Not overly impressed. Nice setup and decor. The hostess sucked. She led us to an unwashed table with a used napkin left on it. After I pointed out the napkin, she apologized, picked it up with her bare hands and sat back down to talk to her male coworker. After a few minutes of us standing there, we approached her to ask if she was actually going to clean the table since we did not know who or what was on the used napkin. She never came back. A young man approached us a few minutes later amd offered to clean the table and have us properly seated. He saved this place from losing business because we were headed out! He also ended up being our server and was wonderful. His name is Christian. He also had the common sense to give us kid menus seeing as how we had children. The hostess did not offer any. She was seated, being chatty woth her coworker when we got there and acted like we were an inconvenience for her to wipe the table down or give us 3 kid menus! The food was mediocre...steamed shrimp lost flavor after the shell came off, spinach was slimy, adult beverages were great. Don't know if they have new ownership or what but this place is the pits... It took our server at least 5-10 minutes to take our order and it was like 10 ppl in the whole restaurant and about 4 servers wiping tables and walking around. Staff was friendly but extremely slow. Not sure if they're new or what... The food is average at best, reminds me of say Ruby Tuesday or TGIF, nothing like in the past. Ordered the southwest egg rolls and salad and they were ok at best. Food was greasy and lacked any originality. The bartender was extremely rude to me and argued on whether or not I had a tab since he refused to take the spelling for my last name. I tried to order a cocktail at the bar. Big mistake! The bartender didn't know the drink and when I asked the manger he was just as clueless. My wife and I actually went here twice. We liked the decor and thought that perhaps the first experience was a fluke and that we would (generously) give them a second chance...a chance they didn't deserve. First, my wife and I are generally satisfied with most restaurants we go to. We are not that hard to please. In both cases we experienced bland or awful food and poor service. On one visit I had a "grilled" chicken sandwich and chicken looked like it had been boiled. It was supposed to a bourbon sauce on it but it was totally bland. I asked the waiter for some barbeque sauce for the sandwich. After waiting several minutes, I noticed he was standing and talking to some other patrons who he obviously knew. I waved him over and reminded him that my food was getting cold and he finally got it. The second time we went was no better...water glasses weren't refilled when empty, dishes weren't cleared and my wife's mahi mahi wrap was tasteless...worse...it made her ill. The owner of this place did a good job of building a nice place...he just hasn't got the restaurant part down. I recommend that you stay away from this place. On my second visit I decided to do a review. Although service is a little slow, due in part to the bartender doing double duty as a server back up as well, the food was excellent. It seems they might have redone the menu a bit based on previous reviews, the pizza is great, the sandwiches and wraps are all pretty tasty. Haven't tried a burger yet but with a $15 for $30 groupon going on right now I might try and go back again soon. Beer selections are excellent and prices are about what you'll find anywhere in Montgomery county, $4 yuengling, $6 other stuff. The do have pitchers ranging from $15-$20 and a fun beer sampler of 4 5oz cups of beer for $10. read more

I've been here a few times and never left satisfied. The food is okay, normal pub food. But, my last visit was just to watch the college games and have a drink or two since it was close to work. It took about 15 minutes before any of the bartenders acknowledged me (not to be confused with taking my order). I met a friend there who arrived before me and assumed that the 3-4 empty glasses and dirty napkins in front of him were his, but he said they were there when he sat down and no one bothered to take the glasses or clean the area. This place is really not as bad as the reviews make it sound. I had absolutely no interest in eating here. In fact, I hate this kind of food. However, I was meeting a bunch of friends and their very young children. My friends picked the place and I read the Yelp reviews on the way there in preparation for a bad experience. However, our server was a very pleasant and sweet young guy who took care of us well and provided service with a smile. Per his recommendation, I ordered the Mahi Mahi wrap which I thought was actually pretty good. The stout beer I ordered (their own brew) tasted like water, unfortunately. It's time for lunch in Silver Spring. You walk into the newly opened Fire Station 1 restaurant. If it weren't for the tables and chairs sitting out front, you might actually think it was a fire station, and at one time, it was. The interior is open and airy. The space is large and includes a loft area with more seating. You have time to take in your surroundings as you wait for a waiter to service your table. It takes a few minutes, but when service does come, it's friendly. The menu isn't gourmet, but it's a step above the standard. Chicken in the California wrap is dry, but the creamy texture of the avocado is enough to keep you content. Sundried tomato adds a nice, tart touch. The crab cake sandwich is filled with more crab than you'd expect for the cost that you're paying. For someone who might not regularly make that order for french fries, it is advised that you disregard that decision in favor of your tastebuds. The outside of each thick slice is crisp and buttery, the inside light and fluffy. Fire Station 1 Restaurant and Brewing Co. has the potential to be Silver Spring's newest hangout spot, with a bar that serves wine and beer from 12 taps and 20 bottles, including offerings from the local Hook & Ladder. The building has history and appeal, but table service could use work and the food isn't anything you haven't seen before. It all melds to make a satisfactory experience, but nothing more than that. read more

