We absolutely loved working with Five Spice! Mukti and Imelda are amazing chefs - such high quality of food - creative, tasty, and so well presented. We had so many guests come up to us and say our wedding dinner was the best wedding dinner they have ever had. We went with a primarily Indian dinner though with a bit of fusion flare. We had been really focused on not having the typical Indian wedding food - standard fare served in buffet trays with people lining up for food - ugh. So we were determined to find a classy, high quality alternative - and that is what we got from Five Spice. Our food was as 'farm to table' as Indian food can get. It was served family style (except for the salad which was plated) which was a lot of fun. The flavors were amazing, ingredients were super fresh, and presentation was solid. In terms of the cocktail hour, the passed hors d'oeuvres were creative - utilizing not only Indian styles but also other asian inspiration. But everything was elevated. For instance, the samosa was one of the most delicious samosas I have ever had (and I've had a lot of them!). Mukti and Imelda also designed a signature cocktail for us that utilized our favorite ingredients. And last but definitely not least - the desserts were to die for! I don't even have a sweet tooth, but their desserts are exceptional. In terms of the planning process, Five Spice were very responsive and easy to work with. They also worked with our budget and were able to maneuver through our slightly wonky structure of having to go through our venue for rentals, payments, etc. (as our venue typically requires use of their own vendor). They were very flexible in the menu planning process and gave us a lot of ideas to work with. My husband and I would highly recommend Five Spice for a wedding and any other event! read more

I was referred to 5 Spice Catering from the Dumbo Loft where we had our wedding a few weeks ago and they were amazing. Honestly, beyond amazing. We did a lot of our event DIY and had no wedding planner, which worried me how it would all go down, but Mukti (our contact person) worked as the master of ceremonies to keep everyone on time with our schedule, set up our decorations and cleaned up after the event, as well as did a great job with the meal, drinks, and hors d'œuvre. They were completely organized, very detailed, and had great recommendations. Not to mention the food was outstanding and also reasonable / competitively priced. They worked with our budget and it came out a great event. We had about 100 guests that varies from out-of-towners to New Yorker foodies and everyone was beyond complimentary if not floored by how great it was. Seriously, people are still talking about the food and our wedding was 3 weeks ago. Both girls were also very friendly and easy to work with, took suggestions from us and noted things that we liked, but also provided great ideas for the event and meal, as well as sourced food locally so it was fresh. I would recommend them to anyone who is hosting an event or having a dinner party. We will definitely use them in the future / recommend them to anyone looking for a great caterer. read more

Five Spice was recommended to me through a friend. I was the "impromtu" wedding planner for my sister's wedding, she wanted a curated menu with her favorite local vendors from around the city -- they not only were able to do this for us and coordinate everything, but did so much more! They seriously made what seemed impossible at first seem very easy -- pulling together all different types of food into one cohesive dinner -- and the result was that everyone loved the experience. So happy with Five Spice! I would definitely recommend them for someone looking to do something more personalized and less "traditional catering." Mukti and Imelda are awesome. They're fun and easy to get along with, they're passionate about their work, and they deliver. My husband and I were turned off by other wedding caterers because of their "this is the most important day of your life and therefore you must spend all your money" attitude. When we met Mukti and Imelda, we were so relieved and we knew that we wanted to work with them even before the tasting. They worked with our budget, and helped us put together a really tasty and unique menu for our wedding. Because we were so budget conscious, they came up with lots of ways for us to save on costs that I never thought of. We opted for an heavy appetizer menu. The tasting was excellent and it felt more like we were hanging out and eating mad tasty food. After we signed our initial contract, I came up with a lot of last minute changes that they accommodated with no problem. Mukti and Imelda also helped with recommending other vendors for other parts of our wedding, and helped us figure out how we should arrange our lighting and seating and decorations. They were so incredible on the day of the wedding. The food was downright amazing and everyone kept on telling me how delicious it was throughout the night. The staff prepared special plates for my husband and I and hunted us down wherever we were to make sure we got some of the food. Before the wedding even started, a relative had a case of really low blood sugar and wandered into the kitchen and they made him a plate! My friends were in charge of the set up before the wedding and needless to say, it was a bit hectic and could have been planned a little better. Mukti and Imelda's staff were great at handling all our requests during set up and take down-- turn the lights on here, off here, and they also helped with taking down the indoor string lights. The staff remained calm, happy and super helpful the entire time. My decoration plan was to simply put candles in glass jars on all the tables, and the staff added some lovely touches to the decoration with the fall petals and leaves! It was so pretty. Everything came together so perfectly. I am still amazed at the job Mukti and Imelda did- really above and beyond my expectations. read more

