    Momiji after surgery
    Maryann G.

This review is long overdue , but well deserved. I can truly say Dr. stern was the best doctor and will be missed. He was not only compasionate but honest as well and loved animals as much as we love our fur babies too. I was a bit skeptical in coming back, but Im the type of person that gives people the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad I did, because not only the staff was amazing. But Dr. Min went above and beyond to make sure my 3 fur babies were taken care of. Dr.Min went above and beyond with my maltipoo (Momiji) to make sure his surgery was a success and his healing process went smoothly. I wanna thank Dr. Min and her sister and staff. Thank you soooooo much and our Fur babies will remain a loyal patient of your's and will not go anywher else. I wish I could give Five Star Vet more than Five Star. I give them !00 stars **************** Thank you again! We love you guys!

We take our 3 dogs here for their yearly medical checkups with Dr. Min. Recently our Maltipoo had to have surgery to remove a growth on his eye lid. Also we had them pull out some rotten teeth while he was knocked out. Surgery went very well and we are back after 2 weeks for a follow up. The doctors and staff are very friendly and caring. Thank you so much Dr. Min & 5 Star Veterinary Care. We definitely recommend them for your fur babies.

Took my dog here after the San Fernando vet hospital did absolutely nothing and couldn't have been happier. They catered to my dogs special needs and interacted so well with her. They talked me through the price and helped with my budget. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The lady at the counter was super nice and the one who helped with the medication was so thorough and professional.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm so happy I found this place. Thank you guys for taking care of my dog so well!

Both good and bad experiences have come from this Veterinary. For starters, I have been coming here for years to get all of my 4 dogs their vaccines. They have been great and we have never had a problem. Until my puppy was diagnosed with a CKD, Congenital Kindey Diesease. My dog Lily (1 year old) had been showing abnormal signs. She was skinny, would not eat a lot (sometimes she wouldn't eat at all), would throw up, consume a ton of water, vomit every now and then, would be depressed, would constantly get itchy bumps and lumps and always hurt her shoulders. The first time I explained all this to the doctor he gave me medicine for her itch that worked for two weeks and then stopped working. I took her back and after some tests, out of the blue they said "your dog has kidney failure. You have three options: take her to the hospital literally right now, put her to sleep, or take her home and wait for her to pass away." I was completely caught off guard. Nothing was sugar coated; everything was so subtle. The only thing I could do was ask "are there any other options?" and break down to tears in my car. The vet, Dr. Alexander Stern spoke to me over the phone. He said "I really think you should consider putting her to sleep. Trying to treat her illness is like a shot in the dark. It could cost you $5-10k dollars. She needs her kidneys flushed and even that cannot cure her." The nurse told me to go home and "process" everything and come back when I was ready. She took my payment and told me "we close tomorrow at 2pm, just to let you know." I thought.. they want me to put her to sleep tomorrow??? After hours of crying my eyes out, I did my research. I kept looking for positive things. I asked a friend's vet for a quick consultation based on the blood work. She recommended to go to a different vet, get an ultrasound, urinalysis, and blood work again. I went to a different vet (Thrive) and without giving them any explanation, they said they needed to do all the tests my friend's vet recommended. I approved and two days later they called me and told me to rush Lily to the ER to get an ultrasound. I went to Access Specialty Hospital where there is actually a Nephrologist (I did a ton of research). I actually already had Lily scheduled with him in late December (that was the earliest available). Ultimately, they said Lily's kidneys are abnormal but not life threatening. She will end up living a shorter lifespan but with treatment she can be with me a little longer. She has been taking special medication, prescription food, getting blood work, taking supplements, and over the past month, her blood work has improved so much and she has actually gained a little over a pound which is amazing. She eats normal and now she is super energetic and looks very happy. She has not hurt her shoulders since and she is no longer depressed. From the expenses with Five Star to the new Vet to the hospital ER visit along with her routine blood work and everything has cost me around $1,600 compared to $5-10k that Dr Alexander Stern had said. I am sooooo glad I did not take Five Star Vet's suggestion of putting her to sleep. I still wonder why they jumped so quickly into "put her to sleep" mode instead of offering me multiple alternatives. I am assuming they mainly treat people with low income and they automatically assumed I would not be interested in other alternatives or treatment because of the price? Or maybe he is not a good "long term" veterinarian. I don't know, they were very good with everything else with my other dogs. I am not rating this a "1" because of how they have been good to me in other situations. However, with Lily, I felt they didn't put effort and were like "either she is rushed to the hospital NOW or you put her down NOW." Of course, they gave me time to think about it but still. It was a stressful and hard situation. I will probably still come here for yearly vaccines but Lily has her own treatment plan elsewhere. I thank them for seeing all the signs and for the proper diagnosis for Lily. They were able to find the problem, they just didn't handle it the way I would have preferred. Where Lily would stay here with me.

