This month of August, Flame Broiler has been celebrating its 30th anniversary by offering rewards members a deal each week of the month. I redeemed the first two weeks' deals at the location *on* Lakewood, which I must specify^ is in Long Beach. For this third week, I redeemed the offer at the Flame Broiler *in* Lakewood. Notice how I inserted asterisks about each preposition before "Lakewood"? Don't get them confused, especially since the two locations are quite different despite being quite close to each other. The Lakewood Flame Broiler recently updated their front signage so it looks more modern and appealing than the quaint signage of yesteryear. Hopefully, that has attracted more customers, and hopefully, that is a sign of an upgrade at this Flame Broiler. Upgrade in one regard, but a downgrade in another, unfortunately. The Week 3 offer was 30% off a chicken or tofu bowl during Happy Hour, which is from 2 to 5 PM. I made it to this location at about 4:30 PM on Thursday, and right before I entered, I noticed a sign by the front door advertising their Happy Hour special of a free 20 oz beverage with purchase of any bowl or plate; this special was valid all day on weekends, but only from 2 to 5 PM on weekdays. And it just so happened to coincide with that other Happy Hour deal! So could I get both Happy Hour deals simultaneously?! When I entered, there were just a couple of customers inside eating at a table by the right wall. There wasn't any employee at the front, but once she saw me come in, Jackeline came out to take my order. I told her I was intending to use the 30% off Happy Hour deal from the 30th anniversary month long promo, but asked if I could also get the free drink since I was planning to get a chicken bowl. After Jackeline applied my reward at the register, she was able to ring up the free drink for me. Yay! She was also happy enough to offer me each of their five sauces, which would have normally incurred an upcharge at other locations, but not here! I asked her how long I'd have to wait, and she said less than 5 minutes. No joke, by the time I filled my cup and inserted the straw, she told me my order was ready! Loved how quick it was! But I didn't love how the sweet sesame dressing cup had opened while I was driving home, so when I opened my takeout bag, it was a mess inside! If they had taken an extra 5 seconds to properly secure their sauce cups, I would have been more satisfied. Same with the lid of the bowl; the tab of the lid wasn't lined up with the bowl, so it made opening the lid of the bowl more difficult than it should have been. Nevertheless, the bowl tasted good, especially with the other four sauces I was given. I didn't like how the chicken was dried out, but perhaps that is the norm here at Flame Broiler, especially when you order to go. Luckily, with the abundance of sauces you can get at Flame Broiler, you can easily forget about how dry that chicken is and enjoy the rest of the bowl! I thought Jackeline's service was pretty good when she was ringing me up. About as good as Jennifer from my initial review. I had not seen the sweet sesame dressing before, but she was gracious enough to show me a sample while explaining that it was more of a salad dressing. Kind of odd, but that's because Flame Broiler recently added a salad to their menu: Chicken Avocado Salad. From what I could tell, the sweet sesame dressing had a liquid texture closer to that of a vinaigrette, but creamier. Unfortunately, since that sauce had spilled inside my bag, I didn't get a chance to try it. Next time, hopefully? Also, please note the (non-30th anniversary) Happy Hour deal varies from location to location. At the Long Beach location I went to previously, the Happy Hour deal was a chicken bowl and a 20 oz drink for $9.99, which is kind of similar, but not quite the same. Overall, I still recommend patronizing this Flame Broiler in Lakewood. If they take the extra time to carefully secure the lids onto the bowls and sauce cups, I'm sure they could earn 5 stars from anyone else. For now, I'm leaving this rating as 4 stars. ^ I had to specify because there are also two Flame Broiler locations on Lakewood in the City of Downey. Try not to get them all confused! lol read more

Since the remodeling and the change of management, everything has improved. The decor is modern and elegant, and the dining area seems more spacious. The food is served faster, but it tastes better! The service is a huge upgrade from before--more attentive, more courteous. I ordered takeout today at the Lakewood location, and I saw the owner himself taking photos of the remodeled store. I have been coming here for years and never have I waited as long as I did today. The slow pace. The lack of urgency by the cook. Just terrible. I have been to Flame Broilers all around SoCal and this has to be my worst experience of all of them. You come here for a fast, healthy meal. Instead I got a nonchalant service. Not to add the 7-9 people that came in after me who are still waiting. The prices are stupid expensive for what it is nowadays and to have to wait in excess of 15 minutes for this is ridiculous. I was in the area and needed a quick take-out order. This was actually my first time ever at a Flame Broiler restaurant and I didn't know what