I walked out with a jalapeño cheddar sourdough loaf, a sourdough almond croissant, chocolate croissant, brown sugar oatmeal cookie, & the parmesan garlic scone. A lot more than I intended. Lol. The croissants are meh, they're okay. The oatmeal cookie is good. The jalapeño cheddar sourdough loaf is bomb... but to my surprise the PARMESAN GARLIC SCONE is so so good. The last time I was in SJC, I saw FKN and wanted to try it, but since the line was so long I decided not to. During my visit this week, I was waiting for my takeaway order from Breezy and saw that there was no line so I headed over. They have a nice selection of pastries, sandwiches, and loaves of beautiful breads! I was curious that their croissants are sourdough based, so I decided to purchase a couple to try. And of course I couldn't resist passing on their scone and coffee cake! Their chocolate cinnamon bread peaked my interest as well. The employee said it makes a great french toast, so I decided to give it a try. Everything I tried was great. I loved that the scone was like a biscuit - buttery and crispy on the bottom. The chocolate cinnamon bread had chocolate folded throughout the loaf, but I didn't really taste the cinnamon. It's a sourdough bread, so you can taste the tang of the sourdough with the chocolate which makes for an interesting flavor, but I enjoyed a slice of it toasted and topped with some peanut butter, blueberries, and honey. I also used it to make french toast and it was good as well, although I prefer a softer type of bread for my french toast personally. It's a generous sized loaf so I sliced half of it into smaller slices and stuck it in the freezer to enjoy later! read more

Friendly people manning the bread. I love that sourdough is their bread and butter here. Cookies, muffins, croissants and breads are all made off this dough for a unique flavor .... Or rather everything has that sourdough punch to it. I love their pistachio croissant the most but I don't think you can go wrong here. It's a small shop so no spot to really sit and eat, it's def more of a take away spot or a place to get some loaves for the road. read more

See, it all started back in 2020 when the pandemic started and I was searching high and low for a delicious chocolate chip cookie. That's when I came across this lovely family baking out of their home and providing their community with delicious baked goods... Fast forward and here we are... and I'm still in love with their sourdough chocolate chip cookies. A few of my pics are from 2020... and some more recent. Now they have a storefront and cute packaging with their name on it. So different than picking it up from the front of their place, but I'm so glad they have survived and are doing well! If you get a chance, try them out. Or at the least, their sourdough chocolate chip cookies. They are delicious, and have such a great texture to them... almost like it has oats in it - maybe they do! A friend has been talking about trying bread from here for a while so while I was running errands I popped in and let her know I can pick up whatever she wanted. The parking can be difficult. There's a few spaces directly in front and a pay parking lot in the back. I just parked in the back and hoped I didn't get a ticket for my quick stay. FKN Bread is a pick up and take home spot. There's no room to sit and enjoy inside. I was expecting just sourdough bread varieties, but there was also a pumpkin loaf, pastries, muffins, and cookies! My friend got the classic sourdough loaf and the everything sourdough loaf. She also got a lemon blueberry muffing, and a variety of six different cookies. I bout myself just two cookies. My friend raved about the everything sourdough loaf and sent me back for the pumpkin bread and more sourdough iced sugar cookies. I had one of the sourdough sprinkles cookies the day before and had to get another! I also tried the brown butter toffee chocolate chip sea salt cookie, which was amazing and have been dreaming about that one as well. I cannot sing the praises of FKN Bread enough. Today was the first day that we tried the place and my wife and I can safely say we found our go to bread spot (at least for the time being). The loaves are all the same affordable price and being the first customer of the day today the three loaves we purchased were so fresh. We purchased the Rosemary Garlic, Everything and Jalapeño Cheddar and all were full of flavor, freshness and all of the good smells you'd expect from just made bakery goods. The service was outstanding as the person behind the calendar was patient as I asked questions and made a switch of loaves at the last second. I also really liked the bakery ambiance with the exposed brick and the ability to see a significant amount of the bread making process. Was walking around town and came by this little place. I mean, who doesn't love bread/bakery. The lobby area is small but the selection of baked goods is nice. They even have sourdough cookies. What a wonderful surprise. I love muffins and we found this awesome place. While spending my Birthday in San Juan Capistrano we went