CARIBE Restaurant - Schenectady, NY…read more I've had the chance to visit CARIBE twice now, and both times were for birthday celebrations. This is a cute Caribbean/Dominican restaurant with a casual order-at-the-counter setup and dine in- gives off a welcoming island vibe. The restaurant was clean, colorful, and full of Dominican flair. Both visits started with the Dominican Appetizer Platter, which in my opinion is perfect for sharing between 2-3 people depending on how hungry everyone is. It comes loaded with sweet plantains, crispy fried plantains, chicharrón, fried chicken tenders, fried cheese, salami, tostones, and French fries. If you're a fry lover, don't skip these! On my first visit, we ordered the pork chops and the pernil. The pernil was delicious--juicy, flavorful, and with the crispy top!! that my friend absolutely loved. The second time around, we both went with steak. I ordered the Bistec Salteado (sautéed steak) medium, while my friend ordered the grilled steak. Unfortunately, my steak came out well done. When I mentioned it, I was told that's how it's traditionally prepared Dominican-style. Needless to say, I wasn't happy and ended up not eating much of it. I did try my friend's grilled steak, and it was much better (for my taste). The birthday girl ordered the seafood rice and really enjoyed it. It was packed with seafood--definitely a dish for seafood lovers! For her birthday she got a choice of dessert and got the Flan- and a island girly her self she critiqued and loved!! Next time I'm in the area, I think I'll skip the entrées and order à la carte so I can sample more of the sides and appetizers. Overall, the food was good, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The steak was a miss for me, but everything else was enjoyable enough that I'd return to try more of the menu.

It's no way the same chef cooked my order last night. Jerk salmon, brown stew kingfish and shrimp rasta pasta. Got a few sides and it came to $80. Worst $80 I've ever spent at a Jamaican spot. Everything was terrible... Don't know what happened to this joint but you can only skin a sheep once.

The place offers takeout, on-demand delivery service, and a spacious dining area to the left behind wooden gate. Since it was a Saturday, I decided to order the Shrimp Rasta Pasta ($16.99 plus tax) since they make it to order and on Fridays and Saturdays too. I took a seat in the dining area as I waited for about 12 minutes when my food was bagged and ready. This pasta dish is an Italian-Jamaican fusion dish, which was served very hot in a round foil container, a good portion with penne pasta in a spicy cream sauce with bell peppers, seasonings & spices and tender shrimp (cleaned). It was about the size of two meals which I enjoyed over two evenings for dinner. I would definitely order rasta pasta again and I would try their Red Snapper (Escovitch Fish), Jerk Chicken and Meat Patties too.

Food... hot dang it was off the scale and should be illegal to be that good. I mean man, I ordered fried chicken, mac and cheese, yams and collards 2 sides and corn bread come with the meal. It was TO DIE FOR!!! Seasoned to perfection and very good portions for the price. I recommend anyone who loves soul food go and visit Aunt Ronnie. This is truly authentic soul food and the very best in Schenectady.

Don't let whatever was keeping me away keep you away as well. My daughter, man and I have a thing when we try new soul food and Caribbean restaurants. We start by always trying the "basics" and if you pass them we'll move along your menu. In total we've taken out 3 times...here's the lowdown: Macaroni and Cheese = WINNER!: Lots of sharp cheese with great flavor. BBQ Ribs = Good: Meaty and tasty but the sauce is jarred and not homemade Fried Chicken = Good: Moist and tasty Greens = Not my fav but edible Candy Yam = Good: and we were surprised because they are canned but somebody back there doctored them things up professional style! Curry Chicken = Good: Just note this is American curry style. If you want the traditional Indian or Caribbean style go someplace else. Fried Fish = Pass!: Not particularly flavorful and I don't like cornmeal on my fish Mac Salad = OK: unremarkable but I don't think anyone would say it was bad Baked beans = WINNER: one thing to note is it has meat in it so if you don't eat red meat this is a pass. last but not least folks there are really friendly
