Yummy! This was our first time ordering and the food was great! We stopped in to try the bubble tea and ordered lunch carry out because we couldn't resist the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. My kids ordered smoothies and fruit teas, but they drank them so fast I couldn't snap a picture. Once we got home everyone shared their dishes and we loved them all. The dumplings were filled with meat, no skimping. Lots of variety in the bento box. All the meats were tender and flavorful. The food tasted fresh, not greasy like some places can be. Order ahead for carry out. They were busy and we had to wait a bit for our food. It was worth the wait though. This will definitely be our new go to spot. read more

And to think this used to be a dental office. I'm always on the lookout for new bubble tea places, which Five Spice fits. Going to the webpage, I was surprised to see that it was something from Silver Lake! We'd always make it a point to eat in at Silver Lake every couple of months or so, although at this point it's been a while. The menu tilts decidedly pan-Asian, which is a risky bet. Since I can't sample everything on the menu, though, I went for something that just sounded good--the Korean Beef Short Rib Bowl. At $17 it's pretty pricey; throw in a $6 bubble tea and you're talking about a $30 lunch. Thing is, they give you enough food to share for two, so the bowl for $8 per person isn't awful. The other thing is, the bowl was so good, I ate it all anyway. It's short ribs on plain steamed rice; with each rib cut super narrow and covered in a super flavorful cornstarch-thickened saucy glaze. The meat itself was beefy and tender. And again, there was plenty of it. Great job. I also picked up a Silky Mango bubble tea, which is mango, uber-creamy goodness, and mango poppin' boba. Whatever the creamy goodness is (milk and... something else?) went perfectly with the mango. I loved it, and I would definitely get another bubble tea from here in the future. The sooner, the better. Restaurant has a lot of different Asian dishes, some of the most popular choices from each cuisine. Walnut shrimp is my favorite. 5 spice beef is good portioned and delicious. Sauce for the clam dish is a bit unexpected, it tasted more like shrimp lobster sauce. Was expecting the string bean to taste like Szechuan style, but was lacking flavor in comparison. After trying restaurants in the city we live in, we noticed that we did not find our favorite Chinese restaurant yet. This restaurant opens at 11:30am for lunch, and we tried 2 lunch set menus this time. Our orders: Broccoli stir-fry Mongolian chicken Jasmin tea cloud cream Brown sugar oolong milk tea Lunch sets come with a fried egg roll, a choice of soup, and chicken fried rice. We chose one egg drop soup and one sweet & sour soup. Egg drop soup was classic. They served what I imagined. Enjoyable, hot, and properly seasoned. Sweet and sour soup was a little too bland for my taste, but to be honest I usually don't choose sweet and sour soup, so I should not say much about it. Egg roll was hot and crispy. Some noodle inside was a surprise and had a good effect for the texture. The dip sauce was fruity sauce (maybe apricot?) and horseradish-y mustard. I liked the mustard one a lot. Good punch in flavor and wakes you up for afternoon activity. But be careful, it is STRONG. If you take too much, it punchers your nose and makes you cry. I loved it! The both entrees came in a large bowl with a bed of chicken fried rice. Mongolian chicken has a spicy soy based flavor. It had a little too much onions more than chicken, but I liked the salty taste. You can choose the spicy level of this bowl from mild, medium or spicy. I chose mild, and it was spicy enough for me. Broccoli stir-fry come with sticky chicken based flavor sauce. It was a gentle flavor but still stands strong against the Mongolian sauce. I like this one slightly better than Mongolian one. Chicken fried rice on the bottom of the bowls were calculated to complement the entrees flavors. It was already mixed with the main flavor, so I cannot taste the rice alone, but I ended up liking the both bowls more after I ate them with the rice. Brown sugar oolong tea has a good bitterness and little sweetness on the bottom. I felt it was a little lacking of brown sugar flavor. It matched well with strong soy flavored sauce though. Jasmin tea cloud cream was more balanced with bitterness and sweetness. And the cloud cream was yummy. It is caffeinated, so good to try in the late morning or early afternoon. We actually came here when it opened a year ago. Back then, I did not write a review because most of our foods were lack of flavors. This time, I liked everything I ate. Constantly more than 4 stars for each item. Probably broccoli stir-fry lunch and horse radish mustard are the meal of the day for me. My total score this time was 4.5 stars. The rice was stale, and tasted weird. bbq pork Fried rice 2/10 despite asking for no mushrooms the kung pao chicken was full of mushrooms. and the other vegetables in the dish didn't taste good, the texture was off like they were frozen and then not cooked thoroughly. kung pao chicken 2/10 the sweet and sour chicken was actually okay, the chicken had good flavor and was cooked well. sweet and sour sauce tasted right. sweet and sour chicken 6/10 regular white rice was also stale. Restaurant visuals were pretty inside, very clean, looked more appealing than the food itself. Gets your hopes up for something better, then you are let down. Service was 5/10 because they didn't remember no mushrooms on the food, but they were friendly and greeted us when we entered. overall they get a 2/10 from me, they could do much better. we ordered during dinner time not right before close, so the food should have been fresh. Price was alright at around 40$ for everything we got. Since most dishes didn't satisfy I give this restaurant 2/10 read more

