Steps up to the Gorge trail

Each turn on every trail results in something more special. What a surprise and I had no clue what I was in for. The North Rim trail isn't easy. The easiest trail seems to be the Gorge trail which is accessible up a series of steps up a trail to the right of the swimming area.

Fillmore Glen is a top favorite state park of mine. I've only been here once so far, but I definitely want to go back again. When I went a couple years ago, a portion of the gorge trail was closed towards the end because they were working on a couple bridges. I can't wait to go back again to be able to hike the whole thing. Such a gorgeous park!

Fillmore State Park is similar to the popular attraction Watkins Glen State Park but less crowded, it has more private gorges & waterfalls you can hike down and swim in, and it's dog friendly!! Big plus. The park is $7 to get in. Hiking trails are about .5 miles to the right as you enter the park, and there's car parking at the top of the hill and the entrance to the trail just to the left of that. We hiked the entire gorge trail to the dam and back, it took us about 3 1/2 hours with some swimming in between. There are plenty of waterfalls and if you climb down you can swim right in the falls. The ground is slate & slippery, I recommend wearing sneakers with good grip. Some people were wearing velcro sandals and kept slipping/falling down. One thing we forgot was bug spray and once we got to the main gorge trail/forest we got eaten alive. Near the entrance of the park there's a nice picnic area, bathrooms, a small swimming spot for kids, and a volley ball net. I really love this place! We got there around 1pm on Saturday and it wasn't packed at all. Only a handful of people on the trails as we hiked through.

I took my son for his first hike, it was a great experience for him and he loved it! We did hike all the way to the end of the northern trail, it was tough but worth it!

gorgeous spot! the we did the gorge and south rim trails, and loved it. it's pretty kid friendly, though does get a bit muddy in some spots. of course if your kids are like mine, that's only a bonus. there are clean restrooms and picnic spots. the best feature is the nature itself though. definitely worth a visit!

This campground is a gem-smaller than Watkins Glen, which means it is much less crowded. They have a great gorge trail with multiple bridges that cross the water. The waterfalls were beautiful, but be careful of your step on the slippery trail. The swimming hole was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I wish that we lived closer so that I could find an excuse to rent one of the pavilions!

Excellent. 1) The Gorge trail is amazing. 2) Make sure you visit the Gorge trail, the Rim trails suck. 3) Loved this park.

Fantastic walk for the whole family, a lot of space for Pic-Nic close to the Natural Swimming pool. Only wear shoes that you do not care getting wet.

Beautiful place. I live in California, and anytime I come out here to visit my best friend and God Daughter, I make sure to stop by.

Great restrooms and showers... the campsites are too close for comfort, but access to nice trails.

Ask the Community - Fillmore Glen State Park

Can I walk on the trail in december?

The park is open year round so you should be able to provided there isn't a danger of ice.

Is there a campground there and a place to Kayak?

I visited in the winter to see the falls frozen over, and the park rangers had done an excellent job keeping the trail well maintained. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the waterfall, and there's very little elevation change along the way. North Rim trail entrance was close during winter due to ice and snow. But you can skip the dangerous part of the trail by parking at the Taughannock Falls overlook point and start hiking from there. Then you will reach the upper falls. Parking is only $10. lot is small so warmer weather probably will fill up pretty quickly.

I thought it was a fairly easy 1 mile hike out to the falls (though my coworker vehemently disagrees that 1 mile and easy belong in the same sentence - sorry Miss Sheila!), and there were some falcons swooping around. There is a fee to park, but were still spots remaining when we arrived. We should have received discounted parking with a Military ID, but the booth was unmanned that day, so we paid anyway. There is a restroom facility at the parking lot, and it wasn't bad. I actually think it was heated, so that was nice. I'd be interested in seeing the falls and hiking the upper trail when the weather is better!
