i think norwegians are very polite and do not seem to be critical of the quality of food or the price they all spend to enjoy it. i have traveled to oslo and this country many times and have always been surprise and saddened about the quality and limited choices of food in this country. oslo is their biggest town and it has more diversity than any other place in the country. one would think that diversity would translate into a higher variety and quality of food. not so much!!! i have yet to eat or meet anyone that i would consider a serious foodie in this country. the selection in the market is dismal because there is only 2 companies that control what everyone eats or buys in the shop. the quality and selection is still very limited but i know that most norwegians think its great. if you compare this place to the north pole, then its awesome!
this Fiskeriet is a prime example of what i have experienced in norway. this place has an actual fish market and a small restaurant attached. its charming, clean, polite and nice looking. it has the potential to be something really great because of the fresh fish selection they sell. instead, it is no more than a generic so so seafood place that i could get anywhere in California. this was suppose to be a reasonable place for other reviewers. totally nuts!!!
the difference in price for fish and chips to eat there was 199kr and to go was 99kr, i thought it was insane. i also ordered the fish soup and it resembled a watery fish chowder, for 129kr. it was no bigger than a medium cup. the fish and chips had a very greasy batter and the fries were nothing special. it was one small piece of fish and the size of a medium fries for 99kr, about US$14. it was just greasy, tasteless and i had to bathe it with ketchup to make it tolerable. we took it to go and ate it in the hall located right inside the building. the soup was so watery and short of any iflavor. it tasted as if the cook/chef did not care or tasted the finished product. both dishes had fresh fish but no flavor what so ever. they could have used some Old Bay Seasoning, cream, leek, celery and shallots to add some content into the soup.
i have tried so hard to tolerate the crazy prices of dining in norway in my search for some great or just decent food. i have yet to find it. i would love to see some decent chefs and investors from the US to come here and raise the bar of good or fine dining to norwegians. i know norwegians have the money but have not experienced great food to know that this place is just very, very average. read more
