This year after the show, our car battery died and we were stuck in the parking lot. Without asking, the staff at the theatre volunteered if they could help as well as at least four cars. Not something I am used to where I come from. Looking forward to the 2014 season.

I only knew of it because it's on a list of reciprocal museums (free admission thru our membership at the Frist in Nashville) but we couldn't have been more impressed and delighted. This is Kennebunk's historical museum, housed in and around a beautiful brick building dating to the early 1800s and founded in 1936 by a descendant of the building's wealthy owner (Edith Cleaves Barry) who was herself an artist. Many of the items on display (china, furniture, clothing, oil portraits, captains's logs, etc) belonged to her; others were donated or loaned by locals. Everything was nicely identified and documented, and somebody on the curator staff clearly loves providing context (you go into the restroom and the walls are full of placards explaining the history of sanitation systems!) Paul's favorite exhibit was about the evolution and quirks of etiquette--there were beaver hats and tea sets and a tiny handbook of George Washington's "Rules of Civility and Decorum. Mom and cousin really enjoyed "The Fires of 1947," as they lived through that time and remember it well. The exhibit included front pages of newspapers from across the state, as well as many photos that I would bet have never been displayed elsewhere. We all liked the furnished bedroom on the second floor, with the model ships and oil portraits and spinet piano and a cutout in the ceiling that reveals the cutlass used during the building's industrial past to haul up goods from the first floor. Bit my personal favorite was the fairy tales exhibit--two rooms filled with excerpts/summaries of several dozen fairy/folktales, illustrated in part by period items from the museum's collections, but mostly by artworks produced specifically for this exhibit by dozens of volunteer, mostly local artists. This is what I loved best--not just the community aspect of it and the sweet sense of whimsy and affection, but also the variety and quality of the pieces--there were mostly paintings but also some metal and pottery and textile and mixed media pieces. Some were for sale--I was bummed that "Baby Bear" (Goldilocks and the Three Bears) had already sold. I comforted myself by buying a gorgeous red felted cardinal in the gift shop, which appears to feature only local artisans. This place is a treasure in every sense. And admission is a bargain, even without reciprocity. We will definitely return.

Walking in I immediately started looking around and found that it sells beautiful and unique art/home decor. One of my favorite items while in there were the coasters they sold... some of them made me actually laugh out loud in the store, and a few of the items actually reminded me of people I know. Check out those pictures. I was going to buy from this store, but my family wanted to check out some places first. There was this on item I totally forgot to come back for which was this beautiful painted box to store cat treats and food, sigh I completely regret missing out on buying it. It was at the now defunct Damariscotta Performing Arts Center, housed in a converted barn still faintly redolent of pigeons. We learned about the performance on a now defunct local radio station, WAVX and bought tickets. It was a rainy night and we had a short drive back to the B&B where we were staying in Wiscasset. The concert was wonderful and we bought all 5 of his CDs, which we continue to enjoy. We are planning a trip back to Maine the end of August. Today I received an email from Paul Sullivan about summer concerts he will be performing. The final one will be September 6th, in Ogunquit, where we will be staying. We were due to leave Ogunquit that day for Rockport, but have rearranged our schedule so we can attend the concert that night and move to Rockport the next day. I bought a couple of tickets online via the Ogunquit Performing Arts website. The process was easy and prices were extremely reasonable. We are looking forward to this treat.

There's a huge carpet in the middle of the room (at least with the current setup) but I can see how artificial walls could easily be brought in to make even more wall space. Having said that, it would also be a great space for sculptures. The woman working at the desk seemed very friendly, though I did not take the opportunity to chat with her much. I do feel like it's a bit of shame it's in the middle of a strip mall next to Shaw's, but we can't all land primo real estate I guess. Having said that, it's a perfect opportunity to drop by once every couple weeks before/after your grocery shopping. I believe I will do this in the future!

Their framing services are top notch, but it's the art I go for. I make a point of visiting the galleries regularly. The shows change about once a month and even when I don't want to take any piece home, I do find the work intriguing.

Away from super-busy Shore Rd, Jack Duford's Hutchins House Arts is located on the opposite end in Perkins Cove. My husband is a Navy man so he was all smieyes when he first noticed the Maritime items and model boats by the window on our way to breakfast a few feet away. Not only will you find Jack Duford's own simple yet stunning seascape and spectacular sailing photographs here, but there's also a local artist collective who share the same Maritime passion, showcase their paintings and sell some home related items also under one roof. The photographs and fine art images here are unique. Service was great from Jack and was kind to bubble-wrap the frames my husband picked out for my two sisters. Paying $100 for both frames may seem like a lot, but whether they're for us or my sisters in this case, the images will last a lifetime.
