See a group clustered on the boardwalk all peering in the same direction? Just ask and you'll learn what they've heard or spotted and even get help getting a glimpse. For my very first spring as a birder in general, I had so much fun adding so many new birds to my life list! The trail is short but action packed, and located right against Lake Erie for a beautiful, more spacious (less crowded) beach view too, before or after the boardwalk walk!

Everyone is always super friendly and very helpful to someone like me who is a brand new birder. You will see a huge variety of warblers as well as eagles, look for the nest! There's also a spot at one end that runs along a small body of water so keep an eye out for green herons and other shore birds. There's a lot to do in this area so plan on going to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge as well as Howard Marsh. Note, the only bathroom is a porta potty. Go and have fun and hopefully add to your life list!!!

This is another great National Parks site, and it has a wonderful location right in Put-in-Bay…read more There's a nice visitor's center with a great little exhibit space and a room where you can watch the site's 15 minute film that explains what happened in Perry's famous battle, the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, and why it was so important. The memorial is a nice walk from the center and requires paid timed tickets to enter and go to the top. It's open air once you get up there and, on a clear day, you can see miles around and get great views. The memorial itself is the largest Doric column in the world, and they had binoculars available to borrow at the top - with wipes to clean between uses. The rangers were friendly and very informative. We were also fortunate to see some costumed performers demonstrate how to use historic weapons - I think next time we'd ask in advance for the schedule, but the weapons are not quiet and caught our attention pretty quickly! "Don't give up the ship!"

Perry's monument is a giant 300-foot tall dangus that sticks up out of the middle of Put In Bay island. It's a memorial to a bunch of stuff from the war of 1812, but it's really just a nice location to feel the breeze and look at the lake and sit in the shade of the giant concrete dongus. If it were open, one could ride up and down in it, but it's still a peaceful area. There is a visitors center too for those of you into reading and learning about stuff.

Marblehead Lighthouse State Park is a great spot for a relaxing and scenic visit along Lake Erie…read more We went last weekend and were able to tour the lighthouse, which was definitely worth it. Admission was $5 per person, and kids 5 and under were free. The volunteers were friendly and shared a brief but interesting history of the lighthouse and how it's been used over the years. Once inside, be ready for a bit of a climb as there are 77 narrow spiral steps leading up to an outdoor observation area. The view is worth it to see beautiful sights of Lake Erie. Even if it's not that clear of a day, you can still see Cedar Point and the Lake Erie islands in the distance. The park itself is very well maintained and offers easy access to the shoreline while still feeling safe and family-friendly. It's a peaceful place to sit, relax, and enjoy the lake breeze and sounds. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

On this particular morning at 6:30 am it was just us and the seagulls. It is also nice to take a break from Cedar Point when it gets crowded in the afternoon, and walking on the beach is our favorite way to relax. This is not a well developed park spot, but more of a local municipal beach for the residents. There is a small entrance to drive in and a beautiful shaded parking lot right next to the sand so you can drive up and step right onto the beach. There was even a lemonade food truck parked there. Woot! nice The geography is fascinating here due to the nautical entrance from the US to Canada. There is a canal where boats float in and register with customs. Watching the boat traffic in and out is fun! The beach is large and deep as well with tons of room, but not much for shade after you leave the parking area. The water looked ok and fairly clean but check the swimming reports in the area before jumping in, as all the beaches in the area are prone to warnings and closures occasionally.
