It's definitely an older place but it's very charming! Quiet, safe and has everything you need nearby. Staff: very friendly! The only negative was the bed. It was unbelievably uncomfortable. If you have a bad back, I would consider booking somewhere else purely because of the bed. If they replaced the beds, I'd give this place 5 stars! read more

I've been quite slow with this review - sorry! It's not that I had nothing to say about Fireside Inn. I actually have plenty of great things to say because Larry and Pam were nothing short of extraordinary. Duke D. and I wanted to go to Idyllwild for our anniversary in August and after some internet browsing, came upon Fireside Inn. For quite manageable prices (with a discount if you stay enough nights!), we were able to rent our own cabin. I spoke to Larry on the phone to make the reservation, and he made the booking process very smooth. When the time came to finally get there, we called ahead to say that we'd be there later in the night (around 10pm). He told us it wouldn't be a problem and if he was asleep, he'd leave all of the information in an envelope for us at the front. When we got there, he was still awake so he checked us in and boy was he helpful! With a detailed map (hand-drawn and with landmarks), he showed us the way to our cabin, Lark. When we got there, it felt like home away from home. They certainly thought of everything when they were furnishing the cabin. I'm guessing all of the other cabins are similar. A fully stocked kitchen in terms of utensils, cookware, serving ware, and such (we could have baked, fried, cooked, broiled, whatever if we wanted!). The bathroom had all the amenities including shampoo and body wash dispensers! We could rent movies from the front office and got guides/tips on what to do in Idyllwild. So much service! We'd both love to come back here for our next Idyllwild trip. read more

Would give a 0 star if possible. Reserved a room for Labor Day weekend at fireside inn months ago....then they call us 2 days before the reserved date and say hey we can no longer accommodate your reservation anymore supposedly one of their cabins is "flooded". Our options are to cancel the reservation or pick up a room at a much smaller other property that the manager manages. Sounds like a convenient money grab by them cause they know most ppl won't rent out that property. I try to call for more information to see if we can get another room or to even another day at the fireside inn. They don't pick up. The hotel lobby employee just tells me she will forward my inquiry. All of a sudden Niki the manager calls me when I'm out for dinner and then all of a sudden cancels our reservation?!? What kind of service is this? We put out trust in this fireside inn because we heard good things about it and now they cancel it after we booked it many months in advance?!? Now it's too late to book a place during this busy Labor Day weekend. Thanks for nothing!! Don't know if it's discrimination or what it is but would not recommend going to a place that can't honor its reservations and cancels a planned vacation without any explanation or notice. No explanation or attempt was made to further explain the situation or assist us despite this huge change in plans. Alas, no. We stayed in 'Warbler' and it was NOT nice. 1. There were cigarette butts all over the ground outside our cabin door. Ew. 2. All the outdoor chairs (front and back patio) were filthy. Ew. 3. The inside was very...old..and not in a cute shabby chic way. I didn't want to sit on the couch, it looked filthy. Ew. 4. You have to wash your own dishes. Uhm, I'm on vacation, I pay you the $100 / night so I don't have to wash dishes. Do you know how well a guest is going tow ash dishes? They ain't. Watch that episode of Hotel Impossible. Ew. 5. There are fake flowers everywhere and hideous weird artwork. The cabin would be better off without them hanging around gathering dust. 6. There were (cigarette burns??) in our blankets and the curtains were all..torn up?? I should have taken pictures, it's hard to explain but super gross/creepy how beat up the bedding was. 7. The toilet seat was old and junky. Take $10 out of the money I gave you and go buy a new toilet seat. They are cheap, OK?? The kitchenette is barely usable, it's so small. I will not come back here and if you do stay here, DO NOT stay in the Warbler. YUCK read more

This was a pretty nice room in a good location, we had a very nice time here but some of the details were frustrating. The key code didn't work; oh, you can't call directly, you have to leave a message and hope they get back to you. But the owner showed up promptly and let us in. Then the heater wouldn't start (foot of snow outside), left a message again. He came back and restarted the pilot a bit later. Our unit didn't have its own dedicated parking, and the overflow parking was full up. Inadequate snow removal didn't help with the parking situation. The wifi is nearly unusable, not uncommon in this type of place but it was supposedly wifiV6? One more thing: I'm not actually a fan of Keurig, but you might be disappointed if all you really get is an electric kettle and two packets of instant Starbucks. read more

