I went for the Friday the 13th $13+$7 tip special and it was awesome. (I wound up tipping an extra $5 I was so happy with everyone.) Got there around 5:30 and waited for almost two and a half hours, but security, the woman at the front desk, and Angelo, who did my tat, made it so worth it. Everyone was so kind, you'd have no idea they'd been at this for hours. Shop was incredibly clean, very professional, and my tattoo is so dope. Reviewing tattoo parlors has always been a bit of a conundrum for me because it seems to be very much of an "all or nothing" type of situation. Well, I'm happy to report that Fineline was far more of the "all" than the "nothing." My artist, whose name I feel terrible for forgetting (I know he's from Austin, TX though!), did a great job both designing and doing my tattoo. I came into the shop with only a rough idea of what I wanted, and he was very patient with me as he drew several iterations of the design I wanted. Once the tattoo got underway, he did a good job of making the time pass by conversing through the 2.5-3 hour duration of my tattoo. My armband tattoo came out to $450 + tip, which isn't bad for a NY parlor. I was very satisfied with my tattoo by the end, as was my friend who I went with. I am beyond satisfied with this tattoo parlor. A friend and I had been searching for a good place to get tattoos in the city for quite a while that wouldn't cost us an exorbitant amount of money. I saw some people recommending Fineline and decided to check it out. Particularly, I found Danny's work online and loved it, especially since I tend to like detailed black line tattoos. I called the day of and was able to get an appointment for later in the day. My friend also wanted to get one and another artist, Matt was also available almost immediately for walk-ins. Upon arriving, both artists greeted us warmly and Matt started working on designing my friend's tattoo. He got a black armband with floral designs, which he ended up loving. Matt was super nice and allowed me to sit and chat with him while he worked on my friend's piece. I brought in an ouroboros design for Danny to work on and he did an incredible job. The shading he did was absolutely beautiful and I'm in love with the piece he did for me. He also allowed my friend to watch while he worked on my piece. Overall, I would say this place is well worth it and I would definitely recommend it to others. I personally would come back for another piece! read more

In an area saturated with tattoo shops and studios, Fineline stands out above the rest. I don't have many tattoos, but I strolled in here for a consultation for my first bigger piece; which happened to be a cover up. Several shops in the area told me to beat it, or quoted me huge prices, trying to dazzle me with the the complexity of their art and in some case the science of tattooing and how what I wanted was impossible. I was discouraged until I met Angelo and Dale at Fineline. These guys are up for anything, but do so with integrity, style, and a sense of humor. Dale drew up a sick Celtic armband that would cover a small text piece that I had been regretting for a while. Applying the stencil for these types of tattoos is tricky and he showed no hesitation about consulting some of the senior artist to help him apply it correctly and even get ideas on some design elements. Once it was on, his application was flawless and his "bed side manner" was comforting as I sat for my first larger tattoo. I could tell he was invested, and took his time. The price was more than fair considering the amount of time he spent with me. The walls of the shop are adorned with traditional tattoos. These guys seem to specialize in bold and colorful designs from the past, with fascinating modern takes. The shop is clean and comfortable, but has the feel of a classic tattoo parlor, rather than a pretentious modern "studio". I think your money will go further here than other places that I checked out, and at no cost to quality and craftsmanship. Check these guys out. read more

For Father's day, my dad and I got tattoos together (highly recommended as a bonding activity). These were both our 1st tattoos and I was quite nervous but Mehai worked with both of us to get the right design for both of our tattoos. I wanted a bracelet tattooed on my arm that I had been wearing for several years. I thought it would be relatively simple but it wasn't quite and Mehai helped me to figure out exactly how it would look best. I ended up with the lettering tattooed around my wrist instead of the lettering plus black bracelet and I love it. It's absolutely perfect. My dad got a symbol of the Consumptive Poets League which is a combination of the TB symbol and a fountain pen. My stepmom and some friends started the Consumptive Poets League and had a poetry magazine called Koff in the late 1970s. The tattoo is a tribute to that and it looks fantastic. read more

I went to this shop after a recommendation from a good friend. I wanted to get my first tattoo, a small semicolon cat, on my wrist. The shop was clean and the artists were nice (for the most part), however the tattoo I received was garbage. Within a few months it was so faded, you could only make out part of the outline, and there was only a hint of shading. It looked like a smudge of charcoal on my skin. Mind you, it was supposed to be a solid black tattoo. I had also put money down on a second tattoo that I'd wanted as a memorial to my mother, however after the disaster of a first tattoo I received from here, I opted to forgo the appointment and sacrifice the money I'd put down, and went elsewhere. Thankfully I found another shop that both fixed my botched tattoo, and did my memorial tattoo. And they both came out beautifully. Oh, and one of the artists flat out refused to do the tattoo that my husband wanted, despite there being nobody else in the shop, no appointments booked, and plenty of hours left before closing. The guy just didn't feel like doing it. I will not be back. And I have no idea what my friend was thinking when she recommended them. Come to find out that her tattoo aged awfully as well, and is all blown out now. As for me, I would not recommend this shop. Not even for the small stuff. read more

