Supplizio came at the recommendation of one of our good family friends as a highlight of the food…read morescene in Roma. Since we had a relatively loose itinerary when it came to food (actually for everything), we thought it would be a good idea to grab lunch here after checking out the Vatican City. That being said, we made our way over after a morning of museum explorations. As suggested by the name, Supplizio specializes in suppli - a Roman street food consisting of fried balls of risotto paired with some combination of sauce and cheese. They're very similar to arancini, which are fried balls of rice that originated in Sicily. Walking in we were greeted by a small seating area with the ordering counter in the back. Since it was relatively quiet we decided to sit and eat - the decor was kind of eclectic with a mix of couches and chairs paired with dark woods. The star of the menu was suppli in a variety of flavors - five to be exact. We wanted to go all in, so we ordered one of each: classico (meat, tomato, mozz, parm), cacio e pepe, amatricana, pomodoro & mozz, and carbonara. The mozzarella in carrozza was speaking to us as well so we ordered that too. Even though we ordered at the counter, the food was served to us which I thought was a nice touch. The suppli were great - though they were fried, they were not too heavy and the variety of flavors were prominent without being overpowering; it was really good stuff. The mozzarella in carrozza exceeded by expectations - in the US this is usually a greasy dish prepared with white bread and served with marinara sauce. However, here at Supplizio it wasn't greasy at all - and prepared with Italian bread which was thicker and better able to withstand being deep-fried. The mozz was also delicious and honestly we didn't even need marinara - straight in. Service was good, the employees were friendly and we were served promptly. Overall, Supplizio was definitely a highlight of our Roma food explorations and I would recommend stopping here if you're in the area.
