Quirky, cool and the perfect retreat to get some fresh air & hiking done in the San Bernardino National Forest. Highly recommended if you're a fan of cannabis and wish to partake in the privacy of your chalet (Room 420). Service was great and the breakfast waffles were delicious. The closest food options are about a 10 minute drive into town, but fortunately there are delivery services for Idyllwilde if you're lazy or too lit to drive from Hicksville Pines (lots of CHP along 243 so don't even risk it). How have I not written a review of this place??? Wow I am slipping. I've been a sporadic patron of this place since it was first purchased and before its transformation into the awesomeness it is today. Before they converted, I spent a snowy day and night there, and since I have stayed a few more times - I even drove up for a family day with the kids to check out the upgrades years ago. This place is so cool, when we were planning our wedding (which, because of covid happened via zoom!) this was the place we were hoping to book for the event. The pricing is amazing and the quirkiness is just what we love. The most recent visit I rented the 420 room so I could partake in some gardening inside rather than just outside. The black lights and sunken bed were...intense lol I utilized the Jacuzzi, the archery range, and the lovely breakfast plate, not to mention the awesomeness of being in a room with stoner movies, a vending machine, and a complimentary nug for good measure. I can't wait to go back - and I will be this week. read more

Just stayed here this past weekend, and I must say I loved every moment. Went here for a little gateway with my boyfriend for our anniversary, we stayed at the Dita and the Third Man rooms. Both rooms had their own unique feel to it. The staff was friendly and provided free breakfast. There is a rec room where you can hang out and play games, listen to music and enjoy some pinball and games. Would recommend for anyone who is looking to just take a mini vacation somewhere cute and unique! read more

The first half of our trip was great, the check in girl was extremely kind & friendly, had great customer service and overall gave us an amazing start to our trip. We booked a room, we loved the game room, hot tub and all the amenities. We checked out on time, turned in our keys and went to get our complimentary breakfast. There was a different person at the front desk today. He of rolled his eyes when we came in to eat and ignored us which is totally fine. He left I assume to go do other tasks while we ate. I made friendship bracelets as we waited for him to come back. We had such a good time that when we saw the sign that said 'extend your stay' we were actually wanting to stay another night, book in right then & there, buy merch and continue our day. As he came back we were curious about the archery and asked about it. He actually made us extremely uncomfortable and asked 'There no more time for that, why are you still here ? Check out is at 11. You guys need to get off the property now." I was a little and shock and kind of was like 'oh so sorry we weren't aware' we do apologize that we might have forgotten that part in the listing, but we were waiting for him to come back to book another stay so we thought it would be alright to stick around and at least ask. Clearly not a salesman, he shooed us off and didn't give was a chance to speak with him. It was disheartening because there was another couple not even 10 minutes before that he was being extremely nice to, let them buy merch etc. It put a really put a damper ending to our trip. We were considering coming back, but unfortunately we looked through their reviews and had the same experience a couple people had with their shortness and seems pattern of rudeness. While we understand what time check out time is, if we really needed us to be out by a certain time he could have politely reminded us before breakfast or while we were eating or before he left the room. He could have said it in so many different ways and still could have been polite. Telling us to "get off the property" was extremely rude and in poor taste. I'm not sure if it's because we are people of color, but felt pretty racial motivated. We left very quickly and were very upset at how we were treated. He could have asked if we wanted to extend our stay, he could have politely reminded us of our time frame during anytime during or before the breakfast. If this person doesn't enjoy working in hospitality I argue that he should really consider his position at this job I feel that it is more important to have a returning customer than someone who only comes once due to a bad experience. My boyfriend and I were having a good time, being respectful of the space, stayed most of the time in our room so I'm not sure why he was rude to us, but not the other couple. We would have been happy to pay without feeling threatened or left on our way if we were not allowed. People come here to relax and unwind, I would imagine it is his job to politely reminded us the guest of rules if need be, and it would be nice for him to be kind instead of full of contempt. People will not come back if they are spoken to rudely. We messaged the owner and they were apologetic and even offered "how can we make this right " and then ghosted us. If you like being timed while you eat and kicked off a property and spoken to like a dog then you probably shouldn't stay here. Yikessss I've never came to a place happy and then left upset. You're better off booking at one of their local competitors with friendlier service. read more

Love this place!! I stayed in "The Dita", a room designed by Dita Von Teese, and it was amazing!! The room was adorable, the view from the patio was beautiful, and the bed! It was the most incredible bed ever. The innkeeper Michelle was such a sweetheart and even came to my room to help me with the oven when my tiny arms couldn't reach the gas switch The rec room was so cool, loved all the retro arcade games. The staff here are so sweet and kind. From checking in to just chatting, they're welcoming and cool. I stayed in the 420 room for a few days. The only negative I have is that the living room for me is not comfortable. The couch had no support or comfort whatsoever(very dingy look and feel to it). Which means I spent no time in there watching movies or hanging out. This is why I booked this room...that was my plan, get loaded, relax and watch movies. So I spent 90% of my time in the bed with my laptop(thank goodness I brought it . Yes, there are many other amenities that are on the grounds, but that's not what I personally went for. With that being said, idk if I would want that cabin again. read more