downtown. Today was my first time in FKN, and I am SO glad I finally made it in! We've been wanting to check it out for some time, especially because we are health focused and the fact that they freshly made real sourdough with whole and simple ingredients has really appealed to us. I had the gift of meeting Dave today, who answered my various questions with patience, kindness and pure wisdom. He was generous enough to share a loaf of artisan and lovingly made sourdough with me to surprise my daughter and husband with. I can't express the joy on their faces when I walked in with something so purely crafted. The bread was consumed to RAVED reviews! The absolute best bread they've ever had, they said it was the SOFTEST sourdough, so incredibly fluffy, pillow like and made a basic turkey sandwich taste like a gourmet meal. Dave made today a truly magical experience by being as kind as he was, and to have a bakery with such quality people and ingredients to have as a new go to is a wonderful feeling. Interesting name choice which was what brought me in. Tiny industrial style bakery on the main street through San Juan, right around the corner from The Mission. Great location and great potential. The sourdough bread is amazing, the cinnamon rolls are amazing, the cookies are fine. The thing that stops me from running back is the service - not warm and friendly, and definitely does not go the extra mile to promote products. Hands on the table, I've not been here but I have tried their bread one hungry afternoon wandering around a friend's kitchen when someone stuffed this tangy bouncy sourdough right in my talking trap. 'This bread is SO GOOD!' Was the last thing I heard before disappearing into my thoughts on what it would take for me to make something like this. I feel like $12 isn't enough for a loaf as perfect and gorgeous as this. But I also wouldn't be able to afford something so... thoroughly made with what one could only imagine as a very well cared for mother starter. The grand pumba-sourdough bubblies. As someone gifted with little patience, 'time-tarded'ness, classic ADHD, it's near impossible to carry on feeding and caring for these micro-organisms. Cacti have died on my watch. The hydration level in this bread is perfect. Spongy and moist on the inside with plenty of air pockets, flavorful spiced crust and beautiful patterns scored. Any baker or failed patissier *ahem** would appreciate even just a slice of this unbuttered bread. If I made something this grand, I wouldn't know whether to frame it or cast it! My family and I have purchased numerous items from KFN at the Redo Market multiple times and have frequented the brick and mortar location a couple times before, and each time it has blown us away. The people are always kind, down-to-earth and helpful. And of course, the bread is AMAZING. Unfortunately, This was not my experience yesterday when I entered the store. Firstly it was towards the late afternoon so there was only one fresh loaf of bread left-- no one's fault. But the ladies in the shop seemed super agitated and the vibe was just off. They were curt and not super friendly, but I just assumed it had been very busy and they were probably just done with the day. I confirmed they had no loaves really left and decided on two freshly made sandwiches instead to bring home for later. The sandwiches were made, I paid for them and promptly left with no issues. When I got home one sandwich was incredibly dry and lacked any flavor and the other one was so smothered in oil it leaked through the paper bag and into my car... it was practically inedible. In fact, my son removed everything and just ate the deli meat and cheese alone. I wouldn't have been as disappointed if it was some random deli, but I know FKN can do better and these two sandwiches costed $26 dollars! I have ordered sandwiches to bring home before and they were excellent so I know this isn't the norm. I love this establishment but this experience is unacceptable. I'm happy to pay these prices for a local spot known for their quality product but I was so soured by this experience I don't know if I will be going back. read more

I know, it's not what I thought it stood for either). I kept seeing this pop up on Yelp, after seeing all the positive reviews, I felt like it was time to drop by and check it out. THE FOODS | Bread loaves, pastries, cookies, sandwiches, pizzas, and salads. Pizzas are only served on Mondays. We feasted on... - Chocolate Croissant | Crispy & flakey on the outside; buttery softness filled with chocolate on the inside. Delicious and sweet. - Almond Croissant | Filled with almond cream (frangipane), topped with almonds and powdered sugar. Really enjoyable with a cup of coffee. - Classic Sourdough Bread Loaf | The exterior is firm and crunchy, while the interior is soft with a slight elasticity as you pull the bread apart. We ate this as is, sometimes toasted with butter, and baked in the oven with garlic spread. In all cases, the bread was amazing. Side note, every time we'd slice a few pieces of bread, we'd ask, "do you want some FKN bread?" It was hilarious, you had