Well, what can I say - I've toured a lot of towns and cities in the USA and I'm a huge fan of the dive bar. This place is the closest thing to a beach / dive bar I've found in the UK, just sadly missing a bit of the dive as it was well lit, clean and my shoes didn't stick to the floor. You can bring your own dive by visiting on a wet and windy day and trying to eat outside if you're desperate though :) The range of food on the menu isn't massive, but what they do do, they do do well. Everything that the three of us in my party had there (on both visits) was great. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the beers were cold. The cocktails were excellent - visiting from London, I wasn't sure what to make of the 'liquid to ice' ratio - I'm used to a cocktail being mostly ice with a dash of £10 spirit over the top, but these ... these were cocktails that you could actually drink instead of sucking on! The view is spectacular too. Depending on the time of day, you'll get to watch stand up paddlers fall down, kite surfers touring the harbour or just watch the sailboats and navy tubs. Between the Pizza and the slow cooked things, I'l have a hard time making a choice when we go back. But no matter what I have, I'm having a side of the sweet potato fries! It was very hard to believe that this is owned by the same person who owns and runs the Crab House Cafe just down the road. But that's a topic for a different review, and I'm hungry now ...

There's only one thing better than Fish and Chips and that's Fish and Chips by the sea…read more Having spent most of the day in Winchester, my friend took me to Harlees, which is right on the quay at Poole, for what she thinks is the best fish and chips in town. Yep, she was right. I ordered a regular cod and chips meal for about £6. The cod was HUGE, the batter nice and crisp, plus there were bits as well! The chips were also lovely, covered in salt and vinegar. It was served in a box as well, which was a novelty to me. I couldn't resist but to start eating my chips as we were walking along the quay, and I reckon the smell of the sea air just adds to the saltiness of the chips, making them even better. The cod was really well cooked, with the crispness of the batter complementing the "melt in your mouth"-ness from the fish. So next time you're in Poole, check out Harlees. I know I'll be back!

Me and my partner came here a couple of months ago whilst my brother was in town and we tried the…read morefood here and by accident we had discovered a secret little gem. As we sat outside by the harbour we came to realisation that the chips were probably the most delicious we had ever tasted... at least when we visited on that occasion. We went back yesterday evening as my partners mother was in town and we opted to eat in using the restaurant. We had given glowing recommendations of this place to her mother as well as many friends and colleagues but we were absolutely and completely disappointed when we were served our food. The food was very bland, boring and nowhere even close to the same quality it was just a couple of months ago. The chips lacked their distinctive crispy coating texture and flavour. I spoke to the waitress and manager on several occasions because it was like we had come to a totally different restaurant. I asked the manager, 'what's happened to the place?', 'are the diners served the same food as those who get takeaway?' and 'are you using a different chef or kitchen because the food has gone seriously down hill?' Unfortunately, the only feedback I got as to why the food may not have been so much to my liking was because a different type of potato might have been used due to seasonal harvests. Well I'm sorry, and I'm no potato specialist but I doubt that the type of potato chosen would affect a decrease in quality to the level we experienced. The blame can only fall to one reason in my opinion; poor cooking skills and ability. It seems to me that something negative has affected what's being put out from the kitchen. Also, the portion size seemed relatively small for the priced you paid at £3 for about 12 chips. Lastly, my partners mother ordered desert (I didn't as I didn't think my terrible main deserved a desert order). She ordered the apple crumble only to be told by the manager that he would not be happy to sell it to us (so basically it had gone off). She did order another desert which she was reasonably happy with but overall I would not recommend this place to anyone. I think we will be going to Chez Fred's in the future!

I've never met Fred. But I do know I'd like Fred. The approach here is total quality with…read moregenerosity, good value, oh and as importantly, always a smile from staff. We were in a miserable hotel called West Cliff for 2 nights. The steam room was cold, it had no steam and the aromatherapy room had no aroma so I was in the cold hot tub thinking about dinner and explaining to locals how a miserable spiv manager here had refused me a fried egg at breakfast; apparently they had no fresh eggs. I said we were going to have the dinner offer they advertised but decided no more business for here. No fresh eggs my derrière. The locals told me to get breakfast in the Westbourne pub and raved about Fred's so we walked here on a lovely summer evening. We arrived after a 15 minute walk on a Tuesday night. It was packed out which was a great sight. The take - away too had crowds waiting patiently for their on-line orders. They smiled, took our number and said they'd call in about 30 minutes. So we had to go to a nearby pub (The Westbourne recommended for breakfast) a few minutes away; 1st world problems. Again this place was also busy for a Tuesday night albeit a pleasantly warm night. I had a pint of neck oil and my wife had a glass of rosé - £11.15. About 3O minutes passed and the phone rang...our turn. The sit-in part was still crammed full of happy people being served up delicious fish & chips and typical British desserts like lemon sponge, knickerbocker glory and sticky toffee pudding. So we opted for a Fred special (£17.95) as it got us prime cod and unlimited chips, mushy peas, their home-made tartare and coleslaw. We also got a bread roll with butter and a choice of wine or half pint of beer. The mushy peas were really exquisite. We could have had tea or filter coffee in the deal too. My wife got two rosé from the deal. I opted to pay extra for a pint of Piddle. I'd never heard of it but it was a tasty local beer. Everything was just perfect. We were offered more chips but we didn't finish the first lot. We were so full we had to forgo dessert. If I could give Fred 10 stars I would. If I could set Fred up in my home town I'd do it in a heartbeat. Thank you Fred and staff.

The second time, on a quiet Sunday night, the service was terrible. You get a different person for every element: menu, water, take order, bring order, follow up, bill. I don't drink so all I wanted was a glass of water, which only came after the food was served and I reminded the guy. It is difficult to flag down servers because it's almost as if they have been trained not to look at customers. But I should have known: the worst time to be in stores and restaurants is when things are quiet. The staff are doing other things - cleaning, setting tables, stocking etc. You get much better service when things are busy. Generally restaurants should put something, anything, in front of a customer while they wait for their food. Water, bread or bread sticks, whatever. I waited a loooong time at that table with nothing to do. The worst was paying bill - there was no one around. I was tempted to leave without paying because Harry's really didn't want my money. Recommendations: Harry's should use a regular time-tested policy for service with a waiter and bus boy assigned to a certain group of tables. Now the customer can know who their server is. Then, check on customers before, during and after the meal to make sure everything is okay.
