petite portion fish and chips
Vi L.

If I lived nearby, I would probably go here all the time. Top quality food, I think this is easily the best restaurant in Biddeford. The staff is nice and it's a chill environment but still feels like a nice place to go out. You just order at the front and they bring your food back to you. After coming here twice, I think basically everything here is good. They know how to flavor and fry things without making any the food feel heavy. The fish and chips are excellent and are their namesake. A petite portion is supposedly 4 oz fish? But I thought it was a good serving size! (see photo) Then the half portion is 8oz and large is 16. My friends got gluten free fish and it looked basically the same, and I'm told was good too. Fried chicken - also very good. I think the same amount of fries comes with each. Some other things I've tried include the roasted oysters, and I loved the bread crumbs on top. Just get one to try, though you might want more. We came for restaurant week which gave $5 off of $40 or more. This week, they had a mango champagne parfait which was tasty, but I really loved the soft serve and the toppings. I've previously tried their donuts and fritters which were also delicious. I think about the desserts here when I'm not here. MUST GET DESSERT IF YOU COME HERE! K thx

Chicken sandwich

An amazing spot if you're looking to try fish and chips. We stopped here on a Thursday eve and were able to get a table for 2. We got a bunch of things to try.. gluten free fish and chips, crispy chicken sandwich and a fried fish sandwich. The gf fish and chips were nice, light and crispy.. I wish they had a bit more seasoning in the gf flour but the tartar sauce makes up for it. My husband preferred the fried fish sandwich to the chicken sandwich and claimed that the fish was perfectly crisp and seasoned to perfection. Overall the food was great, service was fantastic and the place looked cozy and clean. A must visit if you're in the mood for fish and chips!!!

My fiancé has been talking about going the fish and whistle for a few months now.. We finally went. It was a very comfy, cozy and the staff was very friendly. She got the "Petite fish & chips " and I got the chicken sandwich! Both orders were perfect! The batter they use for the chicken sandwich was very tasty and different! I loved it and the chicken was juicy! I am already looking forward to going back! Her fish and chips were perfect! Very fresh and juicy as well! We will be back ! Highly suggest! I met Kate who is one of the owners and she was very friendly and thanked us for supporting their establishment .

Fish sandwich, green goddess salad, grilled oysters (special) fish n chips

This was my first time trying Fish & Whistle, came highly recommended from friends and also noticed they have been nominated for a James Beard award! I enjoyed the setting and how it is a come up to the bar to place your order setup! The service was excellent, very knowledgeable to what is in the food as my guest has a dairy allergy! Very casual setting, the food was amazing, loved the fry on the sandwich not too much the perfect amount, wasn't a huge fan of the bun but it was still good, tartar sauce was different couldn't put my finger on it but was not traditional. French fries were delicious. Green goddess salad was well dressed I would prefer my lettuce leaves to be cut up more than left as whole leaves (personal preference). Oyster special was amazing grilled oysters either a little bread crumb and butter! My friend said he really enjoyed the fish & chips as-well. Highly suggest the sour cherry limeade, not too sweet it was perfect! Only suggestion I would have is getting table covers for the tables I didn't like how they felt tacky / sticky. They were clean but whatever the tables were made with felt weird. Definitely will be returning!

The half order!

Oh the hype is so very real! Fish & Whistle is taking a simple concept - fried seafood and similar things - and excelling at it in every way! This little Biddeford spot is counter service and somewhat limited seating, so come early or plan to take it to-go. There is also bar seating, which is what we opted for, because that's where you'll get the best viewing of those giant pieces of fish taking a swim in the fryer! Let me back up - I don't have any earthly idea how someone would finish the full size fish and chips because it's bigger than a newborn. Seriously. I got the half order and it would've been incredibly tough to finish had it not been so freaking delicious. The breading is so dang crispy it's *dreamy*. The fish is so flaky and tender. Fries are hand cut and nice and crispy. Slaw is different than most - really thinly shaved cabbage and other veg, tossed in a super light vinegary dressing. I love traditional creamy coleslaw so it was just ok for me at first. But after a few bites of that fried goodness, the coleslaw is an absolutely perfect respite. It's a palate cleanser! The beer and wine selection is small but curated... Everything is on there for a reason. The rose was light and dry and just a little bit fruity - a perfect pairing with our meal. Their desserts are made in house too, and while we didn't get to try any while we were there, it sounds like they are not to be missed! So what are you waiting for? Get yourself to Fish and Whistle for some of the best fish and chips you'll ever get your hands on!

Haddock full meal!!!!!!! Yummy yummy

Absolutely the best place around for excellent fish. A little pricey but you can not put a price on super great food every time!!!!!!! The staff here are wonderful

yum is all I can say! We love this casual counter order gem. My husband had the fried chicken sandwich with fried. It was delicious, tasty bun, and good ratio of ingredients. The fries were fresh and homemade. Chicken cooked well. I had the salad and the fish sandwich. It was delicious. Loved the NA beer I had as well! We've been several times and food is always consistently good.

