What a delightful movie theatre! We caught a screening of Jaws (50th anniversary edition) and it…read morewas a great experience. They even had a Lego version of the shark popping out of the water on the concessions counter! Very charming. The seats were comfortable enough (although perhaps a bit narrow) and there were no bad views. I love that there's a balcony! The staff was super friendly and they had a great selection of concessions. The popcorn was fresh and really reasonably priced. It's a great part of the community: they host live events, screen local films, and offer screenings like Jaws. They have a movie-themed cafe next door to boot. I'd absolutely be a regular if I were local. There's no assigned seating for movie screenings, so you may want to arrive early if it's a popular showing.

You can find the Strand Theatre at 345 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841 pretty much in the heart of…read moredowntown, slightly south of the center of Main. The theater still has the original marquee and is lit up when active so it's easy to spot. There's parking out front and in several lots a block or so away - we didn't have any issues with finding a spot. Also, parking appears to be free after 6:00 PM (otherwise there's a 2 hour limit). We were visiting friends in coastal main and after a full day of hiking, visiting lighthouses and dinner at a local seafood joint, we decided to hit the Barbie movie at the Strand. Adult tickets were $9 which were super reasonable (in Atlanta it would have been $16, to provide a comparison). There's a ticket boot at the front to one side of the entry door and someone to tear and return the stub just inside. This is a surviving classic old theater - something you rarely see these days and from the programming appears to be quite active, both for running movie productions and for local use. It has a wonderful interior with lots of wood and a full balcony (if you haven't experienced balcony seating it's something to try - that's where we sat). Concessions were reasonable and both the theater and perhaps more importantly, the restrooms (in the basement) were very clean and well maintained. We had a great time with Barbie. The concessions were reasonable and the staff excellent - you could tell that they took great pride in the theater.

The recliner seating was comfortable and the attacked tables were cool. The theater was at a comfortable temperature and the feature volume was perfect for the show!

I can confirm that most of what's in the bad reviews is correct. Except the poor service part. The people working were not the issue. I think the people going there must be absolute pigs. I won't describe what I saw in the bathroom but no one making less than minimum wage should have to clean that. Also when coming out of the movie and at least two of the aisles, it looked like someone had spilled half a bucket of large popcorn. Now I understand, dropping a few kernels here and there, but this appeared like someone just dumped it. The actual theater is pretty bad. I guess I totally forgot that theaters used to be flat. It just doesn't make sense. You've got the screen 10 feet off the ground and you're also sitting eye level with the black curtain underneath it. The sound was not surrounding us. It would suck if theaters were still set up this way. In fact, with the way, people's home theater systems are now I doubt anyone would even go to the movies if it was like this everywhere. Chairs are reclining but not very comfortable. Anyway I don't live here so I'll never be here again.
