This review is not for the provided dental care itself, but the billing, appointments and explanations of care and costs. Multiple times I feel like the steps haven't not been clearly laid out and there often seems to be miscommunications. One of my last appointments was canceled by them which was fine they gave me plenty of notice, but when I rescheduled they only schedules me for a cleaning not the full work I was scheduled for on that visit they canceled. That's the second time my appointment has been mishandled. I was given an estimate at the start of some dental work which I delayed so that's on me but the initial estimate was very different from the costs that seem to keep coming. I wish they would provide you with a clear expectation of cost prior to your visit and be crystal clear if something changes. I want to be told exactly what I will be paying at each visit not what part of it costs and when I ask if that's the cost of the visit they say yes but then say they didn't add the other procedure that was just of it. If I say im coming to get this this and this done and you give me a cost for this and this but I specifically ask if that's is the cost of all of the work I requested I expect that to be correct. It is not my fault if your staff is not communicating. Not to mention the dr is only there a few days a week so it's difficult to get appointments that are good for 9-5 workers. I think they need to step up their office work and be transparent about billing, but I'll never know as I will be going somewhere else from now on. A reschedule, a 1/2 schedule and a billing issue within the space of 6 months is just a little too irritating to me. read more

I lost a filling and was in excruciating pain and called them. First off, the staff who answered my call are absolutely amazing and they got me an appointment the same day. Dr. Nuba and her assistant were the best I have ever had in my 52 years going to the dentist. I have a phobia and they were so gentle and kind! If you love going to the dentist, choose these guys. You'll be back more often than you can imagine, because they will take every opportunity to tell you you need fillings (subsequent dentists assured me these were not even considered cavities, and had to redo fillings from First Dental that popped out). Every time I went in with a complaint, the doctor spent a long time with me, but it felt like she was just trying to placate me and talk me down (patronizing and unhelpful). It did not seem like she really understood what was happening to me. Also, their hygenists are apparently incapable of keeping their work in your mouth--I always end up with water all over my neck and down my shirt that they tried to convince me was normal or had something to do with how I am made. I've been going to the dentist for most of my 42 years on earth and do not ever remember that being a 'normal' experience! When I finally went to another dentist (Dental Delights--highly recommend!), she immediately figured out that my repeated 'cavity' was actually a chipped tooth, likely from grinding my teeth on a worn-out night-guard. She gave me a new night-guard, redid the filling, and told me to start using Sensodyne toothpaste. Just went in for a cleaning today and it was my first normal, healthy, pain-free cleaning/check up in YEARS. And my shirt stayed dry, bonus. read more

My dad went there for his tooth extraction. This is his 2nd extraction there. He was very satisfied with the first extraction 8 months ago with a different doctor. The doctor said the tooth was cracked and might cause problems during extraction, which it did and it took the doctor about an hour. At the beginning of the process, my father was NOT numbed enough and he was in severe pain. I heard him moan in pain but she just continued. My father said he was in EXTREME pain and then she numbed him more. After that it went fine but almost an hour. I felt bad for my father who is 87 years old. read more

I have gold fillings and crowns and a crown came loose as I was eating on Saturday, past office hours for first dental. I called Monday morning and was able to come in shortly after noon. They re-set the crown and it felt better than before! I really appreciate that they could see me on such short notice. Filling fell out twice due to poor workmanship. I went into First Dental with high hopes based on the reviews, but found the quality of the work to be substandard. I had a filling done and it didn't last 1 day before it fell out. I went in for a repair and after having the old one drilled out and replaced, it was immediately sensitive/painful. After going in for an adjustment, the pain did not abate and about 1 week later it fell out again. I had to go to another dentist to get quality work done, and First Dental currently maintains that because services were rendered that I will still be billed and required to pay out of pocket expenses. The dentist I saw was very disrespectful. He had no compassion towards my I'll dental health and implied that I had done all 9f the damage to my teeth and it wash fault. I had three appointments the past week: a much needed check-up and cleaning, performed by a very kind and thorough dental hygienist whose name I can't recall; a tooth restoration; and three cavity fillings, all performed by Dr. Ben Woolnough. In short, I had a really wonderful experience. I've had bad dentists, either because they were inattentive or because they appeared to want to upsell me into unnecessary procedures -- and this was not like that. Initially I was a bit miffed that I needed three appointments (the transportation costs will run me about 60 dollars, and right now I'm living an every-dollar-counts life), but I think in the end it was a courtesy to me, as it would have been two plus hours with my jaw forced open. Dr. Woolnough and his assistants were attentive, courteous, and communicated clearly what was going to happen to me. They were also very vigilant looking for signs of discomfort; part of the reason I had three cavities is that I dreaded coming in due to the pain involved and let it worsen, but the moment I flinched, Dr. Woolnough asked me what was going on and administered additional numbing agents. The administrative team at the door remembered my name and worked with me as much as they could to get me in quickly. I was always accompanied to and from the front desk, which meant I was never lost about where I was supposed to be. It's easy to downplay that kind of work as not important when the primary service is medical, but they were really kind and knowledgeable, and since I've never met a person that looked forward to the dentist, they did their part to reduce any reason I might be apprehensive. In summary: this was my first week working with the First Dental team, but they immediately treated me like a regular and were absolutely professional and courteous. So let me just start off by saying this is my SECOND time writing a review for this practice. (The other was 3 years ago on google). I have been going to this practice since 2017. I originally came in as an emergent infection patient. After the great service I received in 2017, I chose to continue my dental work and become a regular patient with the practice. Since then, I have had ZERO complaints. I have never EVER left this practice feeling any kind of pain. Nor have I ever left my house in fear of going to this dentist. I went in today for 2 fillings and a crown (not an easy procedure). I was expecting to be at least someone sore. NOPE! Pain free! The only pain I felt was from the lidocaine to numb my mouth. I can't recommend this practice enough! If you leave the dentist in pain, and or if you have a fear of dentists... this is the practice for you! read more

