Fun-O-Rama is classic amusement arcade that opened in York, Maine in the 1960s. The building located right on Short Sands Beach originally operated as a bathhouse in the 1940s and then a rollerskating rink before pinball machines began to appear in the 1950s. By the 1960s, the building was converted into a full-blown amusement arcade. Over 250 games can be found at Fun-O-Rama, both classic and modern alike. Since 2001, the owner of the arcade has been Robert Lago of New Hampshire-based Grape Hill Associates LLC. The arcade operates seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. My family and I visited Fun-O-Rama this summer while we were spending the week in York. It was our first day in town, and after exploring the Short Sands Beach area we wandered into the arcade. Both of my young sons are obsessed with arcades, so they were very excited. Fun-O-Rama has a nice mixture of various types of arcade amusements, both classic and modern. In addition to the classic arcade cabinets of the 1980s, there were also pinball machines, skee-ball, air hockey, arcade basketball, arcade bowling, kiddie rides, a fortune teller machine, driving games, and shooter games. The place (and the games) seemed well-loved; countless hands had used those joysticks over the last several decades. We only stayed for a little while, as it was getting late, but my sons both had a fun visit. I come here every time I visit York. It's refreshing that's it's vintage and never changes, but that can be a bad thing when it's not maintained. Old and vintage games, but when multiple games are out of order or steal your money it's not so cool. Out of order games are not labeled or how much it costs to play each game. Old school real quarter play with no stupid game cards. A lot of staff standing around. Service is not too friendly. We'll see what we get for about 600 tickets. These places are a dying breed. It's still worth a visit, especially with kids. read more

My husband went here on vacations as a kid and I've been here with him at least 3-4 times now, it's a blast, especially for people who grew up in the 80s / 90s. A lot of the games are broken, so choose wisely and look before you pop your coins in. Or, you can ask a staff member if it works. They just keep some of the broken games for the nostalgia factor. We've lost coins at times but we've also gotten free games or tickets at times, so it all works out and it's more about the fun than anything. Some of the games do not give tickets and you're just playing for fun - you can tell by looking at the machine beforehand if it gives out tickets. If a game malfunctions and doesn't spit out your tickets, it's pretty easy to get a staff member to fix the game (usually jammed or empty tickets) - and they will make sure you get your tickets. read more

Half the games are out of order, the claw machines are such a joke the claw will drop your win 9 out of 10 times. My family spent about 100$ in less then 1 hour & all together maybe had 300 tickets. 3rd visit this summer same outcome. We wont waste our time or money here anymore. Kids get frustrated they cant even win a .50$ fluorescent neon rubber pig that squeaks (5 or so claw machines are filled with these things been the same since 2021) ! Or how about the mini stuffy filled claw machine, nope you wont win that folks dont get excited!! Old school nostalgia some people say. This place has a good selection of games and has a great location by the water and next to The Goldenrod. Some of the machines could use some refurbishments, and there were a few games down, but what was available here more than outweighed that. Another big plus about this place is that most of the classic non-redemption games only cost a quarter each to play. I got to play some great games here like The Simpsons game, and the machine worked great without any issues. Another game that I grinded here was DDR extreme. I thought that I was going to suck, which I did at the beginning. But I kept getting better and better, which enticed me to play more. Overall, what would elevate this place to a 5 star rating for me in the future would be to have more of the classic games up and running and to make some of the redemption games a little less expensive. But all around, this is a great arcade with a ton of untapped potential. read more

Visited the area on 8/21/22 with my family. My wife uses a wheelchair so the first thing I looked for was an accessible way to get in. So the odd thing is, there is what looks like a fairly new deck that was built on the front of this property, but the only way to access it is via a set of stairs. On one side of the deck it's blocked off to what is basically a sidewalk that runs along the entire road where this is located, which has a ramped end so a chair is able to get up on to the walkway, but if you were to wheel all the way to the end, you'd end up with essentially a wall in your face. So we went around to the rear of the building and they had a small curb size lip to a "ramp".. I use the term ramp very loosely here and then a typical step up doorway threshold. So if you're in a wheelchair by yourself, you will not be able to get in to this arcade. However, I am able to tip back and lift my wife's chair to get around these types of obstacles. Once inside, she was able to wheel around with no real issues. There did not appear to be any restrooms in the facility and if there were, they are almost definitely not wheelchair accessible / ADA compliant bathrooms. I lost at least $2 worth of quarters across the myriad of games I deposited coins in to. I didn't bother bringing it to the attention of the guy behind the desk because he didn't seem overly thrilled to be working there honestly. Overall though, my family and I love Skee Ball and had a good time in a retro / nostalgic kind of way since this is a very dated arcade. read more

