The food is amazing! The yogurt bowl is delicious. Service was quick and friendly. The place is always crowded but finding a table is not hard. There is a public parking nearby as well, so parking is not an issue either. This place is ideal for having something real quick as well as tasty for breakfast :) read more

Everything we ordered here was so good! We got the croissan-wich jones, the bacon burrito, and açaí bowl. The burrito and the croissant sandwich aren't too big, which had me wanting second servings LOL. The açaí bowl with berries is a MUST!!! I think it's one of her best açaí bowls I've ever had... Overall, it's a very delicious place.. would be perfect, 5 stars, if only they had a bathroom! read more

Flake - A truly amazing joint on the corner of Rose and Rennie avenue. Make sure to come in early, the seating is limited and the lines are crazy long. I had a delicious bacon burrito with avocado slices added. Every bite was like heaven from what I can remember. I went on and on about how great my burrito was, to the point my mates literary told me to shut up. I wash down my delicious burrito with a perfectly made Flat White - very creamy and strong - just the way I like it. The service was beyond great - Super friendly and helpful. Delicious food. I give a 4 star because portions are a bit too small for the amount of money I am paying. I ordered the Fatty with bacon and an everything bagel. The special sauce was delightful, the bagel tasted fresh, the sandwich as a whole was delicious and not too salty. But I found myself craving a second! read more

Some of my friends were in town, and I was super excited to take them to a hipster brunch place. I picked Flake after reading the rave reviews. We came at an incredibly lucky time: When we were driving by it, looking for parking, there was a long queue spilling over to the walkway. By the time we found parking and walked back to Flake, the line has shortened to just a couple parties before us. When we were leaving, the queue was once again long sinuous. There's also just a handful of seating spots -- we got lucky on that aspect as well. I got a Croissan-wich Jones, which is eggs+bacon+cheese in a croissant, and a Nutty Munkee, which is peanut butter+banana+nutella in an English muffin. I loved the Nutty Munkee (Nutellaaaaaaa!!!), but I would pass on the Croissan-wich Jones. The items on their menu are pretty ordinary. I was hoping to find some combination of ingredients I had never tried before, but that wasn't there. So, I'm not sure why this place is labeled 'hipster'. Is it because how they name their items? Absolutely delicious. The food tastes so fresh and is very reasonably priced for the area. I'm used to paying 25 bucks at places like Gjusta and Cafe Gratitude - everything in the area is so pricey. Their breakfast options are excellent. And, their iced coffee is pretty darn good. I can't wait to go back! read more

I LOVE LOCAL small old school spots like this. Great breakfast and lunch options. Really good croissant sandwiches and coffee (that is what I had). Don't forget the oh soooo coool "make your own cereal bowl" option with like 20 cereals and many toppings to choose from. Friendly customer service. Dine in or take out. My visits to California include seeing my tribe, soaking up sunshine and seeking out Acai bowls. On the evening before I was set to jet back to Chicago, I opened up my Yelp app and searched for a farewell Acai bowl to eat on the way to the airport. Yelp steered me to Flake in Venice. It is in a neighborhood like setting and it is on a corner with a couple tables for outdoor seating. The menu is small and you order at the counter. We went with an Acai bowl with berries and a Super Cro-Jo (based on the rave reviews). The actual bowl that the acai was served in was frozen and the icy mixture was more like a sorbet than a smoothie. It was a modest size and we went with berries, bananas and granola. The quality of the fruit toppings were a plus and each bite was the perfect combination of tastes and textures. Cro-Jo was indulgent, but equally delicious. We definitely ended our Acai bowl tour on a high note. Any future SoCal trips will now require a send off from Flake before arriving at LAX. read more