to expect. In the end, they give you options on the size of the order, the base (rice or brown rice), choice of meat, and limited options of vegetables, so I just went with the basic choices. Because of COVID, everything was bare empty as most other restaurants. The server/cashier was decent but since it was my first time, it took a while for me to decide and look around the menu. I knew she just wanted me to place the order and for me to leave. What really disappointed me was the quality of the food. I ordered the plate size with brown rice, chicken, and vegetables. I'm not sure if it's a good thing that the grilled chicken tasted like burnt charcoal and masked the rotten-ness of the vegetables. The veggies looked and tasted as if it were a couple of days old, laying out there at room temperature. The serving size was decent but to get the most out of your money; I asked and realized that you could replace the vegetables/fruit servings with more rice (in case you need to be extra full). The cost was around $11 for that one plate and for something that I had to throw away half of because of the expired vegetables. This will be my first and last time at any Flame Broiler. I've been to so many Flame Broiler locations, sometimes they can be a hit or miss, just depends on who is back there cooking the food. This one is located in Lakewood close to the gym I go to, making it very convenient to get a healthy-ish meal in after. I gotta say, this one is one of the better ones near Long Beach - the chicken is always cooked just right! Compared to other locations, sometimes the chicken isn't marinated enough or is burnt, or the portion of the chicken is too small. I've dined at other flame broilers before and I really don't know why I keep coming back to this place? lol. I suppose it's the fact that it's supposed to be a healthier option to fast food? In a nutshell: Meat-on-rice bowl style eating next to a Togo's and Five Guys across from Lakewood Center Mall. I've eaten Flame Broiler before, an it's not bad. I'd equate it to Yoshinoya because the dishes are similar: chicken or beef (and now angus steak) on top of rice with veggies or no veggies. However the main differences are that the bowls are smaller, you can get brown rice, and the meat quality is better, or at least it tastes better. My only gripe: NO SPOONS!!! I was in Filipino American dining hell!! I digress... Parking 4/5 Plenty in this strip mall. Ambience 4/5 Well lit and very clean. Lots of open space between the register and the tables to allow for a line and carry out orders. Two stations for utensils and sauce...smart. Wait time 5/5 Food comes out fast. I phoned in my order, very polite person took the order. I picked it up within 15 minutes and had my dog in the car with the car running (air conditioning. I stayed in front of my car at their front door), I asked the young man at the counter, from the door way, if my order was ready because I cant leave my dog, he said yes he was just finishing it up. I stayed in front of my car and he brought the food out to me. He was wearing gloves and mask and very nice. Cashiers dont handle the food, but they do handle the money. I want to start off that main reason I am giving this place a 5 Star is because of consistency. Laura is always there when I go and place my order. She is extremely efficient and on point in her job role. She does not waste a single second of downtime. She wipes down the tables right as soon as a guest is finished with their meal and walks out. Best of all, she is always welcoming and wears a great smile. I respect her for her amazing quality work. Next is the speed , quality and portions of my food. The cooks do an amazing job in providing my meal as soon as possible. Even on a busy hour like lunch time. I usually don't have to wait over 1-2 minutes to receive my order (usually a half & half mini bowl). My feedback is for the restaurant itself; it is not as updated as the new Flame Broiler's that I have seen , but still maintains quality by having great employees. Flame Broiler is my go-to place when I'm craving something healthy and simple. I always get the medium bowl, half chicken and half beef with mixed vegetables. It's enough for two meals for me! The meat is teriyaki flavored and the veggies are plain- add some of their magic sauce and teriyaki sauce they offer on the side though and everything is 20x more tasty!! Their magic sauce is great. The food was made quick however, I saw the workers were not taking precaution for the virus. For example, none of the employees wore gloves including the cashier who handled money. The cashier who handled money then proceeded to handle the food without washing their hands or even sanitizing. By handling food i mean topping it off and putting a cap on the bowl. They also put in utensils and such in the bag all without any form of sanitation. This is a violation because they should not be handling both food and money without wash or sanitation in between. They handled the money of multiple customers and touched the food of each customer. This store needs to take more precautions not only for their customers but for their employees as well. The employees should all wear gloves whether handling money or food for their own health protection. read more
