I've been coming here for years now.My initial reasoning was just that they were conveniently in my office building, and others in my office seemed to like them well enough. It's probably been 8ish years now. I no longer work in that building--I work from home, 30 minutes away from Five Pines, and I happily make the commute. Everyone here is wonderful: communicative, attentive, thoughtful. I've done cleanings, aligners, a night guard, all of it. I have problems with TMJ pain: they remember and proactively ask if I need a break from opening my mouth or a bite block to help. With my night guard, when it wasn't helping, Dr Z went above and beyond to try and see if he could modify it to help more. Anthony cleans my teeth and we never miss a chance to catch up on video games between scrapes of the teeth. Katie checks in over text if anything is going on with my latest sets of aligners. Most importantly, everyone is just so personable and awesome. I do not think you'll be uncomfortable here. I swear, they did not pay me for this or give me free toothbrushes for life or anything. I had my 1st visit at this dental office, and they are going to be my dentist from here on out. The office itself is warm and welcoming, as are the front desk staff. There were quirky "quick read" books in the waiting room, and they offered me water while I waited. The Dental assistant was so thoughtful and patient as well. The dentist I saw was Dr. Marissa Medina, and she was really impressive! She explained everything on my X-rays, and made great recommendations for a treatment plan. I would leave 0 if I could - I never write reviews but this one has to be seen - the operation in this facility is disrespectful, discriminatory and outright bad service. I started my service here a year ago and never heard back from them for 4 months in regards to what my insurance was willing to pay. Honestly the front desk people would laugh, and talk about clients openly in the front and in my situation when I called back to see what was the determination from my insurance they joked about my care over the phone with someone else at the front desk. I was assured that these two individuals were let go and that wouldn't be an issue again and so I called today to set up an appointment. The office manager was extremely dismissive and said "based on the tone of this call, I'm going to make the determination that we aren't the best fit for each other." Then signed off with sarcasm. Honestly wasn't asking for much but to have a free examination due to the previous experience and that I already had an examination done at this location. I've never had a front desk person/manager turn down an appointment and for nothing disrespectful. I think this is the worst service I've ever received so many better places nearby, and they are constantly hounding people to leave reviews. I held off on writing this review because I thought I was still going to have care here, thank goodness I found a better place with better service - do your research, tons of red flags! read more

You can tell by the fancy office that patient care is ranked low on their list of priorities. Save your time, money and teeth the headache and go elsewhere! You've been warned. read more

I had a really traumatic experience here getting a crown with Dr. Collins that resulted in me getting a second opinion and then having to get an emergency root canal. A few weeks ago, I went in for a routine check up and Dr. Collins said I had a minor fracture in my tooth and that I should get a crown. The tooth wasn't bothering me but she said that if I waited, I would need a root canal down the line. I opted to get the crown. The first appointment, we did crown prep and a temporary crown. I had lingering pain for a week, which they said would go away with the permanent. I trusted that and waited. Finally, I went in for the permanent crown. The experience was the worst experience I have ever had. I described the pain and they said the tooth looked normal and again said it would go away. Once they took the temporary crown off, my pain shot to a 10/10. They didn't numb me before and when I was literally crying in pain, they started giving me shots around the tooth, which did nothing at the point. They said since I was anxious at this point, they didn't want to give me a block shot with epinephrine because it could trigger a panic attack. I ended up having one anyways from being in 10/10 pain. They just kept pushing forward and saying it's almost done. When they placed the permanent, the pain got even worse and I was sobbing. Dr Collins then excused herself, saying she needed a minute and left me there for 10 minutes in so much pain. When she came back, she said she's never seen it hurt like this before and it was unusual. After the permanent was on, she THEN became interested in the pain I was having before and said it sounded like I might need a root canal later. This is AFTER the permanent was on. How did I go from having no pain before coming to the dentist to the worst pain? She again said the pain should go away and sent me home. For two week, the pain got worse and worse. The places where Dr Collins had given me shots were super bruised and painful. I ended up getting a second opinion at a different dentist and they said it looked like there was some trauma to my gums at the injection sites. They said that likely due to heavy handed prep work from Dr Collins, the root of my tooth was dying and I need a root canal asap. I ended up getting a root canal and feel SO much better now. The dentist I ended up switching to, as well as the endodontist for the RC were both excellent, caring, and made sure I was very numb. Do not go to Dr. Collins for a crown. She doesn't listen to your concerns and is very bad if you have dental anxiety. She will also cost you much more money than you need to spend. I regret going here so much and sad that I lived in so much pain for a month. read more