Great arcade and staff! Understanding the challenges of running a business on the beach (sand everywhere, salt air, people leaving trash) they do an amazing job. Sure there were some times where a machine ate a quarter or ran out of tickets but the staff was very attentive and actually thanked me for bringing it to their attention, if they don't know about it, they can't fix it. Ticket booth staff even gave my daughter a few extra tickets so she could get a prize she wanted. People complaining about this place are ridiculous and must be really fun at parties! It was fun but almost everything is BROKEN. We spent almost as much time getting help for lost money or no rewards tickets as we did playing the games. We eventually gave up getting help and after a few more broken games left. However, even when cashing out tickets the machine broke and said 'call for help'. We did have fun though and the staff was helpful. They seemed to be aware that non of the games work. Dance dance revolution was pretty awesome! read more

Around half of the machines are broken. We don't call it the Fun-O-Rama, we call it the Broke-O-Rama. The owners should have some respect for their customers and fix the machines. We have been there 3 years in a row and the same broken machines from 2022 are still broken in 2024. read more

Stopped in last Summer and wow, this is an incredible arcade. Lots of fun, vintage games, with that old vintage feel. Very nostalgic. Staff are a great help and very nice. Some people complaining about dirty, but it is on a beach Perfect spot for rainy day at the beach. Kids absolutely loved it. If you're in York, definitely stop there to play a few games. Loved it. I know people come here for nostalgia to play the old ski ball machines. But other than that - don't waste your money. Most games are at least $1 to play. Even more are just broken with either tape on them or they swallow your coins. You might win 2 tickets by playing. Then 15 mins later and $30 between the three kids they were psyched to have 168 tickets between the three of them....go to the prize counter excitedly to find that ONE TOOTSY POP was 60 TICkETS!!! Old school beach arcade. Some super oldies but goodies - video games, pinball, skeet ball. Ticket system that kids can swap for prizes. It's not plush it's on the beach. This is a nice arcade. It's clean for a beach arcade. The only drawback is that there are a lot of games that are not in working order. It would be nice if they could restore the broken games or replace them. There a lot of places to buy refurbished games for a third of the price of new ones. There are also places that can repair the broken games they have in the area. Just a suggestion. More working games means more income. read more

I came here almost every night during my three-day vacation in York Beach!! We liked it better at night because the crowds weren't as intense, but it was still pretty bustling nonetheless. Fun-O-Rama = m a j o r nostalgia vibes. Its spacious interior offered a variety of games. There were classic ones such as Skeeball and DDR and some older machines with games like Ms. Pac-Man. Most games ranged from one to three tokens. We rarely played the ones that required four tokens! We used lots of quarters on Skeeball. We just had so much fun, even though I was pretty bad at it. :- ) A few of the games can be glitchy. Sometimes the machines weren't marked (or visibly marked) as out-of-service, so we wasted a few tokens as a result. There were plenty of staff members to flag down, though! The prize table was pretty standard! They had fun little trinkets and lots of candies to choose from. A lot of the bigger prizes were outdated, but it just made it all the more nostalgic! We won several small plushies, a bunch of temporary tattoos, and a hacky-sack! Yay!!! read more

Had a blast! The sudden influx of nostalgia when I entered this building was invigorating. I spent a ton of money only to give my tickets away. But, old games from when I was a kid to some new FPS games: this place is a blast. People who are complaining that it's dirty... bring hand sanitizer. It's an arcade on the beach. Most of the games worked, there were 2 games out of the 100 or so that said "Out of Order" which is a good ratio in my opinion. Parking is terrible, but that's this area as I've learned. read more