Six years ago, my female cat needed emergency surgery, and they were able to save her life while keeping the cost far below what I was quoted elsewhere. More recently, I had to bring my male cat in for an urgent medical concern, and once again he received excellent care at a price that was significantly more reasonable than the emergency hospital. What sets this practice apart is that they understand that quality veterinary care should be accessible. It is not simply about saving money, t is about giving pet owners options so they can provide the best possible care for their animals without being forced into financial hardship. As a full-time nursing student caring for two senior cats, I truly appreciate having a veterinarian who works with pet owners while never compromising the quality of care. The staff is consistently kind and helpful. During my most recent visit, after being up all night in the ER with my cat, the receptionist even brought me a cup of coffee. It was a small gesture, but it speaks volumes about the compassion and dedication of everyone at this clinic. I highly recommend San Fernando Pet Hospital to anyone looking for knowledgeable, compassionate veterinary care at a fair and reasonable cost. They do not nickel and dime you, they do what is best for your pet, and they always try to work with walk-ins. There may be a wait, but that is not only to be expected anywhere, it also comes without the ER cost.

When he was returned to my husband, we were told he might have a reaction for a few days. What followed was not a mild reaction. Our cat came home unable to stand, refusing food, clearly in severe pain, and urinating on himself. He had previously received the same vaccine without any side effects. We contacted the clinic immediately and were repeatedly told this was normal. It was not. After four days of watching our cat in agony with no improvement, we called again and were offered a visit with another veterinarian. At that appointment, we were reassured that everything was fine. The veterinarian manipulated his leg to demonstrate that nothing was wrong and even suggested unrelated care. Meanwhile, our cat continued to suffer. After about a month, he was still severely limping and in obvious pain. We called multiple times. When we were finally able to speak with someone, it was suggested that he may have had a pre-existing condition, which was absolutely not true. We then sought a second opinion. An X-ray immediately revealed a broken hip. We were asked whether he had experienced major trauma, such as being hit by a car. Our cat is strictly indoors and had no access to anything that could explain such an injury. Because of the delay, our cat endured prolonged pain, had to be confined for an extended period, and developed additional strain and arthritis in the other leg. We also incurred significant out-of-pocket expenses. We reported the case to the veterinary board. Afterward, Dr. Prabakhar called my husband expressing concern about the situation and potential consequences. The difference between what we were repeatedly told and what was ultimately discovered is devastating. Our concerns were consistently dismissed while our cat was suffering. Based on this experience, we strongly warn other pet owners not to trust this clinic with serious medical concerns and to seek immediate independent opinions.

