I can honestly say that Marcelino single-handedly has broken the mold for the "2025 colossal douchebag winner". I called him over a week ago for a job, and he quoted me a fair price and scheduled a date the following week to do the work. I'm redoing my backyard and needed to coordinate his job with some stucco repair and paint work from other subs. After five days of leaving several messages and texts, he gave absolutely no reply. I'm usually willing to give somebody the benefit of the doubt. There are several reasons someone might not reply... Maybe there was an accident....maybe something happened to their family, etc. Having said that, I figured I would try to call him from a different line than the one I had been previously using to leave messages and texts from. SHOCKER!!! He picked up on the first ring, then proceeded to tell me that he had to go to Mexico because his grandmother had passed away, and he had to deliver her body down there. Wow, that is completely tragic, and I wouldn't want anybody to go through that. He also claimed he would call me back within the hour to firm things up for the next day. Well after 4+ hours, that never happened. He just continued to string me along. Based on a lot of the one-star yelp reviews I read....Somehow, I have the funny feeling that he's had a lot of relatives pass away and have to be delivered down to Mexico. If you're looking for any kind of rain gutter work to be done on your house, Marcelino and the other folks at First Choice may be a good fit for you. If you like being quoted great pricing, then ghosted, lied to, inconvenienced, and left feeling like you completely wasted your time with a moron, then give First Choice a call. Marcelino and his business will fit all those wickets perfectly. I realize times are tough for contractors and subs right now. We're in the middle of a down cycle. We used Marcelino once before a couple years ago, and then again a couple weeks ago. While there were always challenges with communication and reliability in showing up on the day he scheduled, we never had major issues like with this current job. After saying he would come back to finish the job, he took our money, never showed back up, and has gone radio silent since. I don't think I've ever seen this degree of dishonesty and lack of integrity/reliability before. After finishing the initial install, I noticed a couple issues (mainly that the slope of one of the gutters is off, so it's pooling rather than draining), and he said he would come back. He kept rescheduling though, and not showing up. In the meantime he made sure to text me frequently until I paid him the full remainder of our balance, and then after I did he went completely silent. I've tried calling and writing to him several times over the last week, and haven't heard back at all. I don't typically write negative reviews, but this experience has been so unusual and unprofessional, I thought I should let others know so you don't get burned as well. Having lived in San Diego for a while and worked with a lot of contractors, I don't have very high expectations for customer service. At the very least though you do expect people to take responsibility for their work/mistakes, and to eventually show up if they say they will (especially after just paying $2k for a small job that only took a few hours). So I was just really surprised and upset to get this kind of treatment from Marcelino, and wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with this sort of experience. There were some other red flags as well regarding quality of work, cutting corners and being dishonest about it, but none of that really compares to taking the money and running. So some recent interaction with this company has made me decide to update my review. Especially since the original review was from service provided a couple years back. I need a section of my rain gutters replaced and since 1st Choice installed the gutters and I was extremely happy with them, I decided to see if they'd come out and do the repair. Long story short and condensed, I reached out to them at first by phone which later we texted back and forth. He gave me a quote via text which I approved and requested he setup the job. It's been weeks now and he ghosted me. I'm not sure why or for what reason, but apparently just replacing a 35 foot section of gutter isn't worth his time. The lack of basic customer service is the most upsetting. I would have understood if he is just too busy to come for a small job. Even if he straight out said it's just not worth it to him, I would have appreciated more than being ghosted, at least he would've been honest. Unfortunately, there's not a huge selection on rain gutter companies, but I will be looking elsewhere and suggest you do as well. To be fair, they did a good job the first time and you might have a good experience with them as well if you're willing to take that chance. I had termite damage and needed some roof support beams replaced under my Spanish tile. I solicited recommendations from neighbors and called the top 3 for bids. After vetting all 3 companies, I chose FCR -- primarily because their bid was far lower than the other 2. Marcelino and his main guy Edwin did a truly fantastic job on my roof. The demo went smoothly, the new beams were perfect, and they didn't break a single tile. Edwin worked in the hot sun for 2 days like a madman -- couldn't believe it. He got everything right. They cleaned up well too. Here's the kicker. I had a trim piece in bad shape and they came back AFTER they finished and brought me a new piece they configured to fit. They didn't even tell me they were going to do it. And they installed it. No charge! Sometimes the low bid can greatly exceed expectations -- I'm grateful to the guys and happy to recommend them to everyone. read more

My wife and I just purchased a new home about, eight months ago and have been loving every minute of it. Being in San Diego, the weather is almost always sunny and rain is something that very rarely comes to mind. So when it came just recently, I took the time to walk around the house to see if there were any issues that needed to be addressed. While I was making my rounds, I noticed a portion of my roof and a long valley in it. As rain would hit the body of the roof, it would run into the valley, gain speed on its way down, and shoot over that portion of my rain gutter completely. The water was hitting the ground with such force, it seemed to be causing erosion. I immediately started panicking because the last thing I wanted was for the water to gather and get underneath the house. I ran to Lowe's and Home Depot searching for answers and found nothing. Jumped on Yelp, typed "rain gutter" into the search bar and started making calls. No one would help me. They either would say they, "didn't have the time to come out," or they wanted to charge me $200 bucks. Thankfully, I eventually got in contact with Marcelino. He explained what was going on with the roof and how I needed a "diverter." He also took the time to look at his schedule and see they were close to my area the following day and offered to stop by and fix the problem. At this point, I was getting ready for the large dollar figure he would tell me the job would cost. Guess what he told me? No cost at all. I was shocked. His brother came by the following day, fixed my problem and was off on his way. We had to practically force a tip on him because he wouldn't accept it. This company has really great reviews on Yelp so we reached out end of last year to get gutters installed. We are in the process of getting our backyard landscaping done and the gutters need to be installed first so the landscaper can tie in the downspouts to the drains. I gave them my contact info through Yelp and asked them to call or text but they never did. They no call no showed three times so ended up going with another company. I can't on comment on the quality of their work but I felt it was important to comment on a business that is not reliable. Especially if you need to get gutters installed in a timely manner.