I came here to get my first tattoo a couple months back. Something that I had been thinking about getting for years. I got a signature and the first two letters blew out. I am thankful the signature is in a place thats easily concealable. I am very disappointed that it came out like this. My best friend and her friend went there as well and both of theirs got blown out as well. I am not sure if it is because of the ink that they use. I went in to double check if this was normal and the other tattoo artists told me that "my skin will absorb the ink." In which other tattoo artists told me they had never heard of that before. I got a feminist symbol on my neck for $106 and he got a Panic! At The Disco logo for $210. Daniel tattooed me and he was one of the nicest artist I've ever had (and I have three other tattoos). He was so friendly and made me feel at ease. Danny tattooed my boyfriend and he was so detail oriented and calm. It really helped put us both at ease. I went back here for another script tattoo today. I guess when I have to have a tattoo, I have to have it NOW. It's nice to have a walk in shop for small pieces when so many of the big ones in New York reserve months out. Mehai worked with me this time -- I had the design mostly drawn out and he didn't mind that I had done it myself. I used to dabble in calligraphy so I'm really particular about getting the thick and thin lines just right, as if they were done with a calligraphy pen, and I was happy with his attention to detail. One note: If you plan on getting both wrists tattooed, wear long sleeves, or prepare for strangers on the streets of NYC asking you if you are "OK" since the gauze they wrap you up with makes you look like an escapee from a suicide attempt. :) read more

I got my first tattoo here this summer and I wish I'd gone somewhere else, especially for my first. Mike did it and, yeah, he was friendly enough, but he really messed it up. My design was simple and very minimalistic. It consisted of only seven straight lines, each about one inch long, if that. The very first line he tattooed was just a straight up and down one inch line. Simple. But the bottom of the line has a little finer line split off bent towards the right -- looks like the split end of a string or something. Also, I thought the lines in general could've been a little cleaner. The aesthetic point of my tattoo was to be simple and clean cut. Now, eh, well, I've convinced myself to be happy about it 'cause obviously I'm stuck with it, but still pretty pissed Mike messed up that line. I mean, you've been tattooing for 40-something years or whatever you said -- how do you mess up a straight line?! I noticed the mistake after I'd left the shop after I had my friend take a picture of my tattoo from a straight on angle (it was on my back/nape of my neck). I came back a few hours later to show Mike the mistake and he seemed a little uneasy about it, and suggested I come back in a week if it was still there. He said it might just be something on the surface that'll disappear when it heals. I knew it wasn't just going to "disappear" and it didn't. And I wasn't about to waste my time coming back in to show him and have him possible attempt to fix it. I definitely wouldn't trust him to fix it. The place is clean and the guys there are friendly and stuff, but I woudln't feel comfortable recommending this place (or Mike, at least) to anyone. This was my first tattoo and I'm a perfectionist -- I can't look at my tattoo anymore without seeing that frayed end. It sucks. Even if I weren't a perfectionist -- c'mon, Mike, a straight line's shouldn't be so hard for a "professional" such as yourself, right? read more

If I could give ZERO stars-- I would. When one asks for a WHITE tattoo--- you'd expect it to be WHITE right? WELL, these clowns think it's OKAY to let pen ink sink into a "WHITE" tattoo. They also don't know how to abbreviate words... Such a "established".... Which, to my understanding, is abbreviated as est. Not est .... Notice the difference? Yes. A period to show abbreviation. This is where I got my first and only tattoo. For months, I would go in with drawings, talk to the artists and they'd good naturedly laugh at me. In other words they were incredibly patient to someone who gets "white coat syndrome," i.e. I get very nervous around needles. When I finally got it done, it looked gorgeous. I have a phoenix on my hip. The detail work is amazing; you can see the feathering of each feather (?), they took their time, made sure I was happy and even got me oj afterwards. This was my fifth tattoo and my husband's first (he's the reviewer below me!) I got another small tattoo done at FineLine about three years back. Not only did I have a great experience, but it's held up extremely well. This time around, we checked out one other place before coming to FineLine and I was completely shocked at the price I got quoted. Thought I would head over to FineLine again and was very pleased by the cost and the experience. Mehai is super professional, nice and honest. Both of our tattoos came out perfectly. Mehai even advised me on a more traditional color scheme for mine, and I was glad I went with that instead of something "trendy." This place is definitely old school...don't expect one of the lounge-y salon-type places from the reality shows. But it's clean and comfortable, and I'll definitely be back! I started a large back tattoo here with Mehai. He was very patient, professional and helpful with my newest piece. I have 2 friends that had gotten large Japanese pieces done by him and I found one I fell in love with and he was the guy I felt was best to do it. I don't like giving low stars - I prefer to find what makes an establishment good rather than just bitching about it. Unfortunately Fine Line really only deserves two stars. The pricing was fine, the location was convenient, and the tattoo artist was friendly...but wasn't GOOD. I went in to get an exact duplicate of a tattoo right below that one - I had a paw print and I wanted to add another right below it. Despite having a reference RIGHT there, the tattoo came out terrible - you can see where the gun stuttered in the lines, and the shading is amateur quality. I went here with a friend of mine for her first tattoo. She had been pretty nervous about getting her tattoo in general, & she hadn't had good experiences when we started going around trying to get it. Fine Line changed all that. The shop is small, but clean and orderly. The artists each had their own space to work, so no one was stacked on top of anyone else. A friendly old dude was basking in the sun on a bench outside, more ink than wrinkles, & he welcomed us warmly. The artist talked to my friend as we looked through some books & together they decided on a modification of another piece he had on display. He was really friendly & calming, which was good as my friend began to feel lightheaded during the tattooing. He was happy to give her a break & wait until she was ready to go again, not the slightest bit impatient or rude. This was a welcome change from other shops & artists nearby.