First time here! My husband booked it and then I came on here and saw all the great reviews and I was excited. It lives up to the other reviews. Larry was very nice when we got here and the check in process was quick. We stayed in Blue jay which is right against the road so you can hear the street traffic, but being from a city that didn't bother us. The fully stocked kitchen came in use along with the fire place. We had previously stayed at their Lodge cabin and this time rented their Bluebird cabin, which is not in town but is across the street from their son's hotel property, The Bluebird Inn. The Fireside had slightly shaky Internet, but my husband, an IT consultant with Tech Brainy in Carlsbad, CA,, helped them fix it. He's going to come back another time and help Larry's son, Tony "Bear," at his property across the street to solidify his own property's wireless. My wife and I love Idyllwild and when we decide to come up from the valley for a visit, we know the best place to stay. We've stayed at the Fireside Inn a few times and have always been treated like family. During our most recent stay the lady up front checked us in and was as helpful as could be. There are movies to borrow during your stay and there's plenty to choose from. The cabin we chose this time was the Acorn directly across from the office. It was well stocked with everything you'd need and was clean, neat and tidy. While there is no maid service that's ok because there was only two of us and it's easy to keep clean. The king size bed gave us plenty of room and was super comfy. The closet has a shelf for your suitcase and plenty of hangars. Even a small chest of drawers in there for things you don't hang up. The bathroom was cramped for two but the shower gave us plenty of hot water and there were gel body wash and shampoo dispensers. Super convenient! While the living room didn't have a couch, there were three comfortable chairs and ottoman and it was nice. TV and DVD player worked well. The kitchen came stocked with cups, plates, bowls, silverware and cookware. Full size refrigerator you can fill with items from the local grocery store save money so you can cook in. Everything you'll need. We used the BBQ each evening we were there and it worked well. So many positive things to say about the Fireside Inn. Nothing negative. We really enjoyed out stay and wouldn't recommend anywhere else. Book your cabin! You won't be disappointed!! read more

We booked the Raccoon room but on our way up to Idyllwild we received a phone call that there was a problem with the room, so they upgraded us for the same price in the Oak Leaf room . The room was adorable and very clean. Yes it needs updating but it is decorated very cute! it is in walking distance to anything in town. If I was to complain about anything it would be that the bed was way too hard for us. Our car broke down when we arrived and thought we might have to stay an extra night and they said they would accommodate us but thought we should wait to see if our car would be ready or not before committing to another night and luckily it was repaired in time. FYI, they are the type of hotel that everything is ran remotely, no one is in the office, and it worked perfectly...we didn't need to have anyone on site. Riley was wonderful and all of his recommendations were excellent! Despite the car breaking down, to Idyllwild Garage, all in all a great trip!! read more

My husband and I have been coming here 1-2 times per year for the past 9 years. The 3 stars are for our more recent experiences, since Larry and Pam have stopped managing. It was the absolute BEST when they were hands on. The Last time we stayed there was no hot water. For hours. We actually had to cancel our dinner reservations after hiking because we could not shower. This time there is no ice. Anywhere. In the entire lodge. Have you ever stayed at even a motel that doesn't have ice?! overall, the hospitality has declined making us give other cabins a try in the future. We had the acorn cabin. The experience here was absolutely what we needed, quiet and a fresh cold breeze. No snow but there was some piles leftover from the previous storm. The accommodations were very comfortable. The bed was huge and soft with a down comforter and lots of down pillows. Plenty of seating. The kitchen was fully stocked for cooking. We had brought everything for breakfast and a crockpot meal to last us. So it was absolutely perfect. Coffee maker as well. Fully stocked with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash and hand soap. So no need to bring those items as well as a normal hair dryer under the sink. We didn't need a thing! I know this is under new ownership and the lady my husband had been speaking with while we were in the process of choosing to book here was extremely pleasant to work with. I know there's a transition and growing pains in that. So I'm giving this 5 stars even though there is some room to grow. We were out of lotion, there was dirty Kleenex in the bed behind the pillows, there was dirt inside the silverware bin and the oven was loaded with old food on the bottom that could have easily been missed from the previous tenant. The walls are covered in dust in the bedroom and need just a quick sweeping. It's little things that could have taken just a bit more time to make a huge difference to another visitor. For me, I'm easy to please and everything was great. Just thought you'd want to know where issues were. We will be back and we can't wait. Also this location is close to the town to walk! Just blocks. So no need to drive if you don't want to. Pet friendly with additional deposit For dogs. Great great great place! It's camping at its finest lol read more