Well done yelpers =] This place is just 1 mile away from my place. ^___^ lucky me. Came here today for an early lunch with a friend. I had the gobbler on croissant and my lunch buddy had the gobbler on whole wheat. We both did it with greens. I had their fresh OJ =] All very yummy! I'm a huge flake fan!!! I would and will come back to try more things on their menu. I did spy an acai bowl on their menu and I'm a sucker for acai bowls... so I may have to try their version. VEGGIE RAD IS BOMB DOT COM! My roommate and I live close by and was looking for a place to grab brunch. I've always seen this place on Yelp and wanted to check it out. My roommate got the veggie rad which was really good! She was kind of reluctant to get it because of the veggie patty but turned out to be delicious! It has fluffy egg whites, a veggie patty & avocados on toasted English muffins! I on the other hand couldn't resist the acai bowl and it was pretty good too. It was a little bit more on the sweet side but was still pretty good! The place is pretty small and quite crowded so make sure you grab a seat once you spot one ! read more

I commuted a long way to try their breakfast burritos. They're OK, alright, they'll only OK. If you consider yourself a breakfast burrito buff, this place is not worth driving any distance greater than 5 minutes. They do have really good açaí bowls though, if perchance you drag your wife alone to all your burrito sleuthing and most of those other places don't offer wife friendly options such as these. So, good brunch spot. read more

The name alone makes it sound like it's THE breakfast spot. I can't believe that I frequented this restaurant for so long and I never reviewed it. VENUE This restaurant is located on the trendy Rose Ave. in Venice. There is limited seating (both indoor and outdoor). There is always so much going on in this neighborhood, so why not grab a seat outside and people watch. Every weekend there is a line out the door to grab a bite here. Parking may be a bit difficult, since it is so close to the beach. There is a paid parking structure across the street at Cafe Gratitude. The decor is old school with classic cereal boxes lining the walls. FOOD I know that the hype here is the build your own cereal bowls. Haven't tried them! What I do love getting is the veggie rad (vegetarians only) with ketchup. It's so hot that by the time that I get to work it's still warm. I've tried their coffee, tea, and juice. All very good. SERVICE The service here is impeccable. Everyone is so nice, efficient, and make sure that you have an exceptional experience. They weave through the crowd, serving, busing, and checking in. Sometimes I order my food, when I'm running late for work. It is out and ready in 10 minutes, just enough time for me to get out of the house and down the street to pick it up. This place is seriously delicious. First, the breakfast sandwich, the croissant one, is actually the breakfast sandwich of my dreams. Like I will be dreaming about it, so amazing. Then the GF banana bread - holy cow. Get it grilled with a side of butter and you will thank me. Seriously the best banana bread I've had GF or otherwise. Tip: If you order online and order coffee they wait to make the coffee when you get there so it is f-r-e-s-h-l-y made! I am a serious a huge fan of Flake. A good go to place when you want a quick breakfast (or are hungover). I've had the bacon breakfast burrito with avocado and the acai bowl. Both are delicious. The burrito makes me feel guilt free, since there are no potatoes. It's also not an overwhelming big size so it's good to eat in one sitting if you can. The acai bowl is great and comes in a Chinese like to go Box. I don't like that you can't see the whole bowl but it helps to keep the bowl colder longer, I think. Can't go wrong with either option, I usually order both! The place is small and gets a line so it's good to get the food to go so you can eat elsewhere. Parking is also rough since it's right on Rose and you'll have to find street parking, on the weekends this area of town gets really busy! read more