When I didn't have cable at my apartment I used to walk here for Monday night football games.This place is your average to below average sports bar. I've never ordered any food from here that was very good. The prices aren't particularly great. I don't think I've ever seen a pretty girl at the bar. The reason why this place is getting two stars is because of one crappy waitress. Every time we eat there I REFUSE to have her as our waitress. Every time it's a horrible experience. I'm not sure what her name is but she is an older Caucasian lady with brown/reddish hair, usually serves everyone outside. I've seen this woman sit down while tables wait for their check, text on the job, answer her cellphone on the job. Not to mention she is rude and never really cares to pay close attention to our order. Almost every time we order from her something gets sent back. One time she refused to serve us because the host sent us outside to pick her own table and we weren't "assigned one" So we ended up having the bartender with the beard serve us. It was far better service then she's ever provided. The bartender who was also tending to people inside was coming in and out to check on us. He was very attentive and polite. it's good, not great. I'm all about supporting Silver Spring, and this place has a cool feel. It's just that it's ..... good. Nothing special... other than the mango martini....seriously I could stick an iv of that up to me. But I digress... The food is standard pub/sports bar fare. The hot wings are good and the calamari too. They have a good selection of pizzas and burgers. Also loads of beer. Inside you can watch sports from a number of tv's, or hang outside for a chill ambience and people watching. The service was good and they appear to have a good crowd of people. I've visited this establishment about 4 times since Fire Station 1 opened, most recently on 1/27. The bar boasts both MD-based wine and beers although no mention of food origin is provided. Most draft beer is reasonably priced at $4-5 per glass. We enjoyed both the oatmeal stout and the Avenue golden ale - the Avenue Golden ale is quite tasty. The only MD-based wines are from the Sugarloaf Mountain winery. The menu offers several vegetarian options (I have vegetarian friends) and the queso sticks are an enjoyable diversion from the typical mozzarella sticks on a bar menu. I tried the 3-alarm chili which came loaded with cheese, onions,and sour cream. The chili had a good bite and came with a side of jalapeno corn bread. Although on prior visits I have had issues with the timeliness of the service (both at the bar and at a table), but on our last visit I had no problems at all with the bar service. I would definitely visit this establishment again, but will admit that the service is unpredictable. read more