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Fireside Inn over Christmas 2015. It was a perfect weekend, and the Fireside Inn had a lot to do with that. We showed up late Christmas Eve to be greeted with a very warm smile and personal tour around the place. The Innkeeper immediately told us about the free DVD rentals (each cottage has a DVD player) and that she had already turned on the heat in our unit since it was so cold out. The cottages are small (as to be expected), but much roomier than the pictures make it look. I was very impressed with the room that we had for her and I and our two dogs. The Inn is only a couple minute walk from everything you could want to do downtown, which was very convenient. There were plenty of basic dishes for eating and cooking simple meals, however I recommend that you bring any specialty cook wear that you could want. We brought a Crock Pot and large pot for cooking chili and spiked cider, which we would not have been able to make had we not brought ours. We will definitely be staying here again. read more

We went to the Eagle's Nest and saw they had a promotion - purchase two nights and have the third night free. Driving up from Palm Springs for an early Father's Day weekend, we felt we would arrive too late after a long week of work and told them we only wanted one night, but we were told we couldn't get one night only. So we changed our schedule to make sure we followed the promotion, taking two nights and letting them know we might take the third night as well. Fast forward Sunday morning, we learn that we needed to leave because they booked it for someone else! No apologies, no offers for a night somewhere else or at another time... Overall, the cottage was old but nice, however the lack of customer service skills is horrendous! read more

Had the pleasure of staying here for the first time last weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Owners Larry and Pam are very friendly and accommodating, and seem to anticipate just about everything that a visitor might need during their stay. The only thing we needed to bring was our clothes, cameras, and mittens. My sister, nephews, and I stayed at the Eagle's Nest (http://thefireside-inn.com/properties/cabins/eagle/), their largest cabin, which is about a mile south of their office and cottages on HIghway 243, across the street from the Bluebird Cabins, which their son manages. It's a clean and comfortably-furnished two-story cabin that could easily sleep up to ten people. As the largest, it is also the most expensive, but the smaller cabins and cottages are reasonably priced. There was over a foot of snow on the ground during our stay, and the nights got down to 30 degrees, but we were quite comfortable and warm in our cabin. I look forward to visiting again soon. Cozy and comfortable. This place is exactly what you're looking for when you think of getting away to the mountains. We first stayed here on New Years Eve during one of the biggest snow storms I've ever seen on the west coast. We couldn't have been more thrilled. This time we needed to escape the heat of Palm Springs and came up for a day trip that turned in to a mini vacation. Our room feels like a private cabin and the owner has been absolutely amazing. We was so excited to find this place on line. We just got back from staying in Idyllwild this weekend. These cottages are so cute, clean, affordable and perfect if you want to disappear from the city life. On top of all the above we even got to take our lab with us for only an extra 10 bucks a day. Pam and Larry were awesome. They were even nice enough to bring us some BBQ utensils and move the BBQ closer to our cottage when we first arrived. At the office they have DVDs, books and games that you can loan out (no charge). We also had a nice balcony that we got to relax, have dinner and just enjoy the sounds and smells of nature. You do have to be aware of the squirrels while on the balcony. They like to climb up the tall trees and tear a part pine cones and drop down what they no longer want. I had a few pieces of pine cones land in my wine and a few on my head. It was actually quite entertaining. It was just a great place to escape the city life and just veg out and relax with my dog and man! read more

