Came here with a big group (40-45 people) for Group Campsite A this past weekend (Friday check in…read morethrough Sunday check out). Plenty of picnic tables and plenty of space for our tents in the shade. Plenty of parking as well. We also reserved Group Campsite B because we thought we needed more space, but we didn't end up needing it. However, Group Campsite B has its own parking spots (can fit 6 cars comfortably I believe) which was good use for us for our friends who came on Saturday when it was packed with two different baptisms and other day use overflow. Group Campsite A didn't have its own parking and could only park at the overnight/overflow lot, which was fine for those of us that came on Friday when it was empty. Group Campsite A is more secluded/private and has outlets as well. Group Campsite B didn't have much shade and was next to the other campsites. The bathrooms nearest the group campsites got pretty gross by the end of the day with all the day use people using it as well, but they were cleaned every morning. There was another bathroom at the other end of the park near the rest of the campsites, but didn't feel the need to go to them. Park Rangers also made a point to come by and get trash every morning as well and collected them from us at the river! There was a big dumpster near Campsite A that we could walk to as well. The river was close by. Campsite A had a lot of shade and we didn't even need our EZ-Ups. We brought them down to the river instead. There were coin showers (25 cents per minute and minimum of 2 minutes required each time). It was really hot Friday evening through Saturday morning and a TON of bugs, but Saturday there was a nice breeze and no more bugs. Saturday night got really cold into Sunday morning. Will definitely be coming back here in the future for more big group camping!

When we…read morechecked in, our campsite was filthy, with trash scattered throughout the site and the fire pit completely full of garbage. After I called, someone came by and did a light cleanup, which I appreciated, but the site should have been clean before our arrival. The biggest issue was the flies and gnats. From morning until sunset, we were constantly swarmed. It made it nearly impossible to relax or enjoy being outside. The overflowing trash cans throughout the campground certainly didn't help and likely contributed to the problem. The bathrooms were also in poor condition. The showers (which require quarters, so come prepared) had dirt, hair, and grime, and the restrooms were dirty with spiders, toilet paper all over the floors, and generally felt neglected. Our kids did enjoy playing in the river, but it had a noticeable sewer-like odor. At night, there was also a very loud machine-like noise that made it difficult to enjoy the peaceful camping experience we expected. Overall, this was not an enjoyable trip, and unfortunately we won't be returning.

The hike was about less than 30m around the reservoir; it was beautiful, and we got to see plenty of wild flowers and cherry blossom. There are plenty of parking spaces and some picnic benches. The water was great and there was a great breeze. We stopped at the marina store to get ice and then took a ride over to the other side of the lake to the Cafe. The food was great and decent priced. The staff was a bit over whelmed. The cashier at the back register seemed irritated with the kids looking at stuff near the counter and shut her register down. The crowd waiting for their food before us didnt get the right order, they had to remake their food and they told the girls prepping the food that the girl that took their order wasnt paying attention and wrote the order down wrong. Overall the food was good, the deck hands were friendly and we enjoyed the time on the lake.

However, through the years, the neglect of this park is starting to show dramatically. Roads are torn up, overgrown trees oftentimes scratch RVs and way too many stray cats. Our last two visits with friends were ruined due to faulty electrical equipment but worst of all sewage backup into the camp site. This is unacceptable but more importantly, pretty sure the health department would find this to be in several violations. We would be so disappointed to have to stop coming here but these issues are happening at different sites, not sure we want to be part of a crap shoot. SJ Parks department, please do better for your customers. UPDATE: Someone came and sprayed the area. All he accomplished was to spread the sewage leak to a bigger area of the campsite. EWWWWW

The Waterfowl Management Area located at 18110 Henry Miller Avenue, on the left, one can't miss it,…read morealthough it's blessedly unlikely that anyone will be in office to greet you, though there are portable restroom accommodations, is in my opinion, the rarest and most precious part of the wildlife refuge complex, one of the nation's true, understated, and relatively unknown treasures. Los Banos, advertises itself as "the crossroads of California". Exactly what is crossing there and from where I have yet to figure out. To my eye, it's a generally hotter than blazes agricultural area far, far to the east of Monterrey, far, far to the north of Fresno, and far enough from the Sierras to the east, and south enough of the endless wastelands of Stanislaus County, as to be somewhere out in the middle of the crossroads of nowhere. There is housing for ag workers, planters and harvesters, who sought a better life in el norte, and found what we got, and religiously send checks home to their families. One thinks that rent might be reasonable here. Follow 165 north of Los Banos only a little past (maybe a few miles) the intersection with 33 and, Henry Miller Drive comes up on your right. That being said, the waterfowl refuge is a lonely place, and a certain pathos accrues with that feeling. The area is comprised of a series of interconnected canals, and the regularity of these, the symmetry and almost manicured clean lines of the shores which indicate the involvement of humanity. The park is dedicated to the preservation of the remarkably intricate and refined habitat, the wetlands. Dawn and sunset are simply magnificent. Look hard and many species of bird life will be revealed to you. Absolutely, bring binoculars. I was particularly fortunate to be able to observe a flock or large family of egrets, and to be able to meditate on much else, within, and somewhat beyond cognition, in these turbulent times, inspired by this rare environment.