We were looking for a place to eat the last time we were in the area. A huge fan of breweries, we saw the "brewing company" sign and decided to stop in. Don't be fooled, on the night we arrived there were no house brews on tap! I'm not so sure they brew anything there. Very shady way to market. Disappointed, we sat and decided to order food. It was 8:30 PM on a Saturday and we were given the watered down "late night menu." Really? We ordered the potato skins which were, of course, not available. We settled for "pretzel bites" as listed on the menu. We received pretzel wrapped mini dogs. After inquiring, were told that the dogs were indeed the "pretzel bites". Again, I felt fooled. Our server was nice but overwhelmed with her tables. Additionally, they started to move tables outside at 9:00 to open up the dance floor. Not a complaint, just an observation. I'm giving this place 4 stars as a solid 3.5 and I think they deserve better than their reviews indicate. More on that later. We came here for the first time to meet my brother-in-law who was visiting from out of town and staying at the Marriott nearby. We had no problems getting a table and the host was very cool about letting us pick where we sat, because the place is HUGE and not terribly busy on Tuesday nights. He even moved tables out of the way so we could park our kid's high chair in a comfortable spot. Although the sign lists it as a brewery, I didn't see any house brews on tap. However, the selection of beers was quite good, and they had two Heavy Seas taps running, which is a plus. The food was quite good. I had a burger, my wife got the risotto, and my brother in law had the Cuban sandwich. Everyone liked their meals and pretty much licked plates clean. Our service was not bad--there was only one server working the floor as far as I could tell, and she was a little stressed, but we didn't wait long for our food or miss anything we ordered. When she set my burger in front of me, she immediately said, "they forgot your bacon! I'll be right back!" and soon enough, she came back with bacon for the burger. Sure, the place is kind of bland in terms of character, and the food is not OMGAMAZEBALLS, but it's all above-average and together, the disparate elements make a comfortable place to eat, drink, and be merry. If you read the 2-star reviews, most everyone says that their experience wasn't all that bad. In fact, most of them say good things about the food or the service (generally not both, touche!). So, I spent a lot of time here. I'm going to explain this fully. First I have to start by I looked at Yelp Big time before I got started. From that I needed to ask some questions. So I asked Steve the bartender, if I only was going to judge this place by one meal, what should I order? Steve went on to say the chicken sandwich can't recall the exact name of that chicken sandwich but he said it was grilled and then fried and he said anything that comes off the grill is good. So I continued to read my Yelp reviews and no one said anything about that chicken sandwich so that wasn't what I was going with. I usually give every place a chance on the crab cake but so many people killed it. Then I decided I wasn't even going to take a chance spending 16 dollars for a crab cake that had already been determined not to be good. Somebody got on the mahi mahi wrap so I passed on that. Basically Yelp help with killing everything. So I decided to take a walk down the street. After about an hour I made it back to the party and decided that I would sit with some friends and grab something that no one can get wrong. Old bay wings. No way you can mess old bay wings up right?... Well I'm not even sure that they're using ole bay. And if they are it's a really salty version of it which was a little disturbing even though the chicken was cooked very well it had great seasoning. I'm just not sure it was ole bay. Blue cheese dressing is sorta Ranchi flavored but it was good. And the chicken quesadilla was actually really good. Guacamole was decent salsa was average lettuce was fresh. So I have absolutely no complaints on the chicken quesadilla. Another table mate got the potato wedges with the steak wrap. Her first bite she looked at me and said, this is dry. Rub some ketchup on it rubbed some of that blue cheese ranch dressing on it. And then completed it so with a little sauce it became much better. But the wedge fries were actually pretty good. Or not bad let me say. The ambiance is great the place looks wonderful but the food I'm going to just give it an average rating at best. If you just come here for a drink you will not be disappointed there was not one drink that I saw served, I take that back I did see someone get two Coronas that they turned back he felt that they were stale, but that might have just been his taste buds on that night. so my drinks were good the Long Island was good my table mates had and the Malibu thing he was good. But that's all what other people had actually it's a really nice place to meet someone up there this is my dance floor was nice and large plenty of good sound, plenty of good bartenders working very hard attentive and quick. And the outside patio was very nice. And plenty of folks out there smoking cigars. All in all it wasn't a bad outing. Or bad experience. All food was decent. read more

I know that firestation has gone under a few management changes, and as someone who has been going there since they opened I can honestly say they are in the best spot they have ever been in. The food has improved significantly (buffalo chicken Caesar wrap is unreal; wings are great) and the staff is way more friendly and attentive. I recommend going back if you are a previous nay-sayer so you can see the changes for yourself. I understand what the concept was supposed to be, but this place is just eh. The food is good, but not remarkable, although I really enjoyed their beer steamed shrimp. Those are really good, large and worth coming back for. The service is very average, and I understand people are expecting more. The service I had at the bar was average, but certainly not bad. At the table, the last time I went, the server was pretty attentive. It has a very spacious outdoor seating area, which is sorely needed in the neighboorhood as most spots have small cramped patios or maybe a couple of tables on the sidewalk. It's not bad, but it's not really a destination place either. Bartenders are friendly, and conversation with patrons can be lively as it does seem to attract a local crowd. I just think most people expect a more unique experience here. Again, not a bad place. I could easily give it one more star, but I won't. read more