to be there. THE FKN BREAD FEELS | Sort of an "order and pick up" deal at this place. There isn't any seating inside nor outside. A couple of display cases with pastries fill up the counter area. An expansive space towards the back is used for baking bread, pastries, and preparing sandwiches/pizzas. It feels like you walked into a big kitchen with bread smells emanating in the air. THE PARKING SITUATION | If you're lucky enough, there's street parking in front of FKN Bread. For those who aren't so lucky, there is a surface lot across the street (behind Heritage Barbecue) with pay stations. Parking is $2/hour, 4 hours max. The great COVID lock-in of 2020 is over. And admit it, you haven't baked a sourdough loaf since. But those piping hot loaves coming out of your oven were the bees knees and the highlight of weekday afternoons for your family. Now what? FKN, that's what! FKN (eff-kay-nnn, named after the owner's kids' initials) Bread is all about the sourdough. Large sourdough loaves for $12.99 that could feed two families or maybe a small village. Loaves that must weigh close to 5 lbs. They are hefty round puppies. Sourdough Round Loaves: Classic Italian Parmesan Everything (like the bagel) Cranberry Walnut Chocolate Chip Cinnamon Jalapeno Cheddar Kalamata Olive The day I went they were out of the Kalamata Olive so I went with the Jalapeno Cheddar. The cut a cross in the middle and stuff it with Cheddar Cheese and Jalapeno slices to where it bubbles out the middle. As impressive as it looks, after cutting into it at home, I do wish there was a little more cheese that made it into the bread. It is center heavy so the portion of the break that is close to the edges doesn't have much cheese coverage. The sourdough is good, is dense and has a good tang to it. Jalapeno Cheddar is their best seller. Next time I want to try the Olive or the Everything. I also got a couple of cookies. The Brown Butter Sea Salt Toffee ($2.50) is a rich, buttery chocolate chip cookie for when you want to splurge on yourself. I was even more impressed with the Sourdough Almond Butter cookie ($2.50) where I could smell the almond smell before I even bit in. The almond flavor was all over the cookie, which I loved because some almond baked goods are a little too faint with the almond flavor. Not this cookie. There are also almond slices folded into throughout. The have about a half dozen other cookie flavors, plain croissants, jalapeno cheddar scones and a $14 Pumpkin Loaf that looked very tempting if I was a pumpkin fan (I'm not). The front of the bakery is really small and not much space to wait. We picked up some of this sourdough bread at the Mission Viejo Farmers Market a couple weeks ago. It is HEAVENLY!!!! So delicious! The gal at the Farmers Market was very nice, and explained all the options to us of what she had. My mom and I split a loaf, and we both fell in love with it. Super small shop, about three workers when I walked in and they just awkwardly stared until I said hello. When you are the only one in the shop and it's 3 workers staring in dead silence it tends to be awkward. Didn't see any pastries to my liking, but got the walnut cranberry sourdough. Pretty good. Nothing that blew me away. Really wish they would hire nicer people that can force a smile. One customer walked in when I was in there, looked around for 15 seconds and then left. They never acknowledged her, she didn't seem to like the vibe either. Won't be back unfortunately, maybe if they offered better pastries. read more

Was in the area and tried this place from the recommendation of a friend. She advised me that as a sourdough lover, they not only bake fresh loafs of sourdough bread, but also include it in everything else on the menu - their scones, croissants, cookies, cupcakes, etc. We got 2 loafs of bread to try plus cookies, croissants, and a Cali Toast. The bread was amazing and the croissants were the real star of the show for me. I absolutely love chocolate croissants and sourdough on its own, so the sourdough added into it was the perfect combination I didn't know I needed until now! The inside was pretty small and I assume they sell out before the end of day on a lot of things. The guy after me got the last chocolate croissant of the day - and this was only 10:45am. It's just a bakery where you can buy and take out! No seating or such inside. We came in right before a small rush (got lucky!) but the staff inside were friendly despite it being busy! I first asked Stephanie, the wonderful employee who helped me with my top picks that morning, which sandwich was HER favorite. She replied, "The Turkey Sandwich for sure!" So that sealed the deal for me and I was excited to have my first bite! The ingredients were so fresh! I could taste each power play as munched away -- the arugula, avocados, turkey slices, and pepper jack cheese. YUM! I walked around to find a spot to enjoy my sandwich and found El Cafe Real across the street. They had a beautiful outdoor seating area and a variety of drinks available, so I popped in and ordered the Rose Latte -- as recommended from the cashier. Delicious!