The worst customer service. I used to go here and loved it. Recommended it. I understand COVID changed the staff here, but that doesn't mean their customer service needed to change as well. Their manager lied they would contact me back in January. It's almost April and still the run around. They do not care about their customers and could care less about money I have lost on services. I got a referral to see Dr. Ghobbeh from a friend who used to be his dental assistant (or hygenist? Sorry babe, I can't remember which you are!). His office was sunny, tidy, and the receptionist was friendly. The assistant/hygenist was really great when I had to have a couple of awkward x-rays done. They were really uncomfortable but she talked me through them, telling me to relax and breathe normally, etc. Very sweet. The doctor himself was friendly and matter-of-fact. He looked me in the eye, answered all of my questions, and didn't make me feel stupid for not having been to the dentist for a while. I have to go back to have some work done in Feb, so I'll post an update then, but so far so good! read more

Due to lack of insurance I had not seen a dentist in over 15 years. First dental did not judge my lack of care! The front staff was welcoming and easy initial paperwork. I was seen by Dr. Vu who did a fantastic job cleaning my teeth! I haven't had teeth this clean in a long time! The staff was friendly and the office was clean with new equipment! First when I went there, I automatically had a negative vibe from the atmosphere, and my son did as well. The dentist filled 6 cavities on both sides of my sons mouth, and I was told he had 3, maybe 4, cavities left. When we left, my son was miserable, drooling, couldn't eat or drink for 24 hours, and said he never wanted to go back. I took him to my dentist who I found out took children, who told me on a minor they shouldn't do both sides of his mouth because you can't let a child go 24 hours without eating or drinking, and he didn't have any cavities. So unless you want unneeded work done and be around miserable, negative people, go here. If you don't want that, I suggest you highly think about going here. read more

Cruel, cold, unethical, inhumane and venal: Very greedy and Please stay away. This my first negative review and I didn't want waste anyones time, here are the facts. I took my dad to replace his bottom dentures at First Dental in Medford when he lost them during a medical stay few weeks ago at a local Boston hospital . All was well until yesterday February 24th. The hospital is very well known and a respected medical institution with a global reputation and I thank them deeply for taking care of my father. The hospital in writing and over the phone requested the clinic to fix a new denture with a promissory legal signature that the hospital will pay the full cost. Later in the same week, a gentlemen who is the Operation Manager for the hospital spoke to the owner of First Dental and agreed that they will release the denture and wait for their check. This is very usual with insurance and in small business transaction as well as multinational corporation. The product when is finished is delivered and sometimes the payment is processed whiten weeks with no issues. However the front desk staff did not give us the dentures, the claim was that it is a " policy" ( a word that should be banned from a business perspective ) even though the hospital in writing and verbally confirmed that they are paying for the denture. What good does it do a medical office/doctor by holding a patient's dentures when a multibillion dollar globally known and respected medical institution has promised in writing to pay for the denture? I made very clear how offensive this behavior was and is by the owner of First Dental in Medford. They mistreated my father including not trusting the good name and promise of a great hospital in the worla. First Dental didn't care...only about money and that's the message I received loud and clear from them. No one even in cold hard business should be treated this way, by demanding immediate payment when payment is on the way. I am a Public Servant and all I have is my dignity, honor and reputation. I offered to provide a check and an additional promissory note of payment as an extra measure for their piece of mind. They refused. I am upset, disappointed, angry and very dissatisfied. My father was made to suffer for weeks under which he didn't eat solid food because they refused to give us his dentures. When a patient goes to a hospital or needs to see a doctor, are they turned away because payment must first be received from " Private for Profit Insurance" when they have insurance? The doctor or the hospital almost always receive their payment after the care has been completed. As a private business, First Dental should understand, it is a basic rule of accounting that clients pay after receiving the final product, sometimes even with multinational corporations, the good is delivered and the payment is processed weeks and sometimes months after the fact ( I am talking from purely business perspective). We have been treated like we are worthless and mere numbers and I didn't question the bill and I wonder why? First Dental lost more than 1 customer, and I assure of them of that. They lost their humanity, soul and heart if they have one, they lost the privilege and honor that comes with being members of an honored class of fine people: the medical profession. Nowhere in the world except in clinics run by greedy vampire capitalist is this done. Beyond wrong from an ethical perspective and deeply immoral, no one should be treated this way.... No one whether they have money or not. Medical treatment is a human right and not the privilege of the rich and insurance companies. The owner of First Dental knew they will get paid but chose to mistreat us When the bottom line is dollars and thats all that matters to First Dental so much is lost and sacrificed before the altar of stone cold greed and profit, a moral act is immoral unless it is universal and this act is beyond repugnant. First Dental has violated basic hippocratic and medical ethics by withholding a patient dentures and causing unreasonable and unnecessary pain, agony and suffering to a senior citizen. There must be accountability so that people are not treated this inhumane and cold way. The public needs to know the cruel nature of the owner of First Dental. This is not right and shame on him. read more