1st visit 3 weeks ago: We went there around 10:30 pm on a Friday night and our table was the only table in our waitresses section, which we assumed was a good thing. She told us that if it wasn't for us being there she would be able to go home and that she was upset - not the greatest first impression at all. We ordered drinks, which came 10-15 minutes later. Ordering food took several minutes, asking for a water refill meant getting a water refill 10+ minutes later, and the food we had wasn't great - an overall very bad experience. Despite this we decided we would try it again one more time. 2nd visit tonight: Service was much better (average, overall) and we were welcomed with "Burgers are half off tonight!" by 3 people. After opening the menu we realized they only have ONE burger on the menu. At $4.50 (normally $9) I thought I'd give it a shot. I'd say at $4.50 it was a decent deal, but no way that thing was worth $9. This experience was definitely better than the first although I don't think I'll be going back ever again. read more

So I have been meaning to go to this restaurant since they opened in August but never got the chance to until last week Friday December 10th. There was a 10-15 minute wait to be seated so we decided to get a drink while waiting. I am so glad we walked over to the bar since we got to meet some AWESOME staff including the GM Jay. We got lucky and found two seat so we stayed at the bar. We ordered drinks (happy hour $5 martinis) which included the martinis made from top shelf Grey Goose/ Belvedere,something that most places wont do. The drinks were made by Tana one of the bartenders there who was very nice and the drinks were nice and strong. Jay also made me a drink and that was also very strong and good. And later on Daniel (another bartender who is very cute) made me his specialty drink called "Captain Daniels Punch" .... needless to say it was very good. We ordered the mild wings and they were SOOOOOOO GOOD!!!. The girl that I was with has a boyfriend that is a cook and he makes pretty damn good wings and even she was pretty impressed with their wings. I LOVED THEIR WINGS! and the fact that they were only $.50/ each. We also ordered the fried Mahi-Mahi wrap and the Bistro chicken sandwich and they were both good. If you do go up there make sure you get the wings! I know I will definitely be back up there very soon. read more

The rack of ribs were dry with chunks of spices on top that tasted gritty. It came with veggies from the freezer. The wings weren't bad, but should be 50 cent wings. Onion rings were unremarkable. We were a little skeptical on trying this place since it had a bunch of bad reviews, but I really wanted to form an opinion for myself and I'm glad that I did. The hostess did seem a little befuddled at our request to sit outside (even though it was a nice day and others were sitting out there as well) but we wanted to enjoy the nice weather. The service wasn't the quickest, but it wasn't snails pace either. The happy hour specials are decent too. We tried the wings as an appetizer and they were pretty decent for $0.50 a piece (there is a minimum order of 6 though). The rest of the meal though was enjoyable. We both had the Cuban sandwich, which was decent. The chipotle mayo gave it some extra flavoring. The ranch fries were also good too; they are steak fries with a fried ranch flavoring (nothing too overpowering though). The servers did seem to get the tables confused since we saw food being taken to the wrong tables, but they eventually found their way - luckily this didn't happen to our food though. read more

First if you want to have brewery in the name you need to have a beer that is made in house. An IPA was their house beer and it is boring and done better else where. Give us something to show off the brewery. Prices are good for what you get in portions but spend less on writting the menu and more on making it good please. I love the concept of this place. I mean who wouldn't like to be on the inside of a fire station hanging out! It's your childhood fantasy come to life, which earns this place 3 stars off the bat. However, what gives it that extra nudge is the service. The customer service here is top notch. I have never had an unfriendly server here and the managers are always walking around, stopping at tables, and asking if everything is okay. Unfortunately, I can't give Fire Station a 5 star rating because the food is rather hit or miss. Sometimes I come and everything is excellent and at other times not so much. I frequent 1/2 priced burgers night on Monday because it's a cheap eat for my son and I and it gives us our "mommy and me" time. I will come one day and feel like, "Whoa this burger is awesome!" I will come another and feel like, "This burger was so so!" I don't know how one messes up a burger but sometimes it happens. Maybe they do not get all their meat from the same source, maybe it's the seasoning, I have no idea. I just know the burgers do not always taste the same, which for me is not cool. read more

