Driving to Fixed Gear, I thought my GPS must be wrong. I was in the middle of a residential neighbourhood, with house after house going by. And then there was this building. This must be the place. I parked almost directly in front of the entrance and noticed a baby stroller at the front door. Huh? Is the drinking age 19 years or 19 months? Walking in, the place was crowded, with several kids in there. Hmmm, there's no food or non-alcoholic beverages on the menu. There is, however, a food truck parked right next door. The ambiance had a friendly neighbourhood vibe, despite the obvious brewing tanks. The lighting was intimately dim and the decor had a bicycle theme, hence the name, Fixed Gear. It was well done. Nice place. They offer ten beers on tap, although some were already sold out. We chose a flight of four, for only $9.95. It's a good way to sample several beers if you're not familiar with their offerings. I liked the ones that I had. I probably would have tried more if I wasn't facing a 90 minute drive back home. With a nice warm ambiance, good beer with several choices, and good service, this was a good experience. The highlight of our visit though, was the brewery's own very playful three month old puppy. He (she?) was running around interacting with all the patrons, especially the kids. One of the patrons had a bigger dog that was well behaved. A kid friendly, pet friendly, neighbourhood brewery? Why not?

This place was so cute. Very nice patio set up. They had lots of options on tap. Lots of good beer choices for a flight or glass. Everyone working was very nice and helpful

I felt a hot summer Saturday was the wrong day to visit. Crammed, cramped, tight... small interior, great looking exterior. I mostly wanted to drink 1 fast and we moved on, no more Saturdays, in the summer next time....

The atmosphere was good, and the service and food met all our expectations. The menus are a bit limited.

For a retirement gift, my boss had bought $50 gift certificates to six micro breweries in Guelph, which has been great. We've had dinner at some, but at others, I have just bought cans of beer to go (usually I put in a bit more cash and get 18 cans). This place must not have had a proper gift certificate, because I just had a "pint card" (4 beers value - $34) and the balance was rung up as 2 X 473mL lagers, for about $50. I explained to the server that I was sure this was meant to represent a $50 gift card and she said it was just a pint card and my boss must have drank the two tall boys there (while touring around Guelph to get gift cards at 2pm). Anyway, I finally took the 4 cans, which were $34 plus tax, although for $30, you could get 6 cans. I'm probably going on too long about this, but I feel like I was ripped off and this is my only way to deal with it, emotionally. Anyway, I will never go back there again, and please, never buy a gift certificate from this establishment.

The service was attentive although note you need to order at the bar.

It was a busy place when I walked in and fortunately has food as I needed some badly. They have a lot of beers and a few ciders on tap, I counted 17 today. I went with a flight of four, which felt very restrictive and not very inclusive. The Berserker raspberry lemon sour was up first. This had a very light color and good flavor to it. The flavors worked together very well. The Luminance DIPA was recommended by the charming young lady next to me at the bar. I hadn't chosen a fourth beer and told the beer tender I'd take his choice in the matter. He went with the luminance. And I'm glad he did. Nice flavor throughout. Solid beer here! The Absolute Elsewhere maibock was a good example of the style. Fairly light and easy to drink overall. Last, maybe, was the smoked honey brown ale. I ordered this since SWPFTD loves browns and reds. This was pretty tasty and I think SWPFTD would have enjoyed it. I guess I am not a fan of the vibes, as I do prefer more of a pub style brewery than one that gives hipster vibes. The service is fine as well. Thus was pretty hopping for a small brewery but it became clear why when I found out they were doing trivia. Yes, I'm a team of one and...I suck! The Scarlet Fox Amber was a smooth amber which SWPFTD would enjoy. Finn's Jig pale ale tasted a little...dank for lack of a better term. I'm curious what hops they used in this one. Certainly not bad but different. Ok, I'm really not sure which beer this was I just tasted. No, it is NOT because this is my third brewery this afternoon! It's because they only had three of their five regulars on tap along with three seasonals. No, they didn't mark the four beers on the tasting board. That's ok, it was either the Laddicus lager or the cream ale. I'm guessing the cream ale but can't be sure. Regardless, it was a very drinkable lager. The last one here was the Fire Side ale. I knew I could taste nutmeg in it and the young ladies behind the bar confirmed it was the amber ale spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. WBB was obviously a local hangout. The kind of place SWPFTD and I would hang out at if it were close to home. I left with a nice glass and some beer and the merch is really cool along with the discs they sell for disc golf! We went for lunch so there weren't many food options other than snacks, so we got some Grilled Brie Cheese Sandwiches which were fine, I mean, Brie is always amazing, but it was just missing something whether it was honey and nuts, cranberry sauce, ketchup etc. The beer was great as expected. We all got flights and enjoyed all of our drinks. Favourites included the Crispy Forever,, S.P.A., and Helles Lager. Fair prices here and a nice atmosphere. Our server was soooo nice too, she heard that I was skeptical on trying the County Brown Ale so she so kindly brought me a little sample to try during our tasting! I'm not big on porters/ stouts and can be picky with dark brown ales, but I very much enjoyed this one, so thank you for the taster! Will be back in the summer hopefully :)

This company traces its roots back to 1834 so I knew there would certainly be a history lesson to be had along with more than a few tasty samplings of some of the finest beers brewed anywhere on the planet including one my my favorites Sapporo Premium. Having recently visited a few of Sapporo's facilities in Japan I couldn't wait to see how this brewery stacked up against the ultra modern facilities across the pond. This facility still brews its tradition brands from recipes passed down from generation to generation and and still maintains the quality associated with the Sleeman name although there have been a number of upgrades in technology since Sapporo Holdings acquired them in 2006 ensuring the quality and taste remains consistent throughout the process. The company has retained the Sleeman name and continues to promote the brand using it notorious past in ad campaigns. The Sleeman family has a long and rich history in this area, playing a role not just in the brewing business but in the very fabric of Guelph society. They were involved in early transportation, sports and community growth, and contributed to political and social life." Sleeman history highlights: * John H. Sleeman opened the Stamford Spring Brewery on the Niagara River. He relocated to Guelph, where he established Silver Creek Brewery in 1851. * After taking over in 1867, Sleeman's son, George, doubled production and established outlets in 15 cities. * George became the first mayor of the new City of Guelph, and helped introduce hydroelectric power and pay for streetcar service. * Debts incurred after George single-handedly funded construction of the Guelph Railway Co. prompted a bank takeover of Silver Creek Brewery in 1902. * George and his wife, Sarah, opened rival Spring Bank Beverages in the same year. In 1906, he bought back Silver Creek Brewery and merged both businesses under management of his son Henry. * During Prohibition, Henry and his brothers smuggled alcohol for more than a decade. They were charged with smuggling and tax evasion in 1933. The family's brewing licence was suspended and the family barred from brewing for 50 years. * Nearly 50 years later, John W. Sleeman's Aunt Florian shared his grandfather's recipe book and family history and encouraged him to start brewing. Sleeman Brewing and Malting Co. Ltd. opened with the original recipes, bottles and trademarks in 1988. * The company has grown and acquired several firms over the years and became a national company with breweries and other facilities from coast to coast. * In 2006 Sapporo Brewery of Japan acquired Sleeman and continues to operate and promote the beers that started it all.
