First Step Basketball is more than just basketball training... it is a community. The children are taught basketball skills and progressions that are fundamental to the sport. On any given day, there are various levels of players, honing in on their craft. The parents are supportive of one another and the children. As Coach Bass always says, "it takes a village" ... it truly does... and he has created an extremely valued village that the community as a whole supports and appreciates. My daughter started with Coach Bass when she was 4 years old... and he has been a godsend! He instantly felt my daughters hesitation/fear when stepping on the court. He made sure to take her under his wing and help build her confidence. He introduced to her to other players and coaches, and helped her to come out of her shell. Everyday she asks if we are going to Coach Bass. If there is no practice, she asks to go outside and shoot some hoops. She says "you have to take a video and send it to coach". The sense of pride she has in herself and her abilities has so much to do with Coach Bass. My son who is 2, now asks, "I go to Coach?!" The enthusiasm, energy, and knowledge that radiates off of Coach is contagious. Every child, young man, young lady in the program is motivated because of him. They want to be better not only on the court, but in life. They are taught the importance of good grades- and are rewarded when those good grades come in. Every player is also held to a certain moral standard- coach expects them to be respectful to those around them. Not stand for bullying. Not partake in things that will not move them forward in the right direction academically/athletically. Coach Bass and the First Step coaching family are truly wonderful people. They care and will go the extra mile for any child. I highly recommend them to anyone, whether just starting out or on a team already. Coach Bass leads a team of coaches that do a great job coaching the kids. Practice are on Tuesdays and Thursdays (each 75 minutes long), and game day are on Saturdays (1 hour long, with one Saturday that is 2 hours long). Each season is 7 weeks long, 3 seasons per year. My son is currently in his second season with First Step Basketball. His basketball skills have improved, but that is not the main reason we enrolled him in First Step Basketball. My son has been in other basketball programs, but none is as organized and well attended as First Step Basketball. Well attended? The number of players can be an overlooked factor, but a very important factor. Why? Without at least 10 players, you cannot truly have a 5 on 5 game. My son looks forward to game day because not only is it truly 5 on 5, but there are enough players to fill the bench for both teams. Non-basketball coaching: A coach who inspires my son to make his bed A coach who care enough to ask is there any bullying going on in my son's class? A coach that building confidence for the kids, encouraging them to speak up and speak out. Coach Bass understands the important of great communication, which is why he not only emphasizes it on the court, but off the court too. To anyone who is thinking about this program, my suggestion is simple. Try it for one season. See for yourself. Inspiration comes in many forms, it can be in plain sight and inspire through mere observation or the way Coach Rodney Bass inspires the kids of First Step Basketball which is through determination, sweat, repeated success and ultimately by example. I have been lucky enough to join in his crusade to give back to the kids of our community, teach them the lessons that come with growing up and maturing to become functioning positive young adults in this world that has gone a bit mad with technology/social media and our need as a society to be updated immediately, a concept and necessity that continues to outpace the rest of the human race and engulf the younger generation to stay connected or feel lost in the abyss of information and data that fills our heads and thoughts everyday. Coach Bass continues to challenge our future generations with phrases like "work ethic" and "grind and hustle" not Snapchat, Instagram and the other social media outlets that I won't mention. He preaches family and a positive environment that allows the various age range of kids to not only show their passion for this game but also express the gratitude thru the hard work that is expected when in his gym. Over the past several months, my family (3 kids) had the pleasure of participating in this basketball league, and I can honestly say it has been an exceptional experience. The level of competition is top-notch, with players of all skill levels coming together to create an exciting and dynamic atmosphere. But what truly sets this league apart is the staff. From the moment I signed up, the communication was clear and prompt. The organizers were always available to answer any questions and made sure everything ran smoothly, from scheduling to game-day logistics. What really stands out is how dedicated and passionate the staff is about creating a fun and fair environment for everyone but also fosters a sense of community. They go above and beyond to ensure that players are safe, Whether it's keeping things organized on the court or making sure players feel valued off the court, it's clear that they care deeply about the league and its participants. This program is top-notch. I have enrolled 3 of my kids in the program so far, and plan on the other 2 participating as well! Coach Bass is tireless, and selflessly dedicates 6-7 days a week to the program YEAR-ROUND. His coaches are excellent people and fantastic examples for the kids. I applaud the discipline they instill, appreciate the love and gratitude that they share with the kids, and I have only great things to say about how parents are valued, listened to, and included in all of the program's successes. There are frustrations surrounding scheduling from time to time, due to facilities availability problems, but they are not due to the program's negligence so much as the realities of borrowing facilities from schools and other entities that have other priorities. All changes are communicated proactively and in a timely fashion. As the daughter of a coach myself, and someone who has worked in an NCAA collegiate athletic office, I highly recommend First Step Basketball to set your child up for future athletic success - they have the right attitude, and it will be a positive experience for your son OR daughter! read more

Coach Bass and FSB is a great program to develop our youth. Not only from a sport perspective but from a character and responsibility perspective as well. My son has never been into sports, he is not really athletic either, but he decided he wanted to try Basketball. I came across Coach Bass and invited us to come check out a training session. My son enjoyed it and he decided to join FSB. He transformation was not only physical, more stamina, but also helped him boost his confidence. So the program will not only work for athletic kids but also for any kid that may need help to have a drive in life, a mentor that can help them push when times get tough, which is part of life, and all of us will experience at some point in our life. Where do I start. Rodney is one of the most skilled trainers in Solano county. He preaches fundamentals and is an excellent trainer. I would recommend sending your child to his training program to develop their skills. Not only is he a trainer but he is a life coach and is big on grades. The First Step program if not just training, but it is a lifestyle that can put one in a position to reach success. Also you never who will be in the gym training. He brings in pros as well. There is the Dickson guy who comes in and helps the kids. IF YOU ARE NOT TRAINING YOU ARE NOT GETTING BETTER. I advice parents to invest in training not just a bunch of AAU games!!! read more

My daughter started training with First step when she was 6. Now at 8 years old she has been playing up in higher age groups and is able to run high school plays. Coach Bass is very consistent with what he does with the kids. I have personally watched kids develop in a short amount of time working with him. Most importantly First step is bigger than just basketball. Coach Bass understands and expresses the importance of education, and makes sure the kids know school always comes first. Can't recommend this program enough. Our daughter had been asking to play basketball for a year and finally after our move I found this program. They welcomed us right in on the first day. My daughter had some trouble with all the running at first but they helped her right away. All the stations and fundamentals they teach are so helpful. The coach to player ratio is perfect. Everyone is looking out for everyone. Even the older kids come out and help with the littles. My daughter loves to go to practices and game. First Step Basketball training was my family's first introduction to organized basketball. Coach Bass is amazing with the kids! My son trained and played for Coach Bass for several years; and it was during his most informative years as a young boy.