Went in for dinner (not to drink) and had very low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised - the glorified bar food that makes up their menu was perfectly servicable from what I could tell. Sliders were the best thing we had despite coming out lukewarm. The patties were juicy and had a great unexpected spicy kick to them. The buffalo wings were decent as well. Ribeye was okay and was prepared correctly. The $12 Lobster BLT was okay as well - lots of lobster meat (it seemed to be from a can) with great tasting bacon, but they should rethink the multigrain toast toast that it came on. The accompanying fries were the generic seasoned frozen kind but not offensive. The color wheel alternating lights reflecting off of the panels above the bar was very annoying if you sat in the middle of the room. I wish we had scored a booth along the perimeter with their individual pendant lights. It's kind of odd that the fire station space is large, and yet it doesn't have many tables on the main level thus seating capacity isn't too high, but it's really loud even on a Monday night. Quick pitstop here for lunch, at this Sports bar/ converted fire station. The space is large, obviously firehouse 'themed' if you will; and gives way to booths, tables, a long bar, space for private parties upstairs, w/dining curbside. I really just popped in here so I could sit down and get a quick bite without hassle; wasn't expecting much but I passed it enough times to give it a try. It wasn't overly crowded at all, lunch crowd mainly from neighboring businesses. The server, whose name escapes me, was friendly, checked often and proactively balanced serving all the tables for lunch, during World Cup- by himself. I ordered wings -split order of jerk and spicy --I opted for the level 3-but got the 5; Unbeknownst to me, until the end. It was no big deal, as I like kick; however someone might not though. Frankly, had the waiter not mentioned, I wouldn't have known- heat palate being a personal thing; nonetheless, he readily offered to make the correction, so I took the correction to go. It was an honest mistake and he was attentive so no harm no foul. My friend ordered the veggie quesadilla which was too wet and not very appetizing. Anyway, The space has potential, and with some professional tweaking, (revamp: mgt, staff training, menu changes, general tweaks, and the right chef) it could be great. Was here last night for an event, and they did EVERYTHING right. Why I feel like I discovered a hidden gem in Silver Spring: ~The food--I was able to sample a few things--the bbq chicken wings were my favorite. They were messy, sweet, tangy, with juicy, high-quality white meat. all the things a good wing should be. I was pleasantly surprised by the hummus--usually at places that mostly serve 'american' food end up butchering the hummus. Not at Fire Station 1....i'm still thinking about their hummus! ~the beer selection-They had an wide selection of good beers on tap--there would be something here to please both the craft-beer loving snob and the novice beer drinker! ~the staff-It truly felt like all the staff were happy to be there, and enjoying themselves while providing excellent customer service. As I left, I was in a better mood just because of that! ~the ambiance-This is where Fire Station 1 really gets it right. The atmosphere here is comforting and familiar, but somehow also really nice, clean, and unique as well! I'll definitely be back--I want to come for trivia night and sample more of the entrees :-) read more

