We chose this winery not because we had heard of it, or for its reputation but because I tend to just make a selection on a whim and go with it. I was not disappointed. When you drive off of the road onto the dusty gravel drive and follow this to the tin building at the end, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a poky little place with little to offer. Think again. From the moment you step inside it is crystal clear that a great deal of thought has been put into it. It is simple, but very warm and friendly. It is very rustic, but welcoming and family friendly. This isn't a winery where your ignorance of wine is dismissed or where you are made to feel as though you should know more than you do. We sampled around 9 or 10 wines whilst at Mount Jagged, and the selection was very varied. They produce Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and there was a real cross section available to taste, catering for all of the different palates of my party. In addition, there are tables and chairs inside and out, sign fantastic views. And for those visiting with children, a fantastic children's corner to keep the little ones busy while we sampled their wares. As if this was my good enough, the staff are very welcoming and very engaging, showing a lot of interest in our children, offering them juice and spending a lot of time with us to explain the wines each in detail. The cellar door is literally a tin shed which displays its own special charm on entry, not contributed least of all to by the view. The green rolling hills covered in vines with a well appointed dam just to the left work their immediate winery magic on me. The sparklings are of particular note and if you enjoy a medium bodied red you will likely find something here to appeal to your palette. I love trying reds such as those from the cool climate vineyards of Mount Jagged which are so different in character to the highly commercialised and popular Barossa and McLaren Vale offerings typical in South Australia. Their whites were not for me with some pleasant food wines, including grape varieties such as sem, sauv and chardonnay which for the most part displayed distinctive mineral characteristics. The liberal use of french oak may also be of interest to certain connoiseurs. Me - I just like to pick a glass and enjoy the scenery!

The food was presented well and looked absolutely tantilising to the tastebuds when it arrived in front of my eyes and hungry stomach. Not to much surprise, it tasted just as good as it looked and I was able to pick the lamb shank bone clean. The staff were friendly and the whole experience was flawless. The views around the winery are worth looking at after lunch. Hopefully, you can get out of the door at the back of the dinning room and have a look over the beautiful wineyard.

Seems the Langhorne Creek Wine region is a secret to most South Australians, yet a 20 minute drive from Strathalbyn and your there. Being one of several wineries in the region it's a day out without the crowds of McLaren Vale or the Barossa. Lake Breeze is a family affair run and operated by the Follett Family where the greeting is heartfelt and the smiles are genuine. Here you can taste the range of wines they produce in the Cellar Door or sit down in a gorgeous setting, overlooking the vines, and enjoy a light meal. Weddings and functions are also catered for. The menu consist of: Trio of Dips $12.00. Cheese Platter $24.00. Lake Breeze Platter, (local meats and cheeses) $30.00. Soup of The Day with warm, crusty roll $12.00. Pumpkin, Ricotta & Walnut Cannelloni $15.00. Beef Pie & Salad $16.00. Chicken Pie & Salad $16.00. Lemon Curd Cupcake & Coffee $8.00. Now I must vouch for the cupcakes as I am a fan. The food is (mostly) sourced from the local area which in turn helps the small businesses who operate in the district. More recently accolades flowed in the Langhorne Creek Region Wine Show winning Lake Breeze in last 5 years: Champion Wine 4 times and amassing 17 trophies from the Show. For example: Champion Wine of the Show - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Cabernet Sauvignon - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Shiraz - 2010 Winemaker's Selection Best Sparkling, White or Rosé - 2012 Chardonnay Best Museum or Fortified Wine - 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon & Producer of the Year. Now to be honest I am not a big wine drinker, it's my liver not I who chose that decision however I believe a trip to Langhorne Creek to sample a wine that suits your palette is well worth it. The wines are good. Nothing here is (currently) spectacular and worth the trip in its own right but there's a nice young Sav Blanc that's fresh and very drinkable. The Rose and bubbles both surprise and the reds are pretty tidy too: a pinot with a little something to it and a Cab and Shiraz that you wouldn't kick out of bed for farting. They are all approachable and the heavier reds could probably lay down for a few years before coming out to play. The prices are good too $16 - $20 for all wines is a palatable deal. If you buy a case you get two bottles free....so that's just what I did. Now, the other thing to mention are the two cottages to stay at on the property which are great. Very quiet, clean and spacious, ample kitchen space with everything you could need to make a meal or just to prepare a snack. An outdoor patio and big bbq to enjoy. There are two bedrooms and a lovely big bathroom with soaker tub (love the jets!). So, come down, buy some wines and stay the night, it's a lovely getaway.
