Strips of food trucks
Jennifer H.

Overwhelmed with this First Friday of the month food truck street thang. Boyfriend and I were just hanging around Venice beach until it was dinner time. Drove down Abbot and saw a bunch of trucks and a hell of people. We both had no idea what was going on but we stopped by anyways. Parking sucked at 6 because people were getting off work and also, it was dinner time. On abbot, there's a few restaurants that are opened for those who weren't interested in street trucks so don't worry if none of the trucks look good. As we got to one of the trucks, we asked some guy who was in line what's this trucks about? Every first Friday of the month, trucks come out. Made a lot of sense to us after. We tried the White Rabbit food truck which was Filipino taco truck. It wasn't too bad. 3 tacos for $4? Sauce was tasty though. Next month noted, check it out again when we are not full. Some trucks accept card but bring cash just in case!

Came here for the first time in October with my friends and totally loved it. Venice has created such a fun environment for people to enjoy their Friday night. Indulge in all kinds of food from some pretty cool food trucks. The vibe is friendly, people are happy as they enjoy their yummy food. I mean it's a win win. Oh and make sure you go before the sunset to snap some pretty cool photos!

Waiting for food trucks in The Brig parking lot

Every first Friday of the month, a bazillion people come to Abbott Kinney for shopping, sidewalk sales, art gallery browsing, and food trucks. We were here for the FOOD!! Tonight, bf, Ciara G. and I ate: Frysmith The Greasy Wiener The Buttermilk Truck Coolhaus Though they were there, we did NOT eat: Dogtown The Grilled Cheese Truck Baby's Badass Burgers Kogi Calbi Dosa Truck Gourmet Genie Fishlips Ta Boom Border Grill Dainty Cakes The Dim Sum Truck Party Qsadilla Green Truck Kassava Caribbean Cupcakes A Go Go Vizzi Flying Pig Truck a crepe truck - Crepes Bonaparte maybe There were more, but I don't remember which!!! We got here around 7:30-ish, and were lucky to see someone pulling out of a street space a block away from the madness. Important lessons learned for a happier next time: * Arriving at or before 6pm and leaving before 8pm gets you easy parking, the shortest lines, and the thinnest crowds * Arriving after 11-11:30pm gets you easy parking and some shorter lines, but you risk trucks running out of food, and the people that are still there are drunk and unsteady : ( Definitely good people watching, but be prepared to get elbowed within an inch of your life!

Wow. This was my first time ever at First Friday in Venice, and it lived up to the hype. This is a foodie's dream. I couldn't even count how many food trucks were there, then you add all the cool local eateries as well, and you can see that the biggest problem is deciding what to try. Kogi, Border Grill, Dim Sum, Grilled Cheese, Louks, Vizzi, Baby's Bigass Burgers, Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches, India Jones, Flying Pig, Rue d' Paris, etc. If you've ever heard of a food truck, they were here. In fact, they can't all fit in the parking lot so half of them are parked down the street. People walk up and down Abbot Kinney street for hours just eating and eating. By midnight there were food comas happening everywhere! Plus, all the local restaurants, bars, and shops stay open late this night and have First Friday specials. The down side: it's so popular that every place is packed, and you'll wait up to an hour for most good places. You can find some food trucks with smaller lines, but there is a reason for that. The great places are usually worth the wait. Also, parking is brutal, so get there early and plan to just stay until late.

Steak Mac n cheese

Lots of options! Super cute and fun but take your time and definitely do a food game plan! I got a lobster roll ($17) which I thought was kinda small but yum and a steak Mac n cheese which was good but very rich and the meat was kinda weird

this is still a fun place to hang out. i still highly recommend it. but, damn... that freakin Grill Cheese truck line is mad nuts! and apparently, so are the people that wait in it, including us! the other trucks, dim sum, border grill etc etc, were more manageable. took about 45mins to get our grilled cheese. GRILLED CHEESE! and it cost $21 for 2 grilled cheese and tots. TOTS! hahaha... i'm not bitching, just had to get it off my chest. man... :)

Crispy Cuban: avocado/veggie bowl and potato balls
Janani M.

This is definitely something that everyone should check out!! The amount of options is a little crazy and intimidating, but almost everything is worth it! I tried the avocado and veggie bowl and the group d beef potato balls at the Crispy Cuban, and the smores sandwich at the Grilled Cheese truck. I would recommend trying appetizers at multiple place so you can try a wider variety of food items!! Otherwise you'll get full real fast. Also Abbot Kinney has so many restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops. So EVEN MORE options!!! It's also a good idea to Uber there or take the bus because parking can be really hard to find!

