Merrithew & Thorsten are a "fee-only" financial planning group. What that means is that they…read morearen't commission based (thank goodness - I've been nickel & dime'd by those types before) they only make money on the money you have invested with them, so if your portfolio value goes down, so does their fee. I guess it gives them extra incentive to "grow" your account. Les is a CPA & does life planning financial work. He's the chatty one. His partner Brandon does investment planning and is the not so chatty one. Its a good mix when you're going in to meet them. I was pleasantly surprised by their on target planning and investment strategies. My accounts have grown even in a crummy market. I even did the whole, ok - I'll put some money with you & the same amount with someone else & then I'll do my own thing & see who does best. I hate to say, they totally left me in the dust with my accounts & Fidelity didn't hold up too well against them either. All in all a good firm..

We were married a few years earlier and wanted to make sure all our ducks were in a row with regard to wills and trust, financial investments, saving for a bigger house, etc. I thought a financial planning service would help us get organized and prompt us to do what we needed to do if we were missing anything. It didn't happen. They were only interested in our transferring our funds to an account they can handle to invest and start making a commission on but were very lax about organization of things that need to be done. When I asked about wills and trust because it was included in the price they charged they said other things needed to be done first. After a year, we had to admit nothing of significance was getting done so we left them. It was money down the drain for us. It boiled down to not trusting them. If a place has to call you in for a separate "song and dance" before giving you a quote for how much it's going to cost you, be careful! I should mention I interviewed their clients for references before hiring them and the clients were all positive about them. But interestingly, many were behind in getting organized as well and doing their wills and trusts.