I just spent a few days in Palm Springs and as usual I did a short stay at Idyllwild first. I really like the Knotty Pine cabins as listed below, but this time, due to the management at KP not being available when I wanted to check in, I traveled over to Fireside where I had stayed some time ago with a couple of good friends. Even though I had planned staying at Knotty Pines, I had a wonderful experience in my little cabin at Fireside. The space was lovely and comfortable.I loved all the wood paneling, the setting... The space was tiny (I was there by myself, so I did not need a lot of space) yet it had a small, yet full sweet kitchen, a little dining-eating area, a comfortable bathroom. It also had of course, the fireplace, television with VCR, free wi-fi, It was just, well, adorable. ...The managers were super sweet as well. All this for under one-hundred $$. There was only one thing that bothered me during this stay. It was a warm weekend, yet some of the visitors at the inn decided to light a fire in their cabin, and ended up smoking up the whole space (meaning outdoors.) I had my windows opened it crept into my space, and it really bothered me. The smoke was giving me a sore throat and a headache. I actually went and complained to the owner/manager who was really pleasant, and told me that they were working on getting the situation under control. He suggested exploration of Idyllwild's wonders while the smoke subsided, and I did as suggested. When I returned, the smoke was gone. I would give five stars if it weren't for that "smoky" situation. A little suggestion, please give visitors some guidance and advice on making fires at the time of arrival. I know I am no expert at using fireplaces, & would appreciate the guidance. :-) As usual, I had a wonderful time at Idyllwild, it is such a wonderful place to relax my at times overworked psychologist mind... read more

The Fireside Inn cottages were great. Our room was right on the street (the Pinecone) but you would've never known that because there was not street traffic noise at all. Extremely quaint and cozy albeit a small room. There was plenty of utensils to cook a full meal in the the morning. I made my boyfriend a tofu breakfast scramble and toast and we ate it outside on our little patio. They had a good DVD selection to watch movies in the room. The bed was comfie. I would stay hear again, although probably in a room away from the street next time because the views are better in a few of the other cottages. Larry was very very nice and made us feel very welcome. :-) Oh, and it's walking distance to all the restaurants and shops. That was a big plus. read more

Stayed there March 11-14, 2014. Woke up on March 13 to no electricity. Owners claimed it would be back on shortly but could not say when. Gave us free fire logs. Power was out most of the day; not sure how long total but came back on around 2 p.m. So room was not truly usable for more than half of one day. No compensation was offered. At the Idyllwild visitor center down the street, we learned that the power outage was a scheduled and that everyone in the affected area has been notified in writing in advance. We were not told of the planned outage when making our reservation, nor at time of check-in. We suspect they withheld the information out of fear of losing our business if they had told us. read more

Stayed here for a birthday trip, booked 2 nights and found we actually could have 3 for the same price with their deal. We stayed in the Pine Cone cottage which is closest to the road, a concern based on a previous review. Yes we could hear traffic but it's quieter than home and certainly not a busy road so didn't disturb or bother us. The cabin was a little dated and in need of some basic DIY repairs but for us that added to the appeal. Nice fireplace (we did have to work hard to find somewhere to buy fire wood - the nearest place didn't have any dry), small but sufficiently equipped kitchen, tub and shower and small deck area. We didn't use them but there are BBQs and patio space available. Good selection of free 'rental' DVDs. Pet friendly as is most of the town which is a few minutes walk away. Just be aware that the cabins are joined and the walls are pretty thin meaning you can hear the neighbors. We would certainly stay here again. read more

My first time at Idyllwild and I had a great weekend here staying at the Fireside Inn. Larry made us feel right at home. When we walked through the door he greeted us warmly and was really patient when we got lost looking for the main office. We stayed at the Hawk and everything was perfect there as well. The layout could be a bit better, but we managed to rearrange the furniture how we needed and of course moved it back when before check out. It was a nice experience there and a very rustic feel. My favorite thing about this cabin are the wood knots. My bf and I found a wood knot that looked EXACTLY like a St. Bernard. It was amazing...once you see it, you can't unsee it. I would definitely recommend and come back. read more