After I played Millipede and was only given 2 lives (and I played TWICE because I like the game so much) I just became aware of how the games are set to rip you off a little at every turn. I'll give it three stars for the fact that my kids had a blast here. My youngest especially loved the Skee-Ball. But...ownership really, REALLY needs to either fix it up or hang it up. The games are in such a sorry state of disrepair that's it's nearly pointless to play. Half the pinball machines were out of commission as well. I've been coming here since even before the advent of video games, when it was a dime to play the driving test game. I was there as a teen, during the glory days of arcades in the 80s. I've seen this place grow and change, and now I'm seeing it deteriorate. There's no good reason not to renovate and get it going again. The place is packed with people every day of the week during the summer. And console games and pinball are making a comeback in most major cities. This is a sad missed opportunity. read more

I was HIGHLY disappointed in the Fun O Rama. After looking forward to taking my step-daughter to play Skee Ball for the first time, I was chagrined to learn that the about half of the Skee Ball Machines were not properly keeping score, thereby depriving her of some hard-earned tickets. I shudder to think that this may actually be a plow on the part of the Fun O Rama's owners into saving themselves having to hand out some rubber balls and tootsie rolls as prizes. In addition, I lost several quarters in the pin ball machines and various games. When speaking to staff, they shrugged their shoulders and did not seem at all concerned. The equipment is in such poor repair, that I canceled a trip to go there a second day. Again, I'm not sure if it was the equipment, or a despicable plow to save on tickets, but I hope they get their act together before we vacation their next year. read more

What is a trip to short sands beach without some skee-ball at Fun O Rama? This place is sick with arcade games, I was a kid in the 70's and some of the stuff there just blew my mind. OK I was more of an early 80's arcade kid but still, they have some weird stuff here I never ever saw. My favorite was the punching bag game, I'm no Mike Tyson but I did OK. I think this place is staffed by local high school kids, so don't get down on them if the 1981 Asteroids their parents played isn't working right. read more

There are many games broken which I could've looked past but what I can't stand is poor customer service. The woman behind the counter was miserable. I saw her be extremely rude to several people who claimed the machine ate their money and the final straw was when my friend went up to see if someone turned in her sons 2200 ticket receipt. The woman waited for my friend to walk away and then went on for five minutes about her being a liar and not deserving any help with the tickets and so on and so on. When my friend returned w the ticket I asked to speak to a manager who was not anymore helpful. I know nothing will happen from this incident but it's poor business practice to treat paying customers like this. I feel like this lady knows she can get away with this behavior because people will visit this arcade since it's the only one on the beach but I just hope the owners see this and realize the type of people working for them. read more

Arcades.. I love them. This one was a little bit (almost too) old school so it felt like you were walking around in 1989. Time warp aside.. I loved that there are about 8 pinball machines all together to play with at only 50c a pop! Dirty Rama - This arcade is underly disgusting. My son was so excited, unfortunately a majority of the games were broken and very dirty. Prizes were junk. We left disappointed. This is to bad this has been let to rot because it's in really great location. read more

Fun-O-Rama is always a fun hangout spot at Short Sands Beach in the summer. The atmosphere can get a bit loud, but that's normal for an arcade. They are closed during the winter, as are most businesses on York's beaches. (But not all, so keep your eye out for those gems that stay open year-round). read more

This place is awesome! If you like interesting locations and vintage feel this is it! No shoes, sand on the floor and all the 80's games. Qbert and amazing pinball selection plus 25cent ski-ball. Apparently it used to be a skating rink and the ski-ball machines date nearly back to WWII. Totally cool, highly recommended. read more

Had to make my yearly stop at fun o rama and play some skee-ball. This place has so many memories for me, and I love going back there. Wish they had more stand up arcade games and fewer of the huge driving ones that take up tons of space. Also - their pinball selection isn't what it used to be, but still decent. Worst place ever. I have 4 little kids and most machines were broken, not working properly or just taking the money and not doing anything. The place is run down and dirty. Grown men at the prize counter didn't give the kids the correct amount of stuff because they couldn't add quick enough in their heads.