It's always fun walking around and exploring the wonderful creativity, as well as vibrant nature simply existing, all around! Fragrant Flowers | Each time I wander around the Venice Canals, I always seem to discover a colorful, new flower, often times quite fragrant, which catches my eye! The Birds of Paradise always makes my day, as it's one of my favorites, standing proudly, in its exotic glory! Connected | It's always fun, walking over the different bridges and taking in the scenery & sights along the way! You may spot people going for a walk, others walking their dogs, some taking photos and are simply enjoying the moment while walking! Personality Plus | It's exciting seeing a variety of colorful homes, with each having a personality of their own! Whether big or small, the details seems to tell a different story, reflective of the owner/renter and how they naturally stand out on their own! Sightings | While out & about, I often see cute little dogs walking around alongside their friendly owners! On some occasions, it makes my day to spot a stroller and the excitement of seeing that there are actually dogs inside! Haha! You may see ducks walking around together along the walkways, or swimming around, peacefully! While the walkways are for pedestrians only, you might even see cars driving over the vehicular bridges! Festive | The Venice Canals definitely know how to ring in the holidays! I'm grateful to experience the festivities inside of some of the homes with friends, as well as attending fun holiday boat parades(open to the public!), and events on the canals! Holiday cheer and neighborly camaraderie seems to flow with good vibes from beginning to end! Flutter By | It always makes my day whenever I see a pretty colorful butterfly flying by during my walk! Note | I usually walk through the canals during the morning/daytime and if at night, during a celebration where there are many people out and about! Overall | I absolutely love walking through Canals! I'm in incredibly grateful that they are nearby, walking distance, and a hop, skip & a jump away! I was also curious about what Venice is looking like lately after huge companies like Google have moved into the area with presumably a lot of of their staff. I also thought that during the holidays there would be a lot of cute holiday decorations. It was actually refreshing to see that the place had not changed much at all. It was very low-key and homiey. In fact, it looked like time had not changed at all. It is a very peaceful spot to enjoy a little walk, and there are quite a few runners and bikers that are doing the same thing.

Very exciting time for me since this year is my first time at the festival. I've seen great photos of the colorful parade and this year, the timing worked magically.I was able to attend it and eager to do so. The Festival of Chariots (Ratha Yatra) is an ancient Indian celebration dedicated to 3 deities. Hence the 3 chariots (floats) you see at the parade. The first festival in US was held in San Francisco in 1967 (they still organize it in Golden Gate Park). Since '76, Venice Beach hosts another one on the West Coast, a perfect location, in tune with the vibe of the celebration which takes places over 3 days in Santa Monica. In the last day, a parade starts on Main Street in Santa Monica, moves along Ocean till it gets to Venice Beach where booths, tents are set up for more festivities to follow. This is a beautiful event, very colorful, peaceful and unique. Many participants wear Hindu inspired clothing, some pull the chariots ahead by huge ropes (I was told it's good for your karma to do so). Everyone is friendly, they spread their joy, books about their spirituality, vegetarian cooking and yoga. A lady from the parade stopped to talk to us, she gave useful information about the history behind the event, the sister parade in San Francisco and about this cool fest. No one is trying to convert anyone, it's not about pushing anything on you. I'm interested in other cultures and spirituality of various people and I practice yoga, so I don't mind learning more things. The parade starts at 10 am in Santa Monica, it gets around noon in Venice, be there a bit before. It's lively, colorful, like no other. Very joyful. Then, more festivities begin, there's a stage where they have various artists perform, booths where you can learn about the history of the festival and where you can practice yoga. They have a free vegetarian feast (for 20,000 people), the line was moving and I enjoyed the food and the tea they served (Thank you!), it's such a nice, generous gesture. There are more booths where they sell Indian street food, fruits, drinks, smoothies. We tried the coconut water ($4) fresh, from an actual coconut, I'm not a huge fan of coconut water (I know it's trendy), the taste doesn't do it for me, but I enjoyed the experience.Had to try it! There are booths where they sell Indian clothes, home decor, jewelry. I've been to many street fairs and this one has the most reasonable prices for food and merchandise. It is hot, but you're on the beach. Casual, fun event. It's a positive vibe all around, people are nice, that's what this festival is about. Love, tolerance and kindness, which we can have more in our lives nowadays. We can learn from each other and the Festival of Chariots can open your mind and hearts. Hare Krishna, everyone! Love, joy and peace!

WARNING: Aggressive "Free CD" Hustlers - DO NOT TAKE THE CDs!…read moreLocation: Right outside the Muscle Beach parking lot, near the outdoor gym. Be extremely careful if you are walking near the Muscle Beach parking lot. There is a group of three men claiming to be "up-and-coming musicians" running a very aggressive, coordinated hustle. Here is exactly how their scam works so you can avoid it: * The Hook: One guy will approach you and try to hand you a "free" CD. Even when we said no, he played on our sympathy, claiming it was his own music and asking us to just show some support for a starter artist. Out of politeness, we took it. * The Trap: He immediately offered to sign the CD. While we were distracted waiting for him to sign it, his two partners swarmed us and pushed their own CDs into our hands. * The Shake-Down: Once the first CD was signed, the "free" aspect completely disappeared. He demanded a donation and refused to accept small bills. When my husband took out a $20 bill to break it, the guy practically grabbed it out of his hand and walked away. * The Swarm: Then, the other two musicians cornered us, demanding money for their CDs. My husband gave one of them his last $5, and the guy actually complained that it wasn't enough. The third guy started whining about getting nothing. * The Intimidation: I tried to be nice and intended to give the last guy $5, but they started physically circling me, aggressively demanding $20. I felt incredibly uncomfortable and intimidated. I told them to just take the CDs back--we didn't even listen to that type of music and certainly weren't paying $60 for it. They refused to take them back, eventually lowering their demand to $20 to split between them. To get out of this threatening situation quickly, I handed over a $20 bill just so they would leave us alone. This whole experience was extremely upsetting. I would gladly give my money to someone genuinely in need, but being bullied and cornered into "donating" is completely unacceptable. It left such a bad taste for us, we ended up did not spend a dime in any of shops there. Not event a souvenir! Bottom Line: If anyone approaches you with a CD, do not make eye contact, do not engage, and DO NOT take the CD no matter what they say. Just keep walking!
