing the pillows, furniture, cute kitchen accessories, and clothing items. I usually find something there that makes a great gift for someone back home in Atlanta. read more

Had one day in Memphis and decided to explore the Cooper Young area. Flashback was a spot that showed up on numerous searches for vintage, so we had to check it out. So glad we did. The store is like a well curated department store from another time. Everything is clean and organized. Not a dusty flea market at all! All of the clothing was in impeccable, wearable condition and I only wish the high waisted jeans I tried on were a size bigger. Great spot for a little gift or a great fashion find for yourself. This is for the lover of all things retro. I was drawn in, as usual, by the lighted sign on the outside, and was kind of stunned by how much stuff was crammed into the store. Nicely displayed, of course. The shop owner obviously takes pride in finding some of the harder to find retro items, many of the would make great conversation pieces. I spotted an old milkshake blender that I'd love for my counter top. Who doesn't need a porcelain fiftes-style teddy bear alarm clock? Also spotted were genie lamps and those plastic pink yard flamingos. The place is a riot. read more

This place is the perfect spot to find vintage clothing, neat knick knacks, accessories and vintage housewares. I love coming here and browsing their selection of neatly organized goods. If you're looking for a unique gift for someone special you can find it here! Custom flasks, local art, beautiful swing dresses at great prices, quirky magnets and coasters... You name it! The owners are very friendly and do well in employing staff members that display the same helpful attitude. Flashback is truly one of Midtown Memphis's rare gifts. The owners of the shop are front and center showcasing their delightful vintage finds. They know their products and it enthusiastically shines through. They can always be counted on for exceptional 1950's glassware and unique period ashtrays. They have stunning quintessential 60's lamps, unique furnishings, bitchin' gifts and collectibles and even fabulous retro clothing. My husband recently found a perfectly fitting Halston suede jacket for $45.00. I've seen the most beautiful, classic Mad Men bars, art nouveau desks and lounge chairs with fantastic fabric. Most recently I bought a solid shelving unit for my den. I've seen vintage stereo player/furniture contraptions, and fun banquette seating options along with sensational nesting tables in perfect condition. They always have great serving pieces from bygone eras whether your looking for a funny Art Deco paella dish or a more recent 70's Fondue set. I found a velvet cape several years ago from the 50's that I continue to wear every chance I get. They also have great gifts from funny cards to unique conversation starters. There are always things to enjoy at Flashback including their nutty window displays which are the best in town. I am always so happy that they continue to bring their fun to Midtown Memphis. Anyone with access to eBay can find most of the items in this store, with a little looking and often considerably less expensive. Same goes for clothes: a visit to the better thrift stores will yield vintage threads at a fraction of the cost you'd pay here. With what you save, you'll be able to dry clean what you find and/or pay for alterations. read more

The selection is so-so, the price for not-so great items tend to run high, and the staff is somewhat rude and bothered by your presence if you're not one of their buddies passing through. I could list off places in the area you could find real gems and deals for vintage/thrift items, but if you are a UofM student or a suburbanite not patient enough to sift through racks or spend time on Ebay, this will do just nicely. read more

listen, i am a total freak when it comes to all things vintage and mid-century, and flashback totally has it going on! i was constantly saying, "OH MY GOD!!!" and "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THIS!!!!!" and "HOLY CRAP!!" - their selection is truly unbelievable. contrary to all of the "pricey" comments, i thought that just about everything here was pretty fairly priced at what it's worth. it's very hard to find barware sets, dish sets, amazing fiberglass shade lamps, heywood wakefield furniture, etc in the near MINT condition that flashback sells it! i bought a pair of very kick-ass lamps here in addition to some other things. the owner even gave my husband and our friends a ride back to our car in cooper young so we could properly pack up our stuff and get out on the road. i really thought the owners were amazing... so incredibly sweet and really knowledgable. if i lived in memphis, i'd be a (broke) regular. can't wait to come back. read more

Call me thrilled. Last Saturday, I decided I wanted a vintage manual typewriter ASAP. A friend said try Flashback, thank goodness. Gene had about five different models in top shape, and my daughter and I fell in LOVE with a 1967 Olympia SM9, made in Germany, with CURSIVE script. What a find! We put it in the kitchen and have been typing on it to each other all week. Between the three of us in the house, we have typed pages and pages, and in doing so conclude that this typewriter, more than 45 years old, is in perfect condition; clean, fast, easy to use! Thank you, Flashback, for doing a great job rehab-ing this fabulous machine. Overnight family heirloom. There will be a huge fight over who takes this to college. read more

I love little places like this. Me and a friend of mine went by here to get some clothing for a party at our school. The clothing didn't really fit me. Most of the stuff I was looking for was a bit too small, but I still love this place. It's littered completely with awesomeness. It has so many small items that no one can find anywhere anymore like fishnet tights... or if they can, its at special stores in the mall. This place makes me doubly happy because its cool enough to have its own mini-cooper. I think I've found a new favorite thrift store. read more

This place makes me so happy. I could spend hours in here and not get bored. They have a great selection of clothes, shoes, accessories, housewares, and tchotchkes, and the store itself is staged so beautifully. It's a little pricey, so I've never been able to go all-out and buy everything I want. I've mainly picked up a few little items, but it's definitely worth your time and money to visit Flashback. I assumed that the staff would be a little snobbish, but they've been really friendly every time I've been. A friend and I even came in about a half hour before closing time on a Saturday (and felt really bad about it, honestly), but the guy working was really nice and helpful and didn't give us any bitchy, impatient vibes.