Finally got to return to Hicksville Pines! This time we stayed in the 420. David was a very friendly and helpful innkeeper. Breakfast and the rec room were so fun (they were closed last time we came over the pandemic). The outdoor camping kitchen is well-organized and easy to use. Got lots of love from the resident kitties, Norma and Ed. Definitely want to keep coming back and getting to check out more of the chalets. We had the best time at Hicksville Pines! Staff is friendly and really take care of you. Upon arriving, you get a tour of the grounds and the room you are booked for. Loved the hospitality here! We stayed in the Dita where you immediately feel like you just stepped backstage at one of Dita Von Teese's burlesque shows. (Plus there is a hot tub and claw foot bathtub! You just relax into the serene, peaceful vibe of the area and even indulge in 420 friendly activities. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and they are very accommodating if you are vegetarian. There are a few fun activities you can partake in. There is a fun retro game room, ping pong table and fire pit hut. They have 2 sweet cats named Ed and Norma that roam the property. :) Can't wait for our next trip here, it's a wonderful time Indeed! read more

This is such a fun and unique stay! We choose the Dita Room to celebrate our anniversary and it was perfect! (Only thing we wish was in the room was a TV lol) But the bathtub was heavenly, the bed was so cozy, and the hot tub was perfect for the chillier nights. The Bad: The Dolly Parton door hinge is a hassle to lock- it doesn't lock unless another person lifts the door while you turn the key which is pretty annoying. The haunted mansion room could use a few updates- maybe one more lamp since it's very dark and even fixing the chips in the bed frame would be a nice touch! Lastly we noticed the kids coloring pages were AI generated which was disappointing. In fact a lot of stuff in Idyllwild is AI generated. I assume it's because it's ran by an older crowd and older folks LOVE AI but it really has a bad look and is so easy to spot. Please hire a real artist to design your coloring pages. The Good: Breakfast was delicious and the staff is very kind. The rec room is very nicely set up and is super fun to hang out in. Of course the themed aspect of everything is great. Overall: Great but could use updating. I would recommend the owners stay at The Victorian in Los Alamos and take some notes on how to keep a themed hotel updated while keeping its charm. read more

I loved staying a couple nights in the 420 room. I think it was exactly what I needed for a solo weekend getaway. The property had cool hangout areas outside and I didn't spend time in the rec room but I think it would've been a fun time especially for movie nights. In the summer the AC slightly cools down the room during the day but at night it cool down a lot. It was cozy, and the black lights in the room added to the psychedelic experience, it was fun to just lay down in bed and look at all the art work. the breakfast each morning was an added bonus. The décor is pure John Waters fever dream--equal parts trash and treasure--and I mean that as the highest compliment. The vibes? Impeccably weird. The property? Like someone dropped a retro pop-culture time capsule in the woods and said, "Let's make it campy and gay." The innkeeper? An absolute gem who somehow manages to run a hotel, serve breakfast, and maintain a vibe that's equal parts rad and chill. And the complimentary coffee + breakfast? So good I almost wrote it a love letter. Met the resident royalty, Eduardo and Norma, the sweet cat duo who clearly own the place. I was merely their guest. Highlights: in ground hot tub, rec room replete with free play arcade games, and all the greatest jukebox tunes to roll a joint (and smoke) to. Short drive to everywhere we wanted to go. The concept, themes and decor are amazing. The staff is super friendly and available, the complimentary breakfast is delicious. There are a lot of amazing things about this place and I'm glad I got to experience it. I cannot stress how wonderful the staff is. The reason I'm leaving 3 stars is because there were a lot of things that were out of order. Most of the games in the rec room were not working (if I'm remembering correctly, there was one pinball game, a hockey type foosball game and the shuffle board that WERE working) and the juke box was also out of order so we didn't really stay in there for longer than 5 minutes, which was disappointing. They did give us the option to connect our phone to a speaker, but there's no charm in that. I was looking forward to spending time in the communal spaces. The cover to the communal hot tub was broken. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and the door to the bathroom had no handle or latch, so it was a swinging door with a hole where the handle should be. We also found a sock in the couch from a previous guest, and an earring an a safety pin in the shag carpeting. There is a private hot tub in that room, and when we wanted to turn on the jets we realized that those didn't work either. If everything was working and repairs were made this would absolutely be the best place in the world to stay. We spent 3 nights here and had a good time, but I personally would not book again. read more

We stayed twice and will go there again, because each room in this hotel is a separate universe:) I really like the attention to detail, vintage interior items and the attentiveness of the staff to everything that happens. Very unique and fun experience. 420 Room was very trippy and retro. Loved the sunken bed with beautiful Mountain View's. Very cozy "downtown" very close by with all the amenities you'd want. Next time I'll just buy some groceries there instead of bringing some from LA. The grounds are pretty small, but a definite vibe. They have the worst service ever. They will charge you xtra for any non sense reason. I was charged 250$ for not covering the hot tub after I was done using it. They hot tub was not covered when I went to use it and they never mentioned it when I was checking in and also the hot tub had hair band in it which means they don't clean or sanitize their hot tub. I would of given a 5 star, but we did get the honeymoon suite to sit in the heart shaped bathtub, but the jets did not work so we didn't get to use the tub, and unfortunately the hot tub had lots of styrofoam from the cover that was falling apart in the water , so wasn't able to enjoy that, but other than that the place was really nice and peaceful .. Dolly 8 tracks, records, and an Awesome Dolly pinball machine in the room. Big King Bed. Mondo trasho room with round bed and outfits to play with. Beautiful mountain setting so peaceful and relaxing. Staff is available and welcoming. Quirky little cottages house the rooms. Check-in was easy, the amenities are awesome (just be patient with some of the vintage games in the rec room), and the place is overall super lovely! Breakfast is delicious, they accommodate different dietary needs, and every room is super cozy!