This is always a favorite spot for breakfast in Venice when I come to LA. Adore their Acai bowl and outdoor seating. Fill the bowl with junky fruity pebbles and coconut and the whole thing is a refreshing, sweet feast. Also enjoyed the egg-croissant sandwich, though it didn't blow me away. First place we ate at during our Disneyland/LA trip. Wanted a quick bite before heading to Venice beach and I'm glad we came here. I ordered the spinach quiche which was perfect. YES. Just yes. I freaking love this place. If you're on your way to Venice Beach in the morning, swing by Flake for breakfast. I highly recommend their acai bowl, above all. It is amazing. I've never gotten an acai bowl with as much fruit as they give you here. And the everything is at the correct consistency and the granola is also tasty. Just such a perfect way to start your morning. Another menu item I like is the manwich, just a simple yet delicious sandwich. But honestly, all of their menu is great. If you plan to eat there, sitting MIGHT be a problem. But go there anyways, just get your food to go and eat it at the beach :) read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Perfect for a quick breakfast, or a nice little sit down! I always get the super crojo and acai bowl. I promise you can't go wrong with either. The acai bowl actually comes in half size if you can't eat a full bowl! I'm always looking for somewhere I can have both my salty food and my sweet food, and this place is perfect, especially for the morning. I just wished it was closer to me, but happy I've discovered this place because it is my go-to when I'm in Venice! I kid you not, but I dream about the amazing acai bowl. It's a small, cute restaurant on the corner of two streets. It's always packed and every time I've been to it there has been a decently sized line - you'd be lucky to find seats here. It's not that bad to find parking since it's right beside a residential neighbourhood and there is some parking there. You line up first and order at the counter and then you sit down either inside or on the sidewalk. I've had the turkey sausage and bacon breakfast burritos, both of them were tightly packed with egg, cheese and potato if I remember correctly. It came with this green salsa like sauce that added some sweet and spicy flavours to the burritos. Everything was cooked perfectly and it wasn't dry but like cooked just right that it was a bit juicy. They have a pretty large menu so I think they'd have something for everybody! read more

The more expensive the sandwich, the more irritated I get when it instantly turns into soup upon holding it for a bite. I like Gjelina for other items on the menu. Service is good. Location is nice for Venice. But I'll never order a sandwich here again until they toast the bread or use thicker slices to maintain sandwich firmness.

I work 53 steps from the front door of Flake (55 if I have to step over a sleeping Venice "local" or two in the alley). I like to use Flake's free WiFi and comfortable indoor/outdoor seating as a sort of extension to the office. Pretty soon, I'm sure we'll add "Flake" as an actual room you can pick as a meeting place. The satellite radio, indie music, and constant flow of colorful local patronage makes this a fun place to catch a fulfilling bowl of breakfast fare as well as a respectable place to just kick it. I usually order one of the following: 1. Steel-cut Irish Oatmeal w/fresh fruit: The nuttiness of the Irish Oatmeal, coupled with strawberries or blackberries makes me a happy camper. If you're ever in need of a heart-healthy breakfast with plenty of fiber, oatmeal is the ticket. Add crushed walnuts for some crunchy texture and you're off and running... 2. Yogurt bowl/only it's more like a cottage cheese bowl: I'm lobbying for this order to be the "Geoff Bowl" because it's so off the menu, I'm the only one eating it. I order the yogurt bowl with fresh fruit (strawberries/blackberies) only I substitute cottage cheese for yogurt and I ask for them to add granola and blackberries, then top off the whole thing with a generous helping of hunney for the Pooh in me. This works well for lunch, especially if you're looking to eschew the carbs. Try it. Be sure to refer to it as the "Geoff Bowl" 3. Cafe Americano: 2 shots espresso + hot water = heaven. Mmmmmmm. Couple this with item 1 or 2 from above and you're cooking with gas. I find it funny that the knock on this place is the pricing. Both of my orders above usually ring in at around $5. Comparing that with the $10 that I've spent at Starbucks for a coffee + yogurt parfait (not to mention the not-free Wifi) and I'm seeing some serious value... The cereal options are plentiful. The fresh fruit is always leaping at me from behind the counter, and the panini sandwiches look delicious. I can't wait to work my way through the menu options here. The owners are a friendly husband/wife couple that clearly put their hearts into the business. All of the little touches are there from the retro cereal box framed art to the cool satellite radio stations to the constantly updated lunch menu options. I've never been here when I wasn't greeted with a smile and friendly service. This is, plain and simple, a great local Venice spot worth visiting and then re-visiting. read more

