Today was my first time in FKN, and I am SO glad I finally made it in! We've been wanting to check it out for some time, especially because we are health focused and the fact that they freshly made real sourdough with whole and simple ingredients has really appealed to us. I had the gift of meeting Dave today, who answered my various questions with patience, kindness and pure wisdom. He was generous enough to share a loaf of artisan and lovingly made sourdough with me to surprise my daughter and husband with. I can't express the joy on their faces when I walked in with something so purely crafted. The bread was consumed to RAVED reviews! The absolute best bread they've ever had, they said it was the SOFTEST sourdough, so incredibly fluffy, pillow like and made a basic turkey sandwich taste like a gourmet meal. Dave made today a truly magical experience by being as kind as he was, and to have a bakery with such quality people and ingredients to have as a new go to is a wonderful feeling. Interesting name choice which was what brought me in. Tiny industrial style bakery on the main street through San Juan, right around the corner from The Mission. Great location and great potential. The sourdough bread is amazing, the cinnamon rolls are amazing, the cookies are fine. The thing that stops me from running back is the service - not warm and friendly, and definitely does not go the extra mile to promote products. My family and I have purchased numerous items from KFN at the Redo Market multiple times and have frequented the brick and mortar location a couple times before, and each time it has blown us away. The people are always kind, down-to-earth and helpful. And of course, the bread is AMAZING. Unfortunately, This was not my experience yesterday when I entered the store. Firstly it was towards the late afternoon so there was only one fresh loaf of bread left-- no one's fault. But the ladies in the shop seemed super agitated and the vibe was just off. They were curt and not super friendly, but I just assumed it had been very busy and they were probably just done with the day. I confirmed they had no loaves really left and decided on two freshly made sandwiches instead to bring home for later. The sandwiches were made, I paid for them and promptly left with no issues. When I got home one sandwich was incredibly dry and lacked any flavor and the other one was so smothered in oil it leaked through the paper bag and into my car... it was practically inedible. In fact, my son removed everything and just ate the deli meat and cheese alone. I wouldn't have been as disappointed if it was some random deli, but I know FKN can do better and these two sandwiches costed $26 dollars! I have ordered sandwiches to bring home before and they were excellent so I know this isn't the norm. I love this establishment but this experience is unacceptable. I'm happy to pay these prices for a local spot known for their quality product but I was so soured by this experience I don't know if I will be going back. read more

Wow! What a gem. We stopped in today after hearing about the pastries. My husband got the sourdough almond croissant and I got the cinnamon toast scone. We both said our pastries were the best but both were delicious. The scone was dense but still light and spongy. The flavor was the perfect cinnamon without being too sugary or overpowering. Bread is great, but online ordering is not available for bread. There is no one to call (nobody picks up), and I've driven here multiple times and they are out, so a waste of time. Not sure why they don't offer ordering system, it's a headache. We've switched to another bakery that does overnight pre orders and online ordering for bread. Cashier always seems annoyed when they are out of bread, and so are customers. They also don't slice bread. read more

Super small shop, about three workers when I walked in and they just awkwardly stared until I said hello. When you are the only one in the shop and it's 3 workers staring in dead silence it tends to be awkward. Didn't see any pastries to my liking, but got the walnut cranberry sourdough. Pretty good. Nothing that blew me away. Really wish they would hire nicer people that can force a smile. One customer walked in when I was in there, looked around for 15 seconds and then left. Was in the area and tried this place from the recommendation of a friend. She advised me that as a sourdough lover, they not only bake fresh loafs of sourdough bread, but also include it in everything else on the menu - their scones, croissants, cookies, cupcakes, etc. We got 2 loafs of bread to try plus cookies, croissants, and a Cali Toast. The bread was amazing and the croissants were the real star of the show for me. I absolutely love chocolate croissants and sourdough on its own, so the sourdough added into it was the perfect combination I didn't know I needed until now! The inside was pretty small and I assume they sell out before the end of day on a lot of things. The guy after me got the last chocolate croissant of the day - and this was only 10:45am. It's just a bakery where you can buy and take out! No seating or such inside. We came in right before a small rush (got lucky!) but the staff inside were friendly despite it being busy! If I ever find myself in the area again, I'll definitely be making another trip to FKN Bread! read more