I personally recommend getting spicey when they ask you mild or spicey - the flavor is there if you get spice with it! My daughter liked her ramen bowl. My other daughter is pretty picky but likes the mild orange chicken (although, once again, it is so much better with a little kick to it). This is a new restaurant when we dined in here. We went to Roselle on a weekend and wanted to eat asian restaurant and found this place. They have plenty of food choices in the menu. They also have the booba tea drinks. Their calamari is good and the soups too. We also tried the crunchy shrimps and the malaysian chow fun which was delicious. Casual customer that would be first to say food is pretty good, but also a tad pricey. However, always had good experiences until tonight. I placed an order online as usual. However, what wasn't the usual was the experience when I walked in. I gave the younger girl my name and she came back with my order. Instead of just giving me my $80 order like usually is the case. She insisted on seeing my order number, even though I already gave her my name which was also printed on the receipt. I literally had to walk out to my car to grab my phone and show her my email order in which she was she hesitant and having attitude. Seriously who else would've showing up for my food with my name!?! Very poor customer service and ridiculous attitude that I'll save my money and 30 minute round trip drive going forward. Sometimes the little things are the big things and customer service is everything. The treatment and lack of respect and appreciation for my business is not ok. So customers beware as you can debate on better food or prices elsewhere, but the customer service sucks!!! read more

We've visited Five Spice Kitchen two times. During our first visit, the dinnerware was clean and the food was okay. The matcha boba latte was terrible. The boba was mushy and expensive ($1 per topping; salty cheese foam is $1.25). The matcha was not mixed well and you could taste the powder throughout the drink. The second visit was gross. Upon being seated on the booths, I saw visible grease, leftover rice, and a sticky substance that was not possible to remove completely with a dry napkin. The adjacent booth seating didn't fare better; there was a house fly crawling all over the greasy, crumb-laden surface. There was also a small fly flying about that later landed on my food. The bathroom actually seemed cleaner than the dining room. The small plates had tiny bits of dried food/sauce throughout. When they brought out the larger dinner plates, they seemed in similar condition as the small plates. I picked up a dinner plate to set it aside (wasn't going to use any of them). Big mistake! As soon as I touched it, I could feel residue underneath the rim. Flipping it over revealed a ghastly sight of dried sauce splattered throughout the underside. Are they only "washing" the top of the plates?!?! Had we not had other circumstances, we would have requested our orders be canceled. We had the Malaysian steak fried rice and Malaysian style chow fun with shrimp, which were $14 and $15, respectively, according to the menu. This is important to note. The entrees came out piping hot (the one upside to this experience) and were generously portioned. The quality reminds me of Joy Yee's-- not bad, but not great-- good if you're hungry. The fried rice was buttery and black peppery. It was strongly seasoned compared to the noodles (not overly so, just contrasting). Many thin strips of steak adorned the top of the heavily seasoned rice. The chow fun sauce was lightly sweet and tangy, slightly reminiscent of ketchup. There were thin omelette-esque sheets of egg, which I liked. The wide rice noodles were terribly thick and often doubled up, making it thicker. There was no bite and little springiness/chew, but with the thickness, it reminded me of Korean rice cakes. The many large shrimp were perfectly cooked, though, like the noodles, not seared. Unfortunately one of the aforementioned small flies ending up landing on a shrimp. The cherry on top of this experience was that they billed us a dollar more for each entrée than what was printed on the menu. At this point, I was beyond ready to leave and just paid the bill. I recommend looking elsewhere for a meal. TLDR: Pros: Generous entrée portions with plenty of protein that come out piping hot. Decent taste. Cons: Dirty dinnerware and seats, flies, prices are more than the menu lists, bad drinks. Also, the pet fish are kept in cylindrical/round tanks, which on top of health detriments, distort the fishes' vision and perception of the outside world, causing more stress. Awful. read more