I wanna give it more stars but.... to be fair the old dentist that was there who recently moved was gentle and good. The hygienist who brushes and flosses your teeth is nice and calming. So here lies the problem they're nice and etc....but I can't deal with whomever is in the front end calling you nonstop like her fingers are on the redial. 1 day I counted while at work 13 missed calls from them about an appt. Mind you I don't have an outstanding bill with them I just have the regular okie dokie work done every 6 months....so my question is where's the fire???...why hound or act like a telemarketer or even worse a bill collector ....for an upcoming appt...the turn off is anyone going to the extreme for no good rational reason...it was ridiculous while I'm at work I'm forwarding her to VM and she's finger farting on my phone...i blocked them off the phone and will gladly let the owner or manager know it too. I started there 2 yrs ago again for cleanings and a deep cleaning it was great but after that perhaps new staff or whatever...but finger on redial technique turned me off...especially if pt owes you nothing...leave a message or VM and move on....my goodness...smh read more

Very efficient, businesslike, friendly. Other dentists I have been to in the past seemed to me at times to find "extra" work that needs to be done, but, at the cleaning I had today, the person who took x-rays and cleaned my teeth said that she saw one spot that looked a little problematic to her. When the dentist, Dr. Woolnough examined me later, he said that the dark spot on my x-ray was not a real problem but was due to a filling material that had been used in the past that looked "funny" but was actually sound. In other words, he could have told me I needed to have a filling replaced, but didn't. read more

I'm not even sure how to explain my experience at First Dental. What I will say for those of you who don't have time to read my entire review is- DO NOT GO HERE. I don't think I've ever written a poor review on Yelp so I guess there is a first for everything... It started before my husband and I even got there. He made an appointment for their Somerville Ave location and then, the day before the appointment, he was told we'd actually have to go to Medford. We weren't thrilled, but hey- it could always be worse! And then it was. When we got to the Medford location, the receptionists seemed nice. We sat for a little while waiting to be called back and they were chatting, chatting, chatting about everything under the sun. Still, not such a big deal. What WAS a big deal, though, came next. When I was called back, I was moved chairs several times as if the assistant was on the first day of the job. She took my x-rays in one chair, then told me to move, then told me not yet- to go sit back down- then told me to move again. When I was finally moved to another chair, another assistant came over to me, pointed to my husband and said "Oh! Is that your son??". I don't look a day over 28 at most (I'm 26 and most people think I'm still a teenager half the time) and when I corrected her and said "You mean my husband?" she looked at me in disbelief and said "No, no...that must be your son." This went on for about a minute or two where she absolutely didn't believe that the man next to me with a full beard, was my 26 year-old husband. I was horrified-such rude staff! Beyond that, my husband and I both got the worst cleanings of our lives- he had toothpaste all over his face when he was done and mine felt like nothing but a normal toothbrushing that I can do for myself at home. When we were finally done, on our way out, the dentist stopped us and said he thinks he wanted us to have another x-ray done. It turns out the assistants didn't know what they were doing- shocker! So we had to go back in and get MORE x-rays done. While all of this was happening, the receptionists were running around like chickens without their heads, the assistants were totally confused and the doctor was ACTUALLY rolling his eyes at everything going on. What a joke of a dental practice! TO TOP IT OFF: When I got home that day, I realized there was further discoloration of some bonding I had on my front tooth. I will admit, the bonding was old, but this was new discoloration- and the bonding felt loose and my gums/that tooth was very sensitive. I decided to wait a couple days and thought it was due to the cleaning. TODAY my bonding actually came off completely at 8:00AM so I called them, already angry about my experience, and they didn't even call me back until 4:00PM! I went to another dentist who was wonderful in Waltham (NK Family Dental on Main St) and they were able to help me. DO NOT GO TO THIS PRACTICE!!! You've been warned!! read more