I want to share my view-altering experience about the downfall of what now has become a…read moreprofit-over-pet care clinic, so much so that they charge you for services they don't actually properly perform. I have taken my Morkie, Hizee, to this clinic since he was a puppy. Initially, they provided good care and kindness, but recent management changes have adversely affected the quality of their services. It now seems they care more about profit than our pets' well-being. They have introduced unexpected charges that I find unacceptable, especially without prior notification. We are now seeing "Technician Appointment charges," even though the services provided have not changed. Be sure to check your bills closely, as these extra fees were not explained to us and are unreasonable, particularly since my dog's care has declined. Hizee is now nearly four years old, and he is not receiving the proper attention and care that he needs, despite the amount we are paying. Let me explain further. My dog needed his anal glands expressed every 3-4 weeks because he is a small breed, which is considered normal for them. Sometimes it was a struggle for me to bring him in, given the financial constraints; mind you, I tried to make it a regular thing. When I did make the timing regularly, he was almost always full since he had just started scooting, and they would say they would make sure to bring him in regularly to avoid being too full or to avoid hurting the dog. During my last visit, I was told that his glands were barely filled (red flag 1). They usually told me they were full or that it was a good time, but that day was different. Mind you, he wasn't even in the room for that long, because I was surprised when they brought him out so quickly, saying he wasn't full and that one side was barely there. Despite this, I was charged for the gland expression, and I found an unexpected technician appointment fee added without any notice. When I questioned this while I was there, the new staff member's response was rude, on top of his glands not being full and barely expressed. Less than a day later, I called the clinic to discuss these charges since my dog was still uncomfortable and scooting, which was why I had visited in the first place. The receptionist was very dismissive and rude, which is unacceptable, especially given the surprise of the extra fees and my dog's visible discomfort. When I took Hizee to the groomer a day or two after the vet visit--who is also a former veterinary technician--she noticed that his glands expressed themselves during his bath because they were full and needed more attention, even though they were irritated. This indicated that the clinic likely charged me for a service they did not perform properly. My dog spent less time at the clinic than usual and came out much quicker than expected. They claimed he wasn't full and barely had anything. How could he be full every 3-4 weeks and suddenly not this time? If he wasn't full, how did he become full again in less than two days when it normally takes 3-4 weeks? It is clear to me that the clinic no longer prioritizes our pets' well-being. They appear more interested in profit than in providing quality care. I strongly recommend that anyone considering this clinic think twice. It has become more profit-driven than a place dedicated to caring for pets.

So...I will be getting my dog spayed elsewhere, and they have lost any future business with me because I don't think it's fair under the circumstances and because I only was postponing it, I wasn't canceling it altogether, not until they penalized me for $100. I'm giving them 3 stars because of past experiences with this clinic with other pets I've taken over there in the past, and the vet was nice and compassionate then, but to me this $100 penalty for just wanting to postpone to me is unreasonable (I was scheduled for a surgery that same week and wouldn't have been able to fully take care of my girl while we were both in recovery and I thought I could postpone my procedure at the time I made her appointment). I found out later that they didn't want me to postpone my procedure (heart related) and I was freaking out about how I was going to take care of her during her recovery. There was urgency to get her appointment at the time I made it because I was afraid she was pregnant and it wasn't good for at her age to be. I found out the day before her appt that she isn't pregnant, so I was relieved to be able to postpone her surgery until I am recovered from mine and can properly take care of her.

She came to my home first thing the next morning. I was worried about my younger Golden Retriever jumping on her or interfering with her care, but she was absolutely wonderful with both of my dogs. She encouraged him to stay in the room with us once he was comfortable with her, and I truly believe that helped him understand what was happening. She was incredibly professional, but I'll never forget one small moment. Out of the corner of my eye, while I was saying my final words and paying my last tributes to my girl, I saw her quietly wiping tears from her eyes. As a healthcare provider myself, I know how often we're expected to wear a mask and stay composed. Seeing that genuine emotion didn't make her seem less professional, it reassured me that she truly cared. In those final moments, your mind races. You question whether you're making the right decision. Seeing her emotion gave me peace because I knew she wasn't simply going through the motions. I knew that if she believed my girl wasn't ready, she would have told me. Most of us are fortunate enough to experience this kind of heartbreak only a few times in our lives. She carries families through it over and over again. That takes an incredible amount of compassion. Thank you for your kindness, your empathy, and for helping my sweet Lilo leave this world peacefully and with dignity. Please take care of yourself, too. The first photo is the day Oliver met Lilo as a puppy, their first photo together. The second was taken just before the veterinarian arrived to help Lilo pass.