I had my first visit here yesterday. The practice is very well located in downtown Portland. The are numerous treatment rooms and two dentists. I was seen by Dr. Collins who conducted a very in-depth assessment of my teeth and gums. Dr. Collins assistant, Ava, was also very helpful and friendly. Together, they gave me many opportunities to share any concerns I might have. A full set of x-rays were taken, and an appointment for a tooth cleaning set-up. Also, they accept my insurance plan with Cigna. I'm very satisfied! read more

I called Five Pines dental as a new patient because my dentist closed, and asked about COVID precautions because I'm highly immunocompromised. I was told that there'd be a $14 charge for clinicians to wear KN95s, I guess the staff doesn't normally mask, and clinicians wear surgical masks, which don't prevent COVID transmission (per the CDC). Yes, the emergency declaration is "over" but COVID transmission isn't, and these accommodations existed before COVID for people on chemo or immune suppressing drugs. You can't charge people for it, it's an ADA violation. Despite that, the staff yelled at me when I asked about it. It's not like they charge for coffee or interpreters or parking spaces- same thing here. They're not even wearing N95s, just cheaper versions, which cost less than $1. Charging sick people for this is gross (and illegal) and yelling at patients is gross, it doesn't meet standard of care, and you should go elsewhere. read more

Love coming to Five Pines. Their office is clean and modern, and their equipment is all new looking stuff. My hygienist Stephanie is great and really knows her stuff -- I enjoy chatting with her and she doesn't hesitate to indulge me when I ask inquisitive questions about teeth and tooth care. Dr Zeller is also super friendly and seems to know his stuff. As a millennial I like that he is one too! Maybe that's because my dentist growing up was this very old man named Dr Pain. Okay it was probably spelled Payne but bad name for a dentist, right? (He was nice though) I never feel pressured into getting add-on services or equipment here and in fact I don't think that's ever come up. They have great little swag bags as well. Wrote me up for every filling (about 4) that I have: said that they were cracked and needed to be replaced. Wrote me up for every crown that I have (about three): said they were bad and needed to be replaced. Said I need root canal on a tooth that already had root canal done. I just went to Willamette Dental and was told I do not need any of that. Willamette Dental told me that only one filling could be fixed but it was optional, not really needed. No need for root canal because that tooth is completely rotten and needs an implant. Five pines would have charged me for root canal then said, "sorry it did not help. You need implant". Maximize your profit from unneeded work. Advertised $180.00 for cleaning, but demanded $300.00 or such after cleaning, but I showed them the printout of their own ad. In other words, they wish they could install filling and crowns on every healthy tooth that you have but are afraid of legal action, so they pick only teeth that already have good fillings, good crowns, etc. read more

Today was my first visit to Five Pines dental. It was a great experience. I could tell when I first called them to schedule the appointment that this was not a stressed out or rushed staff. They also contacted my insurance to confirm what my coverage included. Therefore no surprise co pays. After I scheduled my appointment, they emailed me the paperwork I would need to complete. I was able to fill these out neatly and quickly. I would not need to complete paperwork at the office. Yay. The office itself is modern, clean and comfortable. The patient rooms are separated by doors and walls so each patient is in their private space. The staff and dentist wear double masks. Parking under the building is safe and paid for by Five Pines. Anthony was knowledgeable and friendly and did a great job at cleaning my teeth as well as taking my digital X-rays. He told me what he was doing to my teeth during the cleaning as well as what he was noticing about my teeth as he was examining them, which told me he had actually read the information I detailed on my paperwork about my previous negative dental experiences as well as what would make me feel more comfortable during my appointments. Thank you Anthony. Dr. Zeller is also friendly and welcoming. He also commented on my detailed notes which made me feel important as to how they will care for my dental needs. I sensed he was as interested in my healthcare as I am. I'm thankful I didn't need any other dental care today but eventually I'm certain I will and I feel confident he'll be caring, knowledgeable and professional. Before I left I spent a few minutes with the billing specialist who gave me all his attention and ensured I would know exactly what my insurance would cover for my next appointment and sent a pre authorization request to my insurance to make me feel confident there would be no surprise co pays. Dr Zeller and his staff with whom I interacted should serve as role models for how a Dental practice should operate. Bravo. read more