Fish Dip with fried Saltines
Tim S.

Small, intimate, yummy, and definitely (if you have to) worth the wait... Check the board for their specials, on our visit there was a lovely fish dip that was served with fried Saltines. I have never thought of frying this simple cracker however, the end result is magical. Pro tip, the 1/2 Fish & Chips is a ton of food for a single person. Only the exceptionally hungry should consider the full portion.

This is a HALF portion of their amazing fish and chips!

I should have reviewed Fish & Whistle ages ago, but have neglected a shout-out for this amazing spot for too long. Simply put, this place will knock your socks off. It's beautifully casual and unfussy with neat nautical decor and beautiful plants strung throughout the place. The staff is always friendly and willing to help. You often get a visit from one of the owners, she's also a pastry chef and is responsible for the fluffy milk buns they use for their sandwiches. They have the fryer down to a science. The battered fish comes out piping hot and delightfully crispy and light. The breading doesn't overpower the fish like st other places. The green goddess salad is always fresh and wonderful too. Definitely stop the next time you're in Biddeford. You won't regret it.

Fish and chips

If you're craving fish and chips I could not recommend this place enough. Fish was perfectly flaky breading was buttery and delicious and the fries cooked to perfection I took my first bite and was like "damn this is good" and I had a fat grin on my face. Not to mention if you have anybody with you who's allergic to gluten they can actually eat since they have a gluten free option which was still very good overall I'm coming back again, place was very good.

I went in on a very busy Friday afternoon and enjoyed the Fish and chips. The fish was fried with a tempura batter that usually consists of flour, egg and ice water. The Pollock was cooked perfectly and actually held together. The chips were crunchy and seasoned well. Lewiston by the Sea is getting better and better.

My wife and I stopped in here a few weeks back before going to sacred profane. The food was awesome. My wife and I split a large order of fish and chips. It was huge. It was a bit crowded when we were there, so the table was a little tight to site in, as the other table in the window had a family sitting there as well. Overall, I'd definitely stop in again if we are in the area again.

The menu is limiting so if you are in the mood for something other than fish & chips, seek another establishment.

No gimmicks; no jive. -- Clam Chowder: Only one size (bowl), but you'll be glad to have that amount once you taste it. Very thick and flavorful base, and not only won't you have to send out a search party to find the clams, but I'd also go as far as saying it's the most densely clam-filled broth I've had in a long time. Bacon adds texture, flavor, and saltiness in the best ways possible. Potatoes are in there, but a bit player (that's a good thing). Plenty of peppery seasoning on top, along with oyster crackers that are surprisingly not Westminster-- closer to mini Ritz crackers, but with an Old Bay twist. Among the tastiest chowder I've ever had if not the absolute best. Elite. -- Fish and Chips: Long, thick piece of fish artfully draped over the fries--err, chips-- and skillfully avoiding a dunk into the coleslaw. Golden brown batter thick but light, with a crispness not quite reaching crunch. Extremely tender and flaky; adequately moist. Solid rendition, though the chowder is what I'll remember most. Chips a little over-crisped on some, just-right on others. Coleslaw much more tart than most, with not much condiment, but thick and creamy. Great first visit. Glad I got a chance to try it before the inevitable summer lines will make it tough to revisit, but I will.

The clam chowder was down right delicious; the only thing that could have made it nearly perfect was if it had more clams and potatoes. I enjoyed the lobster roll very much. We both decided on the fish and chips and choose this place due to the favorable Yelp reviews. The fish portion was generous, but the fish was not fresh tasting and was a bit dry and not flaky. Waffle fries are served in place of the tradiontional straight cut "chips" and were seasoned with some spices that didn't go with the fish. Clearly everything is made from frozen. The tarter sauce was Ken's pre-made and not at all good. It's a crime to not have an in house made tarter sauce! Service was fine and prices comparable to nearby establishments. We would not choose to come here again for fish and chips and would not recommend.

There was a bit of a wait on a Saturday evening. Got there at 6pm but was able to sit at the bar since it's first come first served. Bartender was nice and friendly. We didn't order any drink since we hardly drink. Was given butter popcorn at the bar. It's butter flavored but a tad salty. The spinach dip as appetizer came piping hot with nice melted cheese but we couldn't taste any artichoke at all. It was a bit bland so we had to put tons of salt on chips and dip. It made it taste better. The Balsamic Chicken was good with tender chicken and sweet and sour vibe with balsamic. Reminded us of Hawaiian chicken from a buffet back in the day. The salmon was lightly seasoned but lacking some salt. It was however nicely cooked. It was expensive for a small 2x4 inch piece of meat. For the sides we had broccoli, rice pilaf, fries and up charged of $2.99 for asparagus. They were all fine but the fries were soggy and not salted. It has potential if they had fried it again the 2nd time. I bet the outer will get crunchier with tender middle and toss in salt would have made it much more appetizing. Only ate a few pieces of the fries. Asparagus was a little over cooked and so thin. I would have expected more for the up-charge. Overall was a decent meal. Will we go back again?
