The coach was fantastic attentive, encouraging, and great at coaching to all levels in the room. I'm usually an orange theory type but I needed something different. This place has been pretty perfect as I continue to recover. I was pretty intimidated because a lot of places say all levels but don't actually act like it and this is FOR SURE accessible for all levels. I'm new to this level of weight lifting but after going regularly to the 6am class with Zach, I feel so much more confident. It's been helpful to have a coach who provides alternatives so I can focus on recovery while building strength. Every week I'm getting better and stronger. The staff is helpful via emails and text as well. Highly recommend this place. And how can you beat that awesome sunrise by the ballpark . Glad to have this gym in my community.

I originally saw a 6-week challenge ad on Facebook and I thought, hey why not. The main reason and motivator being that I wanted to be in really good shape for my wedding this Fall and all the associated pre-wedding festivities. I saw this as a really great way to launch my fitness journey and kick-start a new me! After a few email exchanges, I worked with Jenn P. to set me up for the 6-weeks. She also took some measurements / pictures and loaded me up with information on how to eat and how to prepare for the challenge with EPIC. I worked hard and showed up to classes 5 days a week and ate according to the meal plan. I really enjoyed the classes and I loved how encouraging all of the instructors were during the challenge. All of the instructors were so friendly and really encouraged me to extend myself a little more or push a little harder and I really think that was key in my workouts. I mean, who doesn't work harder when people are rooting for them? I didn't really lose any weight for this challenge, but it wasn't really my goal to. What i did get was a new-found appreciation for workouts that challenge you and are super fun, but don't leave you feeling like you've been hit by a bus. I also accomplished two major things during my 6 weeks - being able to complete the traverse down and back again and make it to the top of the rope climb. Feeling super positive about what is to come in the next 6 weeks of my fitness journey, but I can tell you that this is the lowest body fat percentage I've been at in a WHILE! :)

She was so friendly and welcoming from the get go. I knew it was going to be a fun one! My favorite thing about Epic is that no class is the same. This was super high energy and cardio focused with eight rounds we did FIVE times. I was sore for days! It's only 45 minutes including the warmup and cool down, but you really get a ton out of it. The studio itself is smaller than the one I'm used to but there were about eight people that came and room for everyone to move about. It also felt very clean and I appreciated Dan mopping up our sweat as things went along. I would definitely come back the next time I'm in San Francisco and would encourage anyone looking for a fun and new workout to give it a try!

I used to run competitively outdoors, so running inside on a treadmill doesn't hit the same. Still I gave it a chance and am quite glad I did. I joined for a 9:30 AM Saturday full body upper body focus class, and it was super energizing. With rapid spring and strength sets synced to a pulsing, high-octane playlist, the workout started my weekend on a high note. Aside from the workout, what facilities I saw and used were clean and odor-free. Staff were polite but a bit rushed. The layout of the room the class I took was held in was a bit confusing to navigate in the dim lighting. They do have a reference map at the check-in desk, so it's definitely a good idea to arrive early and review it first if it's your first time here.

Unfortunately, I didn't really feel that safe going back to a bigger gym that were questionably spaced out. I walked by United Barbell a few times before I actually felt really comfortable with their safety precautions and got myself back in class. In my previous review, I took away one star because I really felt like all the people were very experienced and the instructors didn't cater to newbies like me. I will take it all back now because I've now taken classes with Olivia, Kristie and Brian..and they were all seriously fantastic about walking me through the movements and giving me really great feedback/input. Maybe it is because the classes are smaller? or maybe it is because I tell them upfront that I have no idea what I'm doing and need a refresher? Either way, it's working and I feel like I'm getting the right level of support and guidance to do the workouts safely. I have really truly been enjoying the workouts here. Better yet, you are able to see the workouts on the SugarWOD app (it's free!) when you add United Barbell as a community. I've been getting weekly personal training sessions with James Coca for a little over a year now…read moreand it's been a really worthwhile experience. I went in with some lingering injuries to my lower back and right shoulder, so James started me out the first month or two slowly with a focus on strengthening those areas before advancing to heavier weights and exercises. My primary goal was to gain strength and some muscle, but I also wanted to do some tailored strength training for my tennis game, and James diligently created and continually customized workouts each week to help me progress in those areas. He also has a great personality, which makes the training sessions fun and something to look forward to each week. As part of the personal training package, I also have access to free group classes and testing (DEXA scans, VO2 Max tests), and I've really enjoyed the Tuesday Hyrox class with Donovan and the Sunday Circuits class with Elijah. I've also now gotten two DEXA scans (9 months apart), which has shown that I've increased my muscle mass by 5 pounds while lowering my body fat percentage. In addition to seeing myself lift heavier weights over time, it's also great to be able to quantify the change in body composition as well. Overall, it's not cheap, but with the targeted training and extra access to group classes and perks, it feels like great value for the cost. I've never had a personal trainer before, and I'm glad I started last year even if it meant cutting down on expenses elsewhere - it's increased my accountability to my health goals, and that feels like a great investment!
