I lived in SCV for quite some time, and it was my first time finding this gem of a place. I needed to get my racket re-strung and re-gripped, so I thought Dick's Sporting Goods was my only choice (RIP Sport Chalet). I wanted to see if there was a more "dedicated" tennis shop in SCV, and I found this place through Yelp. For first timers, please note you do have to go "inside" the Paseo Club. I don't have membership, but I was able to go in. Just let the receptionist know you are headed to First Service Tennis. I was greeted by Francis, who was extremely helpful in recommending what I should do, and what the proper racket for my 10-year-old daughter would be. I thought he was extremely knowledgeable on the subject, and even fairer when it came to pricing out the repairs + new racket. I will absolutely be coming here for *all* my tennis racket needs. Kinda disappointed. Tried to check out the shop before work but wasn't able to. Store signs, automated voicemail and the staff at The Paseo Club all said 9am. It's now 9:26 and no signs of life. Another staff member who was passing by asked if I was waiting for the shop to open. I said yes and she laughed and said they're always late. I am so glad I found this local tennis shop on Yelp. The customer service, prices and selection of shoes and racquets is great. The staff is highly knowledgable, personable and helpful. I came in with the intention to try on shoes, in particular the Nike Zoom Tour 9.5. I was semi deterred by the price tag ($140 same as online), so Bryan "the shoe guy" recommended shoes more in my budget. I settled on the Adidas Barricade. I initially liked the feel, but when I got home and walked around in them I realized I didn't love them. (A bit too much cushioning and bulk for me). I brought the Adidas back and Bryan gave me a full refund. He again showed me more options. I loved the Nikes the most and decided it was worth it. I bought a Gearbox racquetball racquet and thought it was the wrong grip size as it felt noticeably big in my hand. Little did I know that apparently there's some built-in plastic insert in the grip that nobody told me about. Anyway, I stopped by First Serve and Jake took it apart, removed the insert and I was back out the door in 10 minutes. Jake stopped what he was doing to help me out and I really appreciate it. Top-notch quality customer service at this place. I came in about an hour before closing and Todd informed me that the shop stops stringing for the day by this time. In trying to find a time that I could pick up my racket the following day, I explained to him my work schedule would only allow me to make it barely by or a bit after 6PM. Realizing they would be closing exactly at 6 on that particular day, Todd decides he will make an exception and string my racket right then and there. To make matters even more challenging for him, a few customers come in just as he starts stringing my racket. I should also mention Todd was the only one manning the shop at this time; so the way he handled the situation of three different customers' needs and transactions simultaneously is nothing short of impressive. After attending to each customer, he finished stringing my racket and I was out the door in no time. I popped into this shop to get my racket re-strung and Francis was so friendly. He helped me pick out the strings and even a matching color grip. So impressed! I called First Serve yesterday morning (10/3/13) from Hawaii, where I live, after reading about Francis in a Santa Clarita paper on the Internet. My daughter, a freshman at CSUN, plays her first official match as a Matador today (10/4/13) at Long Beach, with just one racquet in her bag. She recently switched from Wilson to Babolat and the racquet shipment ordered by her coach is delayed. Francis understood immediately. Not only did he have the new Babolat AeroPro Drive in stock , it was priced at $20 less the the internet retailers. When I asked him about getting it to her in Northridge, he replied (and I'm not exaggerating), "I know Coach Gary. He's a great guy. Why don't I string your daughter's racquet here and deliver it to her at school on my way home tonight." Francis texted my daughter about strings and tension, I paid for the racquet over the phone and, by 7 pm last night, she had a brand new racquet tucked safely in her bag.
