I often leave with unfinished business, not finding what I looked for, even early in the afternoon. The location is great, as mentioned. However; the store itself is often untidy, which is annoying for a shop that's aiming to be high-end. The staff is smiling and nice, but not very knowledgable. There's no point in asking questions in the fresh food section, only a few people there can answer. What I'm buying there: bread, a few vegetables that I can't find elsewhere, cheese, crisps and nuts. And every now and then fish, if they happen to have what I'm looking for.

The menu was okey, but I think this is a good place to dine if you're a meat lover. We decided to try out the plank steak, and I'm so glad I did because that is the best plank steak I've ever tasted. The meat was perfectly fried, and the berneasauce contained a hint of creme fraise which made it SO much better. We also got butterfried veggies and mashed potatoes - an amazing combo! We opted for the only two items in the "Meat Dishes" section of the menu. I had the Whale Steak (minke) which is technically a mammal, while my wife got Reindeer Entrecôte. We paired this with a Pinot Noir and Spicy Hot Chocolate. Both tasted like beef with the gamey flavor offsetted by the red wine sauce and the caramelized green beans. Work brings me to Bergen from time to time and I've had the good fortune to dine at Colonialen twice. Once with two good friends and another time simply by myself. A restaurant has to be amazing to get me to sit alone for 3.5 hours to go through all the courses. The food here is imaginative and consistent. The wine pairings are spot-on. Listing the 20 or so dishes I've eaten there would take forever, so I'll stick with two or three of the standouts. The first was a group of northern grains served in a mortar with a pestle. You ground up the grains with the pestle and an oxtail consomme was poured over top. This was painfully delicious. It was so good that I shamelessly begged (and received) a second. On my second visit, the staff recognized me and gave me a lot of attention (which was nice since I was alone). I had long conversations with the chef and the sommalier about how they sourced their food and selected their wines. Their wine pairings are eclectic (france, germany, italy, pacific northwest, even a Norwegian selection worked its way in). If you are in Bergen or traveling to Bergen, this needs to be on your list ... perhaps more than anything else in town.
