4 Piece Barbecue Chicken Tenders with 1 Side of Fries
Robert P.

Just recently found Firebird Piri Piri Grill after having been open only 2 months. Apparently Piri Piri is an African chili used to enhance the dishes. Firstly, it has a nice open airy feel with 3 tables if you decide to dine in with a pretty cool large old world mural on the wall. However, I'll imagine most as I, will consider this a takeout spot as it is a little small. The order taker was super friendly and especially helpful when I told him it was my 1st time here. I selected a 4 piece barbecue sauce chicken tender option that comes with fries and he suggested the fries dusted with the Piri Piri seasoning blend. When my order came up, it was in a rather large bag and it was moderately heavy. I was hugely surprised! Inside were the largest juicy chicken tenders I've ever had...covered nicely in a delicious barbecue sauce with a huge bag of hot dusted seasoned fries! The smell was incredible. Even my neighbor said the fries were very delicious. There was also a side of ranch dressing and the namesake Piri Piri dipping sauce which is truly flavorful. I got the mildest of 4 levels of heat and it had quite a punch, so I can't imagine what the heat levels are for higher other 3, but I'm sure I won't be trying them anytime soon! Overall, for the price point paid, this was a HUGE DEAL for a very nice meal and I even had leftovers! Will most definitely be hitting up the Firebird Piri Piri Grill often!

A new place in the neighborhood. It has plenty of casual options to choose from the menu. My first time at this place and I ordered the cheeseburger meals. I'll may try the piri piri chicken next time and they serve all halal meat too.

The loaded fries are my go to - best in uptown

One of my favorite spots to eat in the neighborhood all the food is and the prices are fair for large portions!

We got bubble tea and they were so good

Food is okay, service is alright, but they don't listen and fuck up your order from time to time, ambience is considerably clean at times

This sandwich had a nice crispy plump fried chicken breast w/pickles, shredded cabbage, hot honey & spicy mayo on a bun. This was a delicious blend of the fried chicken w/the crunch of the cabbage & pickle & the hot honey & spicy mayo. This was an excellent choice that we both enjoyed the sandwich. I asked for an extra side of sauce to dip it in & that helped significantly. We did LOVE all the sides. The mac & cheese was soooo good (and I am hard to impress when it comes to mac & cheese. It tasted way better than it looks). The brussel sprouts were perfectly crispy & not soggy at all. The fries were seasoned great and were sooo good dipped in the ranch. Even though the wrap was disappointing, I would still go back and try their chicken sandwich instead or one of their salads!

My Old Faithful sometimes had the Dirty Mac special, and when it didn't, I'd order the individual components and assemble it myself. Cue some giddy excitement when the same is part of this location's permanent menu. You know I went for it, but was tremendously disappointed. To start, the tender was too small on its own, but doubly so when considering the amount of macaroni and cheese. Though, the little bits and pieces of tender I received were great. As for the M&C, this was a letdown on two fronts: first, the sauce was watery, second, it was cold! To add insult to injury, cold mac plus warm tender = cold tender. While the restaurant was not at all busy at the time, this is no excuse to serve cold food. Then came the fries: I appreciate that these were fresh, hot, and cooked well. They also had some of their own seasoning to add flavor, but didn't go far enough due to a stunning lack of salt! The location was clean and bright, with loads of happy colors on their walls. The service wasn't Michelin-star quality, but perfectly fine for a fast-casual spot. Final verdict: Do not use the Lakeview location as a barometer of Hot Chi's quality, for they can make amazing food. However, if you seek it here, you will not find.

The restaurant is small, almost like a tiny barn, with a walk-through kitchen where I can see the food being made while the smell of fried chicken fills the air. It has that casual, no-frills feel where the food does all the talking. The staff were super nice and welcoming, too. I ordered the Hot Honey Fried Chicken Sandwich, and oh my god... this thing was a sweet and spicy mess in the best way possible. The chicken was tender and juicy inside, with a crispy fried coating giving it a satisfying crunch. The hot honey was what really brought everything together. It had a sweet, sticky flavor up front, followed by a gentle heat that kicked in a moment later. It wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, but it definitely had enough of a kick to keep things interesting. There was also a creamy sauce that balanced the heat and adding another layer of flavor. Every bite had something going on, the flavors played off each other so well and nothing felt out of place. It was messy, sticky, and absolutely worth it.

At this point, I've had two experiences with this Fry the Coop location…read more My first was generally positive. The chicken and fries were hot and fresh, and the sandwich had some appreciable heat. The only critique I could levy was that by virtue of being twice fried, both were very crispy, crispier than I would have liked. My second experience was less tasty and more chaotic. Walking in, one of the booths looked like a microburst had gone through. The cashier let me know that they were slammed with pickup orders, and that getting my food would take ~15-20 minutes. Since the cooks were managing a massive influx of orders, I didn't want to pull them away from their duties, and asked the manager to be called out from the back. I brought it to their attention, and it was promptly cleaned. However, it may have been wise to keep a better eye on things, for seeing such chaos almost led to me walking out and not returning. When it comes to the food, this time around it was disappointing. Despite food constantly coming fresh out the fryer, my fries and sandwich felt and tasted as if they'd been sitting out for 10-15 minutes. While I appreciate the need to fulfill pickup orders, allowing the food of a customer waiting in person to go ignored feels inappropriate. Further, despite being ordered as "hot", the sandwich was a medium at best (I have a high heat tolerance, so YMMV). The service overall has been fine for a fast-casual spot. Not award-winning or meme'd for their hospitality (*ahem* Chick-fil-A) but acceptable for what it is. The vibe is on the smaller side, with three booths. There is a very slightly retro, classic-rock-like feel to the vibe. Final verdict: My two experiences have fallen short for me. The first led to food that was overly crisp, and the second felt like food I might as well have had delivered. While not bad, there is no shortage of chicken shops in Chicagoland that have a superior, more consistent product.
