Broken Break Pad

*Long Post Alert* After purchasing my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport, I was advised to take it to this particular Firestone location, on Savannah Hwy. I've since then taken my vehicle there 4x total, twice for service. The other 2 times that I took my vehicle I wasn't able to have it serviced due to being short of technicians or the technician being off until a weekday. I was patient but became fed up with this location after they continuously went around my initial service request (wheel balance & wheel alignment). I figured this was the issue because my complaint was about the shaking of my steering wheel, floor base & seat! After having a Complete Auto Inspection at the 1st visit (4/26/2025), it was determined my wheel/hub bearing needed replacing, so it was replaced. I left thinking okay, maybe the wheel alignment & balance wasn't the issue. (It was never told to or confirmed w/ me, if it was or wasn't) So yes I'm thinking I'm good to go. Nope! The same issues occurred leaving me to take the car back with the same complaint on the MORNING of 4/29/2025. At this visit, another Complete Vehicle Inspection was performed & it was test driven, I was told it's the brake pads & rotors, but they didn't feel any vibrations/shaking. The parts needed to be ordered. Ok, cool let's get the order in, claim submitted to the warranty & fix it. Claim submitted, car was left over night (waiting on the parts) and picked up the following EVENING because the estimated time given (9:30am - 10am) didn't work out. Paid for the complete vehicle inspection, warranty covered everything else. I left with my car hoping this time the issue was fixed. Nope! We are now in May of 2025. I took my car back by to let them know the car is now squealing when I hit the breaks, louder than a school bus (which it wasn't doing before) & that the vibration is still there. Literally felt like a massage chair at the nail salon. That is when I was told they will take a look into it however I couldn't be seen for service that day because they were short staffed on technicians & busy. I took it back the next day, a Saturday & was told the technician wouldn't be in until Monday. At this point I'm irritated. After leaving there was a factory issue with the engine that needed serviced. That took a couple weeks. Got the car back, picked up where I left off with Firestone, I asked one of the technicians if he could at least come outside to look at & listen to the car. He did & said he didn't hear any of the squealing from the brakes. I asked him to verify what exactly was done when they last had my car, he told me that the rotors were replaced. Not the brake pads. I was completely confused because I was told they were replaced, with the rotors, I mean are they not suppose to be replaced with the rotors?? Apparently the warranty didn't cover the brake pads, only the rotors, but why wasn't I notified? I would've covered that on my end. I was offered a free brake inspection if I brought it back. THAT is when I left & decided to make an appointment with the Old Trolley Road location. Guess what! Another vehicle inspection only this time it was a Complete Vehicle Inspection PLUS. It was determined that my brake pads were cracked & rubbing against the new rotors. Ruining them & causing the squeaking sounds & vibrations due to uneven surfaces. Why would they place cracked brake pads on with new rotors? Anywho, new brake pads & rotors (Front & Rear) were needed and replaced. So there you have it. My 1 star review, what would you rate the services?

The Firestone on Folly has always been super busy and can never fit me in, so I started coming to the Savannah store.

Especially this was the Saturday before the "Snow" arrived in Charleston. It would have been easy to not offer service due to an early closure, but it was not. 5-Star service. Cb

This is a hard one to write. I've been a reliable customer for years, at least well over a decade…read more And I'm sad to say Gerald's isn't what it used to be. Let me start by saying the staff is always friendly. When you walk in, those working the registers, checking you in/out, etc. are always a pleasure to work with. While I have also had a positive experience with the techs, however, their attitude is not genuine. Recently I took my car in for new tires and an alignment. Long story short they put on the new wheels but said they couldn't do an alignment without first installing new balljoints, bushings and "might as well do the whole package and add control arms even though they're fine". Bringing what would have been a $600 job to $1,4000. Balljoints are $15-30, bushing $40- but if we wanted to do the "whole package" you're looking at roughly $200 max for a job that takes 1-2 hours. So where is the extra $600 coming from? Labor, right? Nope! Turns out Gerald's is overcharging an outrageous amount for parts. The numbers weren't adding up and I told them the new tires were fine and to bring my car down. I called a friend who has a renowned shop in Charleston for a second opinion because I had a gut feeling something was wrong. It was there he confirmed Gerald's was trying to screw me over and that my balljoints were perfectly fine and while the bushings had some wear, nothing was severe and they could have done the alignment. (Their shop successfully did it by the way with no issue and no issues popped up on my car from doing so. I also heard several horror stories from cars they had received after being at Gerald's.) I was able to inspect the balljoints and bushings myself and can confirm, everything was fine. Last year (January 2025) I had taken another car in for mechanical issues which I was overcharged for as well, so this isn't a new problem Gerald's is having. I was just hoping that would be the only time and that they might have fired those men who ripped me off. Instead, it looks like this is their new culture and they're digging their heels in. Get your tires done, sure, but anything else I would actively avoid them. They're right up there with Firestone on being some of the worst shops. Take their suggestions with a grain of salt and for the love of God get a second opinion before you let them take your money. I'm very fortunate I had someone in the industry I could call, but most places will do inspections for free or at minimal cost. It's worth it. Trust me!