Tried this place two separate times, hoping that the meal would be better the second time around. It unfortunately was not. My wife and I ordered takeout online. Website said it would take 40-60 minutes, but it was done in 30 minutes. And when we entered, it wasn't too busy. The place has a very chill and inviting vibe. That's where the pros unfortunately end. Our food was incredibly underseasoned. We ordered two tofu dishes (salt and pepper, orange) and some fried rice. All three lacked any semblance of flavor. The salt and pepper tofu was bland with the slightest hint of salt. The sautéed onions and green peppers were the only ingredients to impart any flavor. The orange tofu just tasted like a brown sauce with a hint of ginger and orange. The fried rice was the biggest offender as it was very dry and tasted like absolutely nothing. The scrambled egg mixed in with the rice was the most flavorful thing in the dish. The first time we tried Five Spice, we ordered similar dishes and got basically the same result. We wanted to give this place another try, thinking it was just an off-night. Now it's pretty clear that this is the brand standard and can't justify going back. read more

Stopped here in a Monday afternoon on a whim because the sushi place I wanted to try nearby was closed. The parking lot was empty so so didn't have high hopes but I was starving. I was pleasantly surprised! The dining area was very open and airy. The server was extremely nice and helpful. He recommended a steak friend rice that my friend ordered, it was sooo good! Pros: Restaurant is clean and visually appealing. We placed a carryout order, which was ready on time and correct. Portions were large. My wife got Spicy Umami Miso, which was really good. Cons: The food here is pretty expensive, which based on the large portion size wouldn't bother me if the quality was better. The Pad Thai was absolutely terrible, like microwave-dinner terrible. The sauce tasted like sweet ketchup that had some Thai chili added to it. Way too sweet and lacking any distinctive Thai flavor. The fried rice had absolutely zero flavor, which is strange because I love the fried rice at Silver Lake (the sister restaurant of Five Spice). The crab Rangoon (also a favorite of mine at Silver Lake) would have been good had it not been for the inconsistent amount of filling in each rangoon. Server was nice and polite, when i was ordering the veggie stir fry, she was nice enough to ask if i wanted a regular egg roll or veggie, most places are set lunch menus and dont give you an option, i got regular one anyways cuase im not vegetarian, but i like tofu. Food was decent, just like any chinese place, not bad but also not to die for. 3/5 for food taste overall Egg drop soup- was flavorful, not hard to mess up Egg roll- was great, and done the right way with a hint of peanut butter inside for an authentic taste Veggie stir fry with garlic tofu- was just ok, but lacking on any of the garlic taste and no garlic to be seen. The veggies and tofu seem to be stir fried and made with a light white gravy sauce and was topped over a fried rice that didn't have the wok essence to it so it lacked in the unique flavor and just tasted like gravy rice with veggies and tofu Horchata boba- it does taste like a horchata but i had a couple issues with drinking it. The cinnamon was just put on top and not mixed in so it was hard to get the cinnamon flavor till the end. Second i dont know if it was the boba or the straw, but the boba was stuck in there almost everytime making so much extra effort to try and get one sip, i eventually just scooped out all the boba so i could drink in peace. read more

My wife and I were in the mood for Ramen soup, so we gave this place a try. The soups we had were very tasty and delicious. The location still looks to be new, and I understand the owner used to be in the adjacent strip mall prior to this. My wife also enjoyed their Mango bubble drink. Nicely decorated and delicious food. My friend and I enjoyed jasmine tea, honey walnut shrimp, and szechuan noodles. We had crab Rangoon to start as well. Everything was delicious. We were disappointed in the crab Rangoon. We asked the waitress if there was crab in the Rangoon since it just said green onion and cream cheese on the menu. She said there's imitation crab. We decided we would order it since we would still get a crab taste. However, when we got it, it was just cream cheese and green onion. There was no crab taste to it.