Mukti and Imelda from Five Spice made our wedding-planning easy, stress-free, and even fun. When we first spoke, we told them what we were imagining -- both in terms of how we wanted our wedding to look/feel, and how much we wanted to spend -- and they made us feel like they knew exactly what to do in order to make it happen. After our first in-person meeting we walked home utterly confident that the wedding would go well, and that we were in the best hands we could have possibly hoped to be in. During the month or so before the event itself, they were extremely flexible as the number of our guests fluctuated, and super-generous in answering our questions, touching base with the event space manager, and quarterbacking the process of getting all the other vendors (tent rental, liquor, beer, flowers, etc) all on the same page. Sure enough the wedding went off without a hitch. Everyone said the food was great, and we felt the same way. It should be noted that, amid the hustle and bustle of saying hi to everyone etc., it would have been quite easy for the two of us not to eat anything at all -- something Mukti obviously knew from experience in dealing with distracted couples, and helped us avoid by sweetly taking the initiative to make us plates of food and hand-delivering them to us. When my older sister, whose son has nut allergies, asked me to introduce her to the kitchen staff, I took her over to Mukti and Imelda, who were busy making preparations, and they very patiently and cheerfully talked to her about the food they were putting out, and even offered to make her son a special plate. They handled everything beautifully, and the idea of pulling off our wedding without their help fills me with anxiety. You will love working with them. read more

My cousin's wedding was just catered by 5 spice, and they did an UHMAZING job! We had 2 bars with fixed menu of 2 kinds of summer drinks, beer, and champagne. The strawberry lemonade margs were DELISH and all of the bar tenders were super nice. The appetizers included a bread and cheese plate which was wonderfully curated, buffalo chicken meatballs, crab cakes, and few other things that were all delights to the tongue. By the time dinner came around, I had been stuffing my face with apps all evening so I was barely even hungry. Regardless, I still pigged out and indulged in the curry shrimp with quinoa. DELISH! Overall, 5 spice killed it and I would definitely recommend them to cater your next big event. read more

Five Spice is amazing. Our wedding was at the Bell House in Brooklyn, which doesn't offer food, or really have a kitchen. Mukti and Imelda set up in a hallway and somehow managed to cook some of the best food I've ever tasted. We ordered the Southern Comfort (fried chicken) with a lot of appetizers. Everyone raved about the food, and some of my friends actually had contests to see who could eat the most fried chicken. Everything was great, but I especially recommend the bacon-wrapped dates. I can seriously still taste them now. So the food is great, but also, Mukti and Imelda are a pleasure to deal with. They were great about working with us to find a menu that fit our budget, and our meetings with them felt like we were hanging out with friends instead of transacting business. Really, my only complaint about 5 Spice is that they don't own a restaurant, so I don't get to eat their food again unless one of my friends hires them for a wedding. read more