I've been to many dentists because I've lived in several cities. Dr. Zeller is among the best. He is thorough and kind and runs a great operation! Everyone in the office was wonderful. The facilities are clean and it's so nice to get your own room - each with its own air purifier. I've been using Five Pines for a few years now, and I'm very happy. The cleanings are as pleasant as possible, and without the pain I used to always have during a dentist appointment at other places. I appreciate how straightforward and down to earth the staff are. Very peaceful environment, straight-talking hygienists and dentists, and heated massage chairs which make me feel a lot more calm during my cleanings. Recently moved to Portland so gave Five Pines a shot after a recommendation from a co-worker. The staff were nice and the office is well-decorated. Unfortunately, a good dental office does not rely solely on the presence of massage chairs and friendly staff. I did not have any pain or toothaches prior to coming here, but after a routine cleaning followed by a recommended re-filling, I now have cold sensitivity and pain with chewing in multiple places. read more

To those with dental anxiety or a fear of the dentist, say no more Fam: Five Pines? More like Five Stars. This place is seriously phenomenal. I have had a plethora of awful dentists in my time. I think we all know what I'm talking about. Constant guilt, "why don't you just floss" or the "keep this up (only flossing a few days a week) and your teeth are gonna fall out" sort of scare tactics and vibes. The awful "TERRORS OF GINGIVITIS" posters and crest ad campaigns plastered on the walls as this passive aggressive "I'm not mad I'm disappointed" figure digs and scrapes your teeth and tells you to "suck it up" yeah, I honestly can't stand most dentists. NOT THE CASE HERE. Immediately when you enter you feel an overwhelming sense of calm. The receptionist quietly and calmly greets you, as you are then directed to sit in the waiting room. The art on the walls is phenomenal, as well as all the reading material. The music played at the office is a calming indie variety that would even send the most hipstery hipster in Portland into a state of zen. Finally, the oral hygienists and the doctors are incredible. Never have I ever encountered such patient and patient centric individuals. "Let me know if this hurts, okay?" and "Whatever we can do to make you more comfortable" should be their catch phrase at this point. You can tell the staff and doctor really care about your experience. Their billing specialist/staff is also extremely friendly and they have a variety of ways to pay, even specials for those who aren't insured. Which is incredible in and of itself. I thank the heavens that I was recommended by a colleague this dentist, because my overall health and dental hygiene have already vastly improved. I legitimately look forward to going to the dentist now, because instead of seeing it as an obligatory routine, I now see it as a form of self-care. Thank you so much, everyone at Five Pines. Ok, so I've had a few different dentists in my life after moving around a bit. I won't lie and say I've seen bad dentists, but I've been to some real mediocre places, and I've been to some nicer places. Five Pines Dental is superb. Their office is spectacularly clean, and very relaxing due to all the natural wood (can you believe Dr. Zeller did all of the woodwork??). The staff couldn't have been nicer, even playing along with my little "preferred name" joke (Lord Bumbleberry-- stupid, but they thought it was funny). Their implementation of COVID-19 precautions was amongst the best I've seen, so you can be confident that you will be safe there as long as you stick to the guidelines and give other patients their space (easy to do with their social distance floor markers). Zeller was kind and compassionate, just like everyone else on the staff. Overall, it was an excellent experience! read more

The office staff confirmed my insurance beforehand so there wasn't any surprises, and I got texted reminders before the appointment and a covid check in.