Cute little place. Our room was cozy and had all the basics we needed including a small kitchen. Beware of ants and do not leave ANY food out, even water. One down side was our room was right on the road and the head of bed was at the window. So it was noisy. However, the owner (I think) was absolutely lovely. She allowed us to have a late check out because our nine month old was napping. We greatly appreciated it. Bed was comfy and we loved the fireplace. Great location about .3 miles from town. We have stayed here at least 3 times over the last 3 years. It is a quaint group of cabins within walking distance of downtown Idyllwild. We booked the Acorn cabin which is where we usually stay as it is just perfect for my husband, myself and our dog. The new owners that took over in December, asked us if we would stay in the Lodge House (at no extra charge) so they could accommodate some construction workers that are working on the road. They said it is a much nicer cabin. We agreed to change, but they forgot to mention that it has a spiral staircase to the loft (which our dog freaked out about). The cabins are old but we are told they have a lot of work ahead of them. The Lodge House had all the amenities you need, however, the shower needs major renovation. The Fireside Inn in general has a nice area with picnic tables and BBQ's for use. The pond had a single fish in it, and although a pump was working, it was almost empty. Luckily we were able to catch someone to let them know and they filled it half way. The owners were very scarce. It would be hard to contact them if you had any issues. They are working on the cabins which is a good sign. When I went to drop off the key the day we left, although no one was in the office, I saw through the window many new pots and pans, so can only assume they are getting ready to stock the cabins with them. I did miss the DVD's that the old owners had in the office that you could rent. Would I stay here again? Yes as I believe the new owners are working on fixing up the cabins. They have only owned it for 4 months. However, they need to make sure they are accessible to their renters. read more

Larry and Pam are just wonderful. If they are full at Fireside Inn, they also own Blue Bird Cottage in which their son runs. I've stayed at a few different cottages and cabins and it really is a great cozy feeling in all of them. I know their site isn't all luxurious like some others but it has all the information you need. I've gone the last few years and have tried to look at other places but always come back here since they are so friendly and it is so close to all the restaurants and where all the fun festivities are. They usually have great promotions going on and give military discounts if you're a veteran ask! I will continue to stay here. I am excited for Jazzfest next week there!! Woo hoo to Fireside Inn! We visited a few weeks ago, a huge snowstorm hit and the Meadowlark cabin kept us warm and we were able to walk to the state park and go snow shoeing. Such a fun place to be! The kitchen was nice and fully equipped. I was worried that because it's pet friendly that it might be stinky and full of allergens, but we didn't have a problem with that at all. They have new owners and the woman was rude and not very helpful...We had no hot water, no one was around to help you out when you needed something like toilet paper, clean towels etc. there was supposed to have kitchen table but no they had to go get one and no fire poker among other things. Price was $286.00 bucks so I would expect more. I love the old owners they were so cool so my advice is to stay at Idyllwild Inn or somewhere else! One other thing we saw people trying to check in yesterday looking all around for someone to help them out... SMH Okay I am done now.... read more

Inaccurate and even more interesting. If the unit was already booked why were they selling it again? We had mentioned the special and the third night at booking. Regardless of the outcome, what was clear was the lack of customer service demonstrated when we called. It is sad to see when owners cannot think of multiple options to help you (eg. We can give you a night free in the future, or anything else, there are many different options but none were considered) and that is too bad. Stayed at the Bear's Bungalow a couple months ago and loved it with the exception of the hard mattress. My husband loves a firm mattress so no complaints from him. The couch was incredibly comfortable and the fireplace was probably my favorite thing about the place. It is rustic but that's our style. I stayed in the Warbler this weekend, and was impressed all the way through. The cabin was comfortable, clean, and the perfect size. Nice little kitchen (so we didn't have to spend extra money or calories eating out for every meal!), living room, bedroom, bathroom, and of course the back deck. The owner was very very friendly. She was sweet enough to help us pick out movies (free lease) and suggest things/places to go. The best part is that Fireside is dog friendly! I was able to enjoy my relaxing weekend with my puppy... nothing beats that. The only thing they ask is that you don't leave pets alone in the cabins, but Idyllwild is such a dog friendly town, it is so easy to take your dog with you everywhere you go, hikes included. read more