Stopped in here for lunch one day on a whim and it was pretty good. The food we got was fine, it was really hard to decide what to order - there's a huge menu selection. We ended up sticking to appetizers since we had a long day ahead of us and didn't want to be too full, that being said, the portions were more than enough. We both ended up boxing our leftovers for later! My experience here was fine. Nothing amazing, but I would definitely go back for a full meal and a few drinks (I have my eye on a few for next time). What a disappointment! From the start, when I nearly walked through the glass in the foyer instead of the door, as it looked like the way into the room, to the very slow service on a night when there were only a few people in the place, then not having the first beer that I ordered, and finally a pizza that looked and tasted like it just came out of the frozen food case at the supermarket. Others in my group had a burger, which looked OK, but the fried looked terrible, as did a side order of onion rings, which looked greasy, although I was told they tasted ok. Decor is plain, and they could have done a little more to play on the fire house theme besides putti a few small photos on the wall. I should have gone to the Quarry House as originally planned! We also went on opening night and we anticipated big crowds, so when they ran out of beer and we had to wait a fairly long time for our food, we weren't freaked out. Our waitress was a sweetheart, so that helped. Beer on tap wasn't available, and our bottled beers were edging toward warm--probably because the door to the fridge had been open more than closed that evening. They were also out of the bottled beers we ordered, so we got random substitutes. However, the server gave us the second round free, which was very much appreciated. The food needs some work. I had the Caesar and spinach salad (without the spinach, as they'd run out of it) with chicken. It was thickly coated in a very bland, watery dressing. If the dressing is bland, don't add more! Let me do the work with salt and pepper at the table. I was starving, so I finished it, but I hope it improves. My boyfriend asked for his burger medium, but received one that was very well-done (which I personally think serves him right for not ordering medium-rare). The decor was a disappointing. I was hoping for something a little funkier, a little less kids pizza warehouse meet sports bar. The exposed beams helped, and it looked like they were still adding elements. Our table on the second level was right near a door which led to a very brightly lit staircase to the kitchen. In the dark bar it was distracting to have it swing open every few moments for a server. So, I went on Yelp to look for a restaurant near me, since I am from out of town. I saw this place an read the lackluster reviews. Despite that, I am a world traveler and take most reviews with a grain of salt. I can make my own opinion thanks! So, my wife and two kids made the trek here to see what was up. We were seated immediately up stairs, and were met by a pleasant server who was quite attentive. There was a large party next to us, but didn't seem to cause an issue with our ordering or ambiance. Our food came out as ordered in a reasonable time and was actually really good (though my prepubescent daughter didn't like hers, I chalk it up to hormones). Overall nice place with good ambiance, nice wait staff. Nothing negative to report! My wife is actually making me bring her back on our next visit! read more

This was my first time visiting this establishment and within the first few minutes I was not impressed. The hostess was unprofessional. At first glance, I thought she was on her way out the door, but I was wrong. She guided my family of 2 adults and 3 kids to a dirty table, with her outside coat on. After we pointed out that the table was dirty, she picked up the trash and walked away to finish conversing with her Male coworker. She did not give us any kids menus. The hostess did not introduce our waiter(ess); she left us standing around a dirty table, while she looked on from the other end of the restaurant. After we addressed the matter to see if it would be resolved, before we left, her Male coworker that she was conversing with stepped right up. Shortly thereafter, a young man, Christian, came and introduced himself; apologized for her behavior; and saved the night. Christian was attentive, speedy, and friendly. Christian even provided the right menus for his customers and really turned the night around. The seating area near the bar did have a great selection on sports playing, while eating. The food was mediocre and was not worth the bill in the end, but overall it was a good family night. Thank you Christian for the great recovery! I hope this post helps someone. read more

Yo, service is really slow, order a beer about halfway before your first one is done.. The place has potential but needs a few weeks... some music outside wouldn't hurt either. The fire station across the street actually adds to the atmosphere. read more

I've been here multiple times. I have two complaints that resulted in me refusing to go here ever again. 1) The food is so lavishly bad that one wonders if the owners or managers have ever deigned to taste it. Gnaw on rubbery nachos with canned toppings and semi-melted American cheese! Dry out your mouth with an over-cooked, non-seasoned chicken breast with NO toppings...all on a stale piece of bread! It is so consistent in its violent nastiness that you should flat-out run away. 2) There are four televisions downstairs. There are four televisions upstairs. I walked into Fire Station and was greeted by four whole patrons. I politely asked if the barkeep could change one of the TVs. I was rudely told to go upstairs as this was a "Redskins ONLY" floor. Again, four TVs, one game. I did as I was ordered and asked the pimply mouth-breathing bartender upstairs if he could change one of the TVs so I could watch my game. I was told that all four TVs were spoken for...and two carried the Redskins game. In summation, eight TVs, six on the Redskins, all in a bar with four whole customers. So...go to McGinty's. Multiple TVs, all the games, great food, and great service. read more