We can't say enough good things about Mukti and Imelda of Five Spice. Their food is really unique -- the kind of food people take notice of, and talk about after the event -- with the sort of delicious strong flavors and attention to detail you rarely see at a wedding. They were patient with us about menu-planning, and thoughtfully incorporated elements of the cuisine of our home countries, as well as various dietary restrictions and requirements. Along with being delicious, everything looked beautiful. Also special about Five Spice is their professionalism. Mukti is an incredibly efficient organizer, but also a kind and thoughtful one. Working with her felt like working with a friend who also happens to be completely competent and dedicated. Their catering staff is made up of the loveliest people, who thoughtfully kept us well fed and hydrated during the wedding and made sure we had spaces to get away to when we got overwhelmed or wanted privacy. Our catering was the major expenditure of our wedding, and we don't regret it. It made everything else come together -- the high quality of service and beautiful presentation made our venue seem even more special, and made the whole day more memorable. We LOVED using Five Spice. They completely won us over with their amazing food and the fact that they were so lovely to work with. I can honestly say that the food was incredible. My husband is still talking about the brisket. They anticipated how busy we would be during the party and had packed us up a little to go meal that we ate later at our hotel -- it was perfect! Our guests all loved the food as well. We were a little concerned about aesthetics, using a raw loft space, and Mukti and Imelda made such a gorgeous presentation I felt like it really added to the ambiance. They listened to everything and are so detail oriented! We had a winter wedding and they made a delicious menu of comfort foods. They went above and beyond on everything. We were feeling overwhelmed with all the last minute details and I really don't think I worried about anything with regard to the food. They took care of everything and it was even better than we had anticipated. Very smooth, and they were upfront about everything and worked with our budget without making us feel uncomfortable about anything. The waitstaff was great, very courteous and professional. I hired them for a 250 person fashion event, didn't have much of a budget and they not only met my expectations but became a key element that contributed to its success. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Mukti and Imelda. My husband and I opted to plan and execute our wedding by ourselves. We asked our venue, The Greenpoint Loft, for a list of vendors they'd worked with before. Five Spice was among them. We were attracted by their website, which presented them as warm, capable, and unique. When I inquired about their services, we immediately got an individualized response from Mukti. We set up our tasting immediately. The tasting was so much fun, elegant, and incredibly tasty. We knew immediately that we wanted to work with Five Spice. From there on out, planning with Mukti and Imelda was easy. In fact, if it weren't for these ladies and their awesome team, I am sure my wedding wouldn't have gone as smoothly as it did! They helped me with menu selection, accommodated for the three guests at my wedding who had serious allergies, helped me put together a day-of schedule, arranged for me to meet with someone regarding rentals for the wedding and most importantly provided me with answers to all my questions and awesome support. On the day of the wedding, their team came in and seamlessly blended with mine to make the day a total success. Their staff was lovely and the food was incredible. Many of my guests remarked that they had never met such an awesome catering staff nor tasted such wonderful food at a wedding. They even made sure that my husband and I ate throughout the night; they prepared and directly brought us plates of food. We were very grateful. Five Spice is truly one of a kind. Weeks prior to my daughter's wedding friends would sympathetically say,"You must be so nervous." However, unlike many other mothers of the bride, I never was. My daughter had the good fortune to find the team of Mukti and Imelda of Five Spice Catering. From the moment we were warmly welcomed into Imelda's dining room for a bountiful spread of delicious dinner choices until our wistful goodbye hugs with the women of Five Spice Catering at the end of the wedding my family and I couldn't have been more pleased with the attentive care they gave us. We also used her as a wedding planner and she was organized, congenial, diligent and exceedingly attentive to detail. Every couple of weeks there would be a conference call with the bride, the groom, my husband , me, and Mukti to keep us on top of all the details to be arranged. As a result the wedding progressed effortlessly, no doubt due to the hard work on Mukti's and Imelda's part. All the pre-planning gave everyone a relaxed and jubilant celebration. My twenty-something nephew remarked that he couldn't believe how delicious the food was. He said his meal was different from dinners he had been served at other weddings. The fish, chicken, side dishes and desserts we had chosen for our menu were closer to what one would expect to be served in a fine restaurant. We couldn't agree more. My niece had brought her 10 year old son to the wedding. Mukti made sure he was supplied with plenty of kid friendly food while everyone else was enjoying hors d'oeuvres and drinks. This will give you an idea of some of the lengths Mukti went to to keep our guests happy throughout the evening. From the first meeting with Mukti and Imelda we knew that we had made the right choice. They were both very attentive and super professional. Five Spice catering offered great insight into our options, menus, settings, etc. To work with them was not only a great experience, it was an amazing journey. We wanted a russian-mexican theme to reflect our heritage but also wanted to have an elegant and intimate evening. The day of the tasting we got blown away by the menu. It was such a fun night. The menu design was so original. Also what I thought was exceptional was that Five Spice uses only the best, hand picked, local, farmers market, organic, high quality produce. This shows the level of love and passion they have for their trade. The days leading up to the wedding Five Spice were incredibly attentive, answered all of our questions, offered advice and made sure all went according to plan. The night of the wedding it all came together. Absolutely stunning. The food, just like the tasting, was outstanding and with a few additional items that we had not tried - and it was all so good! What was also amazing was the service. The servers, bartender and cooks provided superb service, great professionalism and were incredibly attentive. It was a signature touch. Our guests had an incredible experience. To this day, when people talk about our wedding, the first thing that they say is that the food was incredible and the service world class. We worked with Five Spice for our wedding at the Dumbo Loft. It was clear during the planning phase that food was the most important aspect of the wedding for us. Calling them caterers evokes the wrong images - this is a fine dining experience at your own wedding. Every dish was designed and prepared with thoughtfulness and care, and from appetizers to dessert, the food was phenomenal. Honestly, the meal at our wedding was by far the best that I've had at any wedding and it is the first thing our guests talk about when we see them. One of our foodie guests even went into the kitchen to ask the cooks how they prepared one of the dishes. Mukti and Imelda are quite the duo; highly complementary and very sweet. While both are involved throughout the process, Mukti leads on the business end and Imelda leads on the menu and in the kitchen. After speaking with other wedding caterers, talking with Mukti was a breath of fresh air - there's no hard sell, no fake deadlines and no exploding discounts. She always volunteered her honest opinion on what she thought would work and what wouldn't. Also she's really organized and kept me sane during the final days leading up to the wedding. From signing the contract through making last minute changes, Mukti was highly transparent on costs. She was also happy to brainstorm with me on how to cut back on non-essential areas (that conversation was painful with other caterers). Imelda was also amazing to work with and helped to curate our random assortment of ideas for the menu into a balanced, delicious ensemble. Throughout the process they both felt more like close friends than vendors. They will make you feel totally comfortable during a often stressful time. Other highlights from our experience: -- The hardest thing to do during your own wedding is to sit still long enough to enjoy the amazing dishes. To that end Mukti and Imelda brought us plates to sample the appetizers during the cocktail hour and after we walked around to speak with guests during dinner, they brought us fresh plates so we could enjoy. They will track you down to make sure you eat! -- We went back and forth on whether to use their dessert bar and are so happy we did. The depth and variety of treats was an excellent way to round out the night. Highly recommended -- Mukti provided invaluable advice for floorplan layout. We initially had a different idea for table placements and she gently guided us to a superior option of where to have the ceremony. In retrospect this made a huge difference to the flow of the party, and a lesser caterer may just tell you what you want to hear -- Five Spice does not require you to hire an expensive day of planner as part of their package (although that is an option if you want). It will require some more work on your end (or your friends!), but can save you a ton of money. This was not an option with other caterers we looked at. -- Their staff was amazing. Literally no complaints from any of our guests and they handled special requests throughout the night Mukti and Imelda were such a pleasure to work with that we wish we had another reason to hire them again. Instead we're both actively convincing our friends to use Five Spice for their weddings just so we can enjoy more of their delicious creations. read more