This place is cool but I've got mixed feelings about it. I've read the other reviews (the good and the bad) and both have truth to them. Truth: the wait staff is NOT super friendly, but this is Venice Beach so we shouldn't be surprised here. Truth: the cereal bar is kind of overpriced, but I think the main attraction at Flake should be the other dishes, not the cereal. Truth: This place is not good for groups because the location space is TINY. I feel cramped every time I go there, and I have only been there in groups of two. Good luck finding a table. About the price range, it CAN be under ten dollars if you only order one dish, but to me, their dishes were kind of small, so my friend and I decided to order a bunch of different dishes and split them. We ordered five dishes, and it was a little much, but it was a VERY satisfying "little much". But it also cost us $20 each, including juice. Review: The Super Cro-Jo: AWESOME croissant sandwich with eggs and gouda cheese. It comes with bacon but you can have that replaced with a to-die-for veggie sausage patty. It's kind of small though, and it wasn't enough as a meal for a grown adult. The Veggie Rad: Very similar to the Cro-Jo, as it is an egg-white sandwich on English muffin and avocado, but the American cheese they just slopped on it was totally gross. I disapproved, but my friend swore it was even better than the Cro-Jo. This sandwich was even tinier. I don't know how big breakfast is for most people, but this would not suffice alone. The Quiche: A delicious (spinach?) quiche that is small, but satisfying. As it comes with mixed greens (you can order it with fruit, but it goes better with the greens), this meal might actually be enough for one person if you are planning on having a light lunch. Highly recommended. The Fruit Kebabs: It's just fruit with granola and watery yogurt on the side. My friend and I were disappointed as they came in bowls and not on kebabs. The Nutty Munkee: AMAZING AND BRILLIANT IDEA - toasted english muffin, with bananas, peanut butter, and nutella. This is definitely worth it, but now that I'm thinking about it, I probably could have made it at home. Regardless, I still give this place four stars because my friends and I love coming here on a Saturday morning to kick off the weekend. Kudos for the music there! read more

Utterly appalled and so enraged that I'm posting my first review. This place WAS one of my favorite neighborhood spots until yesterday when I was walking by and noticed that their mural on the outside wall was painted by "deadringer". Wondering why it sounded familiar, I googled it and realized it is the same racist POS that made the bat fried rice tee shirts a few months ago!! (check NY Times) Flake, you do realize that at least 30% of your Yelp reviews are posted by Asians, right? I know this mural had been up long before because I have walked/ridden past it a thousand times, but in a time when everyone else is aligning with equality, you are promoting the work of people who choose to further the divide. If that "artist" had designed something targeting any other race, guaranteed you would have painted over it by now. Best cafe within close proximity to my house. More than just cereal. i'm into the veggie-D, and Rad Muffins minus the meat. Nice to have a few vegan and vegetarian options along with great coffee. Besides that, Paige and the crew are extremely friendly. You can bring your dog, listen to good music and dodge the homeless in one fell swoop. I didn't have a problem with that. The water more so a self service situation, which I didn't mind. Lastly, the shining jewel - the burrito. Which, in all truthfulness, was the most disappointing. The reason I'm still giving it three stars is because the flavors within the burrito were bold, and similar to how I remembered it when I last got it. However, one side of the burrito wasn't grilled - leaving the rest of the tortilla ending up rather gummy. Loved the pickled onions. It added such a needed sharp taste to help balance out each bite. Sadly, they didn't offer the little sauce they typically serve this burrito with. Unfortunately, the food was so underwhelming and a downgrade from when I last went that it is now joining my graveyard of spots in LA that simply aren't worth a repeat visit anymore. Heartbreaking conclusion.

Easily one of those dishes where you're already thinking about coming back before you finish your plate. For drinks, I got the Glory Latte and it was perfect. The espresso actually shines through, and it's not overloaded with sweetness like a lot of specialty lattes can be. If you're looking for a simple, well-made latte, this is it. And if you've got more of a sweet tooth, they've got plenty of creative specialty drinks to choose from too. This place feels like it's about to become a local favorite. Definitely a new go-to spot, and I'll be bringing all my homies from the area here soon. Highly recommend.

I ordered an iced matcha, it was ok, nothing too crazy. Parking is street only, but there's plenty of parking on Jefferson, so a short walk before and after a big breakfast was ideal. There was some parking on National but it was a little tight. I recommend going to Jefferson where there are more houses and park there instead and walk to the restaurant.