Sitting in the heart of downtown San Juan Capistrano is FKN Bread; a delicious bakery with a brilliant eye-catching name (it's the first letter of the owner's three kids' names... I know, it's not what I thought it stood for either). I kept seeing this pop up on Yelp, after seeing all the positive reviews, I felt like it was time to drop by and check it out. THE FOODS | Bread loaves, pastries, cookies, sandwiches, pizzas, and salads. Pizzas are only served on Mondays. We feasted on... - Chocolate Croissant | Crispy & flakey on the outside; buttery softness filled with chocolate on the inside. Delicious and sweet. - Almond Croissant | Filled with almond cream (frangipane), topped with almonds and powdered sugar. Really enjoyable with a cup of coffee. - Classic Sourdough Bread Loaf | The exterior is firm and crunchy, while the interior is soft with a slight elasticity as you pull the bread apart. We ate this as is, sometimes toasted with butter, and baked in the oven with garlic spread. In all cases, the bread was amazing. Side note, every time we'd slice a few pieces of bread, we'd ask, "do you want some FKN bread?" It was hilarious, you had to be there. The great COVID lock-in of 2020 is over. And admit it, you haven't baked a sourdough loaf since. But those piping hot loaves coming out of your oven were the bees knees and the highlight of weekday afternoons for your family. Now what? FKN, that's what! FKN (eff-kay-nnn, named after the owner's kids' initials) Bread is all about the sourdough. Large sourdough loaves for $12.99 that could feed two families or maybe a small village. Loaves that must weigh close to 5 lbs. They are hefty round puppies. Sourdough Round Loaves: Classic Italian Parmesan Everything (like the bagel) Cranberry Walnut Chocolate Chip Cinnamon Jalapeno Cheddar Kalamata Olive The day I went they were out of the Kalamata Olive so I went with the Jalapeno Cheddar. The cut a cross in the middle and stuff it with Cheddar Cheese and Jalapeno slices to where it bubbles out the middle. As impressive as it looks, after cutting into it at home, I do wish there was a little more cheese that made it into the bread. It is center heavy so the portion of the break that is close to the edges doesn't have much cheese coverage. The sourdough is good, is dense and has a good tang to it. Jalapeno Cheddar is their best seller. Next time I want to try the Olive or the Everything. I also got a couple of cookies. The Brown Butter Sea Salt Toffee ($2.50) is a rich, buttery chocolate chip cookie for when you want to splurge on yourself. I was even more impressed with the Sourdough Almond Butter cookie ($2.50) where I could smell the almond smell before I even bit in. The almond flavor was all over the cookie, which I loved because some almond baked goods are a little too faint with the almond flavor. Not this cookie. There are also almond slices folded into throughout. The have about a half dozen other cookie flavors, plain croissants, jalapeno cheddar scones and a $14 Pumpkin Loaf that looked very tempting if I was a pumpkin fan (I'm not). The front of the bakery is really small and not much space to wait. This place is a slice of heaven. I'm located in north county san diego and have still managed to go twice. Ive enjoyed their sandwiches and bread. Im still on the hunt for a local bakery closer to me with this quality of bread. Their pastries are divine - anyone that complains about pricing doesnt understand the "made from scratch" concept compared to an industrial kitchen where the quality goes down. I am happy to pay the price for all their treats and look forward to the next time Im in the area to buy more!! The service is great, and its a bakery so while there isnt much seating inside san juan is a cute place to eat at one of the benches along the sidewalk. It's right across Heritage BBQ so if you're waiting in line for bbq, you or a friend can cross the street to grab some goodies while you wait. Their toffee cookie is amazing and not as sweet as I thought it would be. The texture of the cookie has a perfect chew to it as well. I thought it was cool that they had a baklava croissant - which was flaky and hits the spot. I also loved the dark chocolate croissant as well. What a gem! I put my name down at Breezy and had to wait. I walk across the street and see FKN Bread and wanted to check out the fresh bakery. Boy am I glad that I did. They had a large $4 honey biscuit, the last one, so I tried it. It was life changing. The bottom was crunchy but the inside was soft and just so fresh and delicious with honey on top, it was the perfect blend of tastes.