We found out about Five Spice through a recommendation from another caterer that was booked on the day of our event and we were both very pleased with them. We had our wedding at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, which is not a traditional wedding venue. We chose to have a non-seated cocktail reception with passed hors d'oeuvres. We had our ceremony and reception in the same location. Post ceremony the guests were escorted to a mezzanine level bar area where there were stations of meats, cheeses, and spiced nuts, which they could enjoy with their cocktails. Meanwhile, the catering crew broke down all the chairs from the reception. Within minutes the space was ready for dancing. We had a band perform 2 short sets and a DJ in between. About an hour into the reception, the hot food was being passed around. We had 2 vegetarian options: Quesadillas and Tomato and Eggplant Bruschetta, that were both very tasty, and 3 meat options: Crab Cakes, Meatball lollipops, and Fried Chicken Lollipops. All of our guests enjoyed the food very much. The best part was that the service was efficient--no one was hungry and I hardly noticed the wait staff around, but there was always food. I think Mukti and Imelda did a tremendous job. We were both very happy with them. They did a special tasting dinner with us, where we tried a selection of their specialties and set up a final menu. What I like most about them, is that while making "traditional food", they put a multi-cultural spin on it, adding unexpected spices, which really made all the food taste amazing. They were willing to work with our budget, which was on the low end for New York and tailored the menu to meet our needs. They were courteous, helpful and very eager to come up with whatever solution necessary to make our day special. read more

We had Five Spices cater our commitment ceremony at the DUMBO Loft and they did a tremendous job. Our priority was really excellent food and Mukti and Immelda won us over with a tasting. To be precise, it was Mukti's grandmother's recipe for samosas that got us - the best samosas we ever had. Every dish Five Spices prepared for our event was absolutely delicious. True to their name, they don't hold back on the spice - which suited us fine. We had a falafel station and a charcuterie station and a lot of passed hors d'oeuvres - my favorite of which were black bean burger sliders served as a late night snack after dessert. I enjoyed the creativity that Five Spices brought to the table. They really took the time to listen to our Ideas and also come up with fun, interesting things that we wouldn't have thought of (like the late night snack). There were a lot of little touches that made the night feel truly unique - probably more so than we would have gotten with one of the bigger catering companies. It was important to us that the catering not feel too formal and the staff did a great job of being friendly but not obtrusive. They also did a great job facilitating the whole event. We had a ceremony in the space with 125 chairs in rows and then took the party down to the river for sunset and when the party came back, the space was "magically" transformed for dinner and dancing. And they also went out of their way to make sure that we (my partner and I) didn't have to worry about any of the details once the evening began. I've been meaning to write this review for a while. We had our wedding catered by Five Spice Catering in November 2012 at the DUMBO Loft. Mukti and Imelda were fantastic. They put together an amazing seasonal menu of brisket, mac n cheese, vegetable tian, and more. We still think about how delicious the food was. Our guests were very pleased as well. Mukti and Imelda were also extremely helpful through the planning process. They have worked at the Dumbo Loft and knew the space well. We did not hire a wedding planner, and having Mukti's help, we never felt like we needed to. Highly recommend! read more
